Chapter 142 - 142 141. The Vanishing Worker_1
Chapter 142: 141. The Vanishing Worker_1 Chapter 142: 141. The Vanishing Worker_1 Lu Ban subconsciously wanted to raise the crowbar, thinking of dealing a blow to its head, but some kind of intuition stopped him from moving.
It wasn’t just because of the increasingly loud footsteps outside; it was also because the doctor had looked around the consultation room woodenly, even sweeping his gaze over Lu Ban without any reaction.
“Can’t it see me?”
Lu Ban quickly came to a realization.
After the figure drew back its head and continued dragging the saw forward, it soon vanished into the corridor.
“But why did it look in here to begin with? Was it the sound?”
“No, that’s not right; it didn’t notice its own kind just now. There must be some other reason it peered into the consultation room.”
After thinking for a moment, Lu Ban stripped off the white coat from the doctor lying on the ground, reversed the doctor’s mask, put it on his face, and donned the white coat.
This way, Lu Ban looked no different from those doctors.
Both the clothes and mask reeked of mildew, but it was still bearable. He hid the flashlight in his sleeve and, holding the crowbar in his other hand, left the room.
As he stepped out the door, Lu Ban turned back to take one last look at the department sign on the room.
Obstetrics and Gynecology.
At first, he was slightly taken aback, realizing those strange beds were for obstetrics examinations, but soon he fell into another confusion.
The previous nurse’s notes, as well as the hospital’s own records, had made no mention of an obstetrics department in this hospital; even some nurses found it strange that the hospital lacked such a department.
But why did an obstetrics department appear here now?
The name of this mission was [Crying]. Was there any connection to obstetrics?
Why didn’t Nanhua Private Renji Hospital have an obstetrics department?
Lu Ban recollected the location; this room should have been a storage room for the necessary medications on this floor according to the hospital’s design plans; it certainly wasn’t an obstetrics consultation room.
However, staying here was of no use, so Lu Ban decided to continue exploring.
As soon as he stepped out of the consultation room, he saw a nurse sitting at the nurse’s station.
The nurse wasn’t wearing a mask, revealing cracked lips. There were no lips at all—the brownish-yellow teeth were exposed. The nurse’s uniform was filthy. It seemed oblivious to the changes outside, continuing to sit at the desk as if writing something down with a pen.
But Lu Ban saw that there was nothing on the desk.
Or was something that was meant to be there now in his possession?
He felt the red-cover notebook in his chest pocket.
Lu Ban spotted the stairwell; he would have to pass the nurse’s station first.
The nurse dully repeated the writing motion, even using her own fingernails. Where the nails had peeled off, the fingertips kept scraping on the wooden desk, leaving grimy trails of black blood that stained the surface.
As Lu Ban slowly passed by the nurse’s station, he glanced at the blood-written words on the desk.
While Lu Ban tried to decipher the words, the nurse suddenly lifted her head.
Her eyeballs had long since withered away, leaving only clumps of twitching decayed flesh, but for some reason, Lu Ban felt as if he was making eye contact with her.
However, the nurse seemed to be simply looking up. As Lu Ban moved forward, she kept her head still and just stared at the space he had passed.
Lu Ban let out a sigh of relief, then confirmed the message again.
He saw the message read, “Be careful behind you.”
In that instant, Lu Ban felt as if something were indeed behind him.
He slowed his steps and, using his peripheral vision, checked behind him, but found nothing.
Stepping onto the stairs, Lu Ban moved with steady, careful steps, staying alert to his surroundings.
Just as he reached the turn of the staircase, Lu Ban felt something tug at his pant leg.
He looked down and saw only his shoes, nothing out of the ordinary.
Continuing upward, Lu Ban arrived on the second floor.
He saw a nurse pacing in the corridor, pushing an IV stand, but the tubing from the drip was connected to her own arm, drawing blood from the nurse and feeding it into the bag. She seemed completely unaware, still making the clinking sounds, staggering through the hallway.
Lu Ban didn’t disturb her and kept going up.
This time, as he turned the corner, he was more cautious, slowing his pace and closely watching his feet.
As he lifted his leg, Lu Ban clearly saw a pale, baby’s hand reach out from the shadow and tug at his pant leg.
Lu Ban froze in motion.
His eyes had a layer of greyish mist, blurring his vision, but with “True Sight” he saw the hand and knew all too well that it did not belong to this world.
Even though it was pitch black outside the window, and the hospital was filled with unknown humanoid monsters moving around, the owner of this hand was from a Foreign Domain.
His gaze shifted to the shadows, trying to get a clear view of the hand’s owner, despite his instinct telling him it was best not to, but he still looked.
Unfortunately, there was only the shadow, no monsters, and no children.
However, as Lu Ban’s gaze moved away from the shadow, he clearly saw, behind him, in the dusty stairwell, there were a series of marks besides his own footprints.
The marks were as if a baby had unsteadily followed him, crawling up the stairs, leaving behind friction traces.
The marks continued all the way to where he now stood.
Lu Ban looked at the end of the trail, right beside his pant leg where the shadows were thickest.
He lifted his foot and climbed a few more steps, but this time, he kept watching the footprints that weren’t his own, trying to catch the other’s movements.
However, the footprint remained unchanged, as though it had stayed in place.
Lu Ban turned his head and quickly reached the third floor.
When he looked back, he saw the stumbling marks had somehow extended behind him.
Moreover, those marks had spread to his shoes, pants, and lab coat.
Lu Ban saw that on the back of his lab coat, a small handprint had appeared out of nowhere.
Pulling at his garment, Lu Ban didn’t feel any unusual weight.
He frowned slightly, about to continue upstairs, when he heard an ear-piercing scraping noise.
Lu Ban looked towards the source of the sound, seeing a figure slowly walking down the corridor. He wasn’t wearing a doctor’s white coat or nurse attire.
The man was clad in work clothes and holding a shovel, with a faded yellow hard hat on his head.
His face was ragged and rotting but still vaguely recognizable.
Lu Ban immediately recognized him as the previously missing construction foreman, Liu Qingjiang.
“Why is he here, and turned into this?”
Lu Ban saw Liu Qingjiang dragging the shovel, slowly heading to one side of the corridor and stopping at a room’s door before walking in.
After waiting for a while, no sound came forth.
Lu Ban decided to take a look.
