I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 118 - 118 117. Borrowing Path_1
Chapter 118: 117. Borrowing Path_1 Chapter 118: 117. Borrowing Path_1 The road illuminated in front of the car window had no visible end, the buildings on both sides cast a gloomy shadow, emitting dim yellow or orange-red lights, creating a bizarre atmosphere.
There wasn’t a single pedestrian on the street, nor a vehicle, extremely quiet.
Only “Yin Yang Road,” displayed on the navigation, made one feel anxious within.
“Where is this, does Jiangcheng have such a road?”
He Youwu couldn’t help but slow down the car, the surrounding scenery becoming clearer. Occasionally the flickering lights in those buildings seemed to have silhouettes moving, but most were swallowed in darkness.
All the traffic lights were showing yellow, and there appeared to be some water stains on the road, but they did not stop to investigate.
As the two police officers were intently focused on the road ahead, Lu Ban’s cellphone suddenly rang out with a woman’s singing.
“Damn it!”
He Youwu hastily pressed the brake, and before the car came to a complete stop, he looked back.
Lu Ban was using his phone to play a song, seemingly not nervous at all.
“What are you doing, scaring the hell out of me!”
He Youwu cursed.
“I thought the atmosphere was quite right, so I added some background music.”
Lu Ban paused the song on his phone.
“Don’t be so tense, sometimes people scare themselves.”
“Shall we get out and check the situation?”
Chen Danshen glanced at the rearview mirror, which was all foggy, revealing nothing.
“I think, it’s better for us not to get out of the car.”
Lu Ban spoke to stop Chen Danshen, who was about to open the door.
“But how can we get out if we keep driving forward?”
Chen Danshen didn’t understand.
“Have we taken the wrong turn or is there a problem with the navigation? This place doesn’t feel like a street in Jiangcheng.”
“Yeah.”
He Youwu’s hands gripping the steering wheel were covered in sweat. He picked up the navigation phone only to find the signal had been lost; there was no network, yet the navigation seemed to be working normally. However, no matter how much he zoomed in on the map, he could only see one road, with the name “Yin Yang Road.”
All around was complete Silence, even the previously noisy chirping of insects couldn’t be heard. The night wind blowing through the window actually felt chilly.
He Youwu looked at the green belt beside him, those trees with their weird shapes, twisted and crooked, as if they had been pulled by something.
Suddenly, he felt as if something had floated past behind him.
Turning around, He Youwu saw Chen Danshen’s serious face, and behind Chen Danshen, at the base of the twisted tree, it seemed like there was a person standing.
“There’s, there’s someone!”
With goosebumps all over, He Youwu called out quickly, but Chen Danshen turned and saw nothing.
“Are you sure you saw someone?”
Chen Danshen carefully checked outside the window while asking.
“Really, there was someone standing under the tree just now, over there.”
He Youwu pointed at the tree.
“Shh.”
Lu Ban suddenly put his finger to his lips, signaling for silence.
“Pull the car over to the side.”
He instructed.
He Youwu quickly started the car and slowly drove to the roadside.
Tree shadows danced, the night sky was void of moon and stars, pitch-black, with only the lights from buildings illuminating the road.
It was then that Chen Danshen noticed the lights inside those buildings had, at some point, turned a ghostly green.
Gusts of cold wind blew through the windows, bringing an involuntary shiver.
“Close the windows.”
Lu Ban instructed.
He Youwu had just shut all the car windows before he began to feel a bit warmer.
“What in the world is this…”
“Look ahead.”
Lu Ban pointed toward the front right.
He Youwu looked over.
Before seeing anything, he first heard a series of soft, muted voices.
Or rather, the sound of chanting.
Those languages he couldn’t understand were murmuring something, like prayers before the Buddha or the incoherent whispers at a funeral.
A leaf blew over from the front and stuck to the car windowglass.
He Youwu took a closer look and realized it wasn’t a leaf at all, but paper money!
Rough, dark yellow, with the imprint of copper coins on it—paper money!
In front, more paper money floated over, and suddenly, the skies were full of these paper slips.
Chen Danshen felt his hair standing on end; he stared fixedly ahead and saw a procession slowly coming from the end of the road.
Some of them were scattering paper money, most carried sticks or flags in their hands, moving forward woodenly like puppets. These people all wore broad bamboo hats from which long black cloths hung down, concealing their faces; their bodies were clad in rough cloth robes, as if they belonged to another era altogether.
Behind these people were carriage after carriage. The horses pulling the carriages were emaciated, their eyes covered with black cloth. The carriages themselves looked dilapidated, as if they had just survived a thunderstorm, illuminated only by a faint light flickering from a lamp hung above them.
Only, the lamps glowed green.
That eerily green, matching the silence of the buildings nearby.
“Invisible troops are passing; don’t speak, and it’s best if you close your eyes,”
Lu Ban warned them.
“What the hell…”
He Youwu complained, was this not just some superstitious nonsense? Could there really be ghosts in this world?
Yet, fear made him close his eyes and cover his ears.
Chen Danshen glanced at Lu Ban and closed his eyes as well.
The two policemen only felt the air in the car grow colder and colder as if winter had come, chilling them to the bone.
Even with his ears covered, He Youwu, who was sitting closer to the road side, could still hear the crisp sound of horseshoes on the pavement and the friction of the wagon wheels rolling over it.
His heart thumped wildly, his body tensed to the extreme.
Suddenly, He Youwu felt all those sounds disappear.
“Is it over?”
Thinking this, He Youwu sneakily opened his eyes and caught a glimpse outside.
It was then that he saw the horses pulling the carriages standing right outside his window.
Beside the horse, a figure wearing a bamboo hat stood still; he towered over ordinary people, and He Youwu felt that this man must be over two meters tall.
They just stood in the middle of the road, without making a sound.
He Youwu’s heart jumped to his throat; he noticed the decaying muscles of the horse whose eyes were covered with black cloth, the writhing maggots within, and the blackened palms of those standing figures as if they had been dead for a long time.
And on those carriages were packed countless heads, each with an expression of wooden panic and dread!
Just as a scream was about to burst from his throat, a hand reached from behind him and covered He Youwu’s mouth, causing him to jump in surprise and swallow his scream back down.
The decayed horse seemed to have heard something, slightly lowering its head to scan the vicinity with hollow eyes glowing faintly green. It locked gazes with He Youwu for a moment but seemed not to see the car at all.
After a brief wait, the procession began to move forward again with great fanfare. He Youwu was on edge, his heart pounding furiously, dreading the possibility of the procession stopping again, coming for him.
By the time the procession had completely passed, He Youwu had no idea how much time had gone by.
Lu Ban released his hand from He Youwu’s mouth and carefully wiped his palm with a tissue.
“It should be okay now, just look straight ahead. We’ll be able to leave after a while.”
He pointed down the road ahead.
