Chapter 150 - 150 149. We havent started yet_1
Chapter 150: 149. We haven’t started yet!_1 Chapter 150: 149. We haven’t started yet!_1 Li Zijian received the call in complete confusion. He was talking to Lu Ban about an earthquake, yet Lu Ban asked him to blow up a building?
What was the connection between the two?
Moreover, Lu Ban was supposed to be in the hospital right now. Wouldn’t blowing it up result in his death?
“Stop asking questions. Just blow it up and be done with it,”
Lu Ban didn’t give him time to remain confused, and bluntly shouted over the phone.
Li Zijian immediately got in touch with the demolition team leader, who was somewhat panicky due to the earthquake.
“Is this the demolition crew?”
“Yes, that’s us. Boss, the earthquake wasn’t our doing. We haven’t even started yet!”
The team leader was quick to disassociate himself from the event. The hospital had started shaking before they’d even begun their work.
“Start the demolition now, blow it up, blow up as much as you can,”
Li Zijian seemed to be influenced by Lu Ban as he yelled into the phone.
“But with the current situation, if we blow it up, the nearby mall might be affected… Hello?”
The team leader wasn’t sure what to make of the conversation he overheard on Li Zijian’s end of the phone.
Fortunately, Li Zijian quickly responded.
“You don’t need to worry. We just bought that block next to it, so go ahead and blow it up with confidence,”
“Got it, understood!”
Reassured by Li Zijian’s words, the team leader let out a relieving smile as he spoke.
After so many years in the demolition business, he had always been extremely cautious, afraid that an accidental blast might damage neighboring buildings and cost him dearly.
Now, he was being told to blow it up without restraint.
It was an incredible feeling!
He immediately called his team together, checked the control circuits, and then pressed the initiator switch.
The electrical signals flowed through the wires into the hospital, where the melted concrete couldn’t halt the crystallization of human scientific achievement. The high-explosive detonator was triggered, and soon after, a power beyond the mundane ignited.
Some say that the symbol of human civilization is the mastery of fire, and without a doubt, explosives are a step further in that civilization. Born from natural fire, they are much stronger than fire itself; they are the ultimate in violence.
Boom—
A deep booming burst forth from the wobbly hospital building, as another, more stirring, more ruinously effective force was coming to life beyond the earthquake.
Boom—
The main load-bearing walls and support columns were the first to be destroyed, the steel and concrete structures instantly breaking under the impact of the tremendous force. As these supports failed, the building began to decompose under the force of gravity, collapsing and disintegrating. This was destruction according to natural law, the ruin of human ingenuity.
As dust rose, one could see the entire building slowly falling.
The structure that had taken so many people so long to build was walking into its end in an instant.
The melted cement, numerous open eyes, and bloody maws were all devastated, tormented, torn apart by the power of the explosion.
A painful wailing mixed with the roar of the explosion, unheard by anyone.
The adjacent mall was also affected, stones flying and shattering the glass doors and windows of the now-unoccupied shops, wreaking havoc and leaving them in shambles.
But perhaps after some time, where the demolished stood might rise a new landmark, echoing the prosperity of old.
Just as nature destroys and rebirths, tonight, one existence was wiped out, yet another was taking shape.
The demolition team leader thought he heard a cry, the sound that most represented hope in the human world.
He saw, among the collapsed building, something conspicuous falling amidst the rubble and debris.
“An elevator?”
The team leader stared dumbfounded. He couldn’t believe the elevator, which should have been on the first floor, had somehow reached the top floor and was now falling with the collapsing hospital.
Clang—
Clang—
Clang—
The metal box hit the ground, rolled several times, and finally came to a halt.
No one dared to approach it.
“Has the earthquake stopped too?”
The team leader sensed that the earlier trembling of the earth had also ceased, as if his demolition had somehow counteracted the quake.
He heard the sound of distant sirens and fire trucks, and his face turned pale as a ghost.
“When you testify later, remember to say that it was Secretary Li who ordered me to do the bombing!”
He immediately told his subordinates.
Half an hour later, when the dust from the explosion had settled, people dared to enter the ruins of the hospital.
Bricks and tiles were scattered everywhere, some in strange shapes that resembled a human figure, while others were twisted to the extreme, like post-modernist sculptures.
In the pitch-dark night, everything appeared ferocious and terrifying.
The construction site’s bright lights illuminated the entire hospital, leaving nowhere to hide.
Soon, everyone’s attention was drawn to the elevator.
Not just because it was the only thing that still retained its complete shape after the blast.
Bang—
Also because it had been making strange noises from inside since just a moment ago.
It was as if someone was knocking on the walls from within.
The firefighters approached cautiously, three of them surrounding the elevator, as if fearing that some monster might emerge from it.
Bang—
Another knocking sound, this time louder.
The firefighters couldn’t help but shiver.
At that moment, there came a metallic friction sound from the elevator car.
Creak—
The closed doors of the car were slowly pulled open.
One could see it was a human hand.
Someone was opening the elevator door, climbing out of the toppled elevator car.
It was Lu Ban.
“Are you okay?”
Li Zijian, who was overseeing the site, had thought Lu Ban was prepared to sacrifice his life, but unexpectedly, he had hidden in the elevator car and escaped unscathed.
“Actually, it’s pretty serious, maybe just broke three or four bones, internal organs ruptured seven or eight times, I guess.”
Lu Ban appeared somewhat weak but did not have any obvious external injuries.
“What time is it now?”
His phone had been smashed a moment ago and had turned off.
“A little past four in the morning.”
Li Zijian wasn’t sure whether to offer Lu Ban some water or to call an ambulance.
“So it is…”
Lu Ban uttered a phrase that puzzled Li Zijian, who, after thinking for a moment, still asked.
“Do you want to lie down in the ambulance?”
“That won’t be necessary, just let me breathe some fresh air, and I’ll be fine once the sun comes out.”
Lu Ban sat next to the car, like a stone statue.
Indeed, paired with his tattered clothes and his sturdy physique, he resembled a sculpture in the classical style.
“?”
Li Zijian was baffled.
But Lu Ban did not continue talking.
If he did, he might not be able to swallow the grass in his mouth.
His body was now nearly filled with various green plants occupying his internal organs, trying to heal his injuries. These wounds were not only from the elevator collapse but also from the corrosion and pollution from the cement he had encountered earlier.
However, without the sun, the grass inside Lu Ban could only patch up the fatal damages, keeping him from dying from a chain reaction.
He looked around at the ruins, the broken walls like the wastelands of the Abandoned Capital, System’s indifferent and icy words emerged from the dust.
