Chapter 47: Let’s Do It Again

Hailey took a quick sip of her coffee, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she waited for my answer. I lifted my latte too, taking a gulp to steady myself. The warm liquid slid down my throat, but,

’Ugh, why’s it so bitter?’ I winced inwardly.

The sharp taste twisted my face into a frown. I set the cup down on the bench, the paper crinkling slightly against the wood.

"Uh... I mean, I like doing it a lot," I said, diving back in.

"Pfft, Gah, cough! Ugh, sorry," Hailey coughed, nearly choking on her coffee. "Didn’t expect that to hit me so fast, cough!"

She sputtered, a tiny splash of coffee escaping her lips and dotting the bench. Her hand flew to her mouth, but she laughed through it, her shoulders shaking. The sudden mess lightened the mood instantly, the tension melting into something softer, warmer.

She wiped her mouth with her sleeve, still smiling, and waved it off like it was no big deal. I grinned too, spinning my story as I remembered the women I’d seen in her videos, wild, bold, unapologetic.

"It’s kinda awkward to say," I continued, lowering my voice. "If we sleep together, I need it at least three times, you know? Office couples don’t hook up that often, I bet."

"Yeah, true... three times..." she echoed, her voice trailing off.

Her eyebrows lifted slightly, like she was picturing it. She tapped her fingers on her cup, the soft thunk-thunk blending with the rustle of leaves overhead. Her scarf slipped a little, revealing the curve of her neck, pale against the dark fabric.

"Yep," I nodded. "I’ve gone up to five times before. Well, anyway, point is, one day my girlfriend started sleeping with me less and less."

"Why? Why? Why?" Hailey pressed, leaning closer.

Her eyes were wide, almost confused, like she couldn’t wrap her head around it. Just as I’d guessed, she looked innocent, but underneath, she had a huge appetite for this stuff. The wind tousled her hair again, and she didn’t bother fixing it this time.

"Uh... is it okay to say this?" I hesitated, testing the waters.

"Hey, Alex," she shot back playfully. "I’ve already told you everything, haven’t I?"

She smirked, her lips curling just enough to tease me. The bench groaned faintly as she scooted closer, her knee brushing mine for a split second. The air felt charged now, buzzing with something unspoken.

"...Am I the only one you’ve spilled this to?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, I’ll tell you later too," she winked. "Come on, hurry up!"

Her eagerness egged me on, and my silly little lie started morphing into something solid, something real-sounding. I leaned back, resting my arm on the bench, the wood cool against my skin.

She had a girlfriend for five years, I spun in my head. But lately, she’s been dodging me in bed. It feels good when we do it, sure, but afterward, I’m so wiped out I can’t function the next day. It turned into a problem, then a fight, and boom, breakup.

"So you’re totally done?" Hailey asked, her voice softer now.

"Yeah," I sighed, nodding once.

"Hm?" she hummed, tilting her head like she didn’t get it.

Her brows furrowed, and she chewed her lip for a second, lost in thought. The sunlight shifted, casting long shadows across the path, and a faint chill crept into the air as the day wore on.

"Wanna grab a drink later?" I tossed out, keeping it casual.

"Huh?" she blinked, caught off guard.

"Tonight," I clarified. "Talking about this stuff’s got me in the mood for a beer."

"Oh... uh, sure!" she perked up. "Oh, crap! I need to head in and check something!"

She glanced at her phone, her face twisting with sudden panic. The screen glowed faintly, lighting up her features as she scrolled quickly.

"Oh, right," I said, snapping back to reality.

I checked the time, almost noon. I’d left the office just before eleven, so we’d burned through nearly an hour out here. The park felt emptier now, the distant chatter of people fading as lunchtime loomed.

"I’ll ping you on messenger!" Hailey called, already hopping up. "Let’s head up first!"

She waved over her shoulder and darted toward the building, her scarf flapping behind her. Her footsteps echoed faintly on the pavement, quick and light. Nice, step one’s in the bag, I thought, a grin tugging at my lips.

"Huh?"

I’d just started following her, stepping toward the glass doors of the building, when a flash of light flickered in my vision. Before I could react, everything blurred, and I was yanked back to the home screen. The park vanished, the bench, the trees, Hailey, all gone in an instant.

’What the hell?’

Confusion hit me like a brick. I fumbled with the interface, my fingers hovering over the screen as I pulled up the quest list. My heart thudded, half-expecting something to be broken.

"Oh," I breathed, staring at the display.

The quest list was usually packed with options, dozens of little tasks blinking for attention. But now? Just one sat there, glowing faintly. ’They lock out other quests when you’re on a B-rank or higher,’ I remembered. That must’ve been why it kicked me out like that.

Without hesitating, I tapped the Hailey quest again.

Aha.

The light burst in my vision, and suddenly I realized I wasn’t outside the building anymore. At the same time, it clicked, quests ranked B or higher worked differently.

According to the game system, it felt like reaching a turning point auto-ended the quest and shoved you into the next phase. The shift was instant, like flipping a page. One second I was in the park, the next, here.

I was in a bar now.

Not just any bar, a quiet, cozy room bar, perfect for private chats. The air smelled faintly of wood polish and alcohol, with a low hum of muffled voices from beyond the walls. I blinked, quickly scanning my surroundings to get my bearings.
