Chapter 41: Company Manager

"Let’s go." I took a deep breath, double-checked my stats one last time, and navigated back to the quest page.

No matter how much I prepared, nothing could replace real experience. The best way to learn was by doing.

With a steady hand, I reviewed my selected item—Hailey’s boyfriend’s phone—and pressed the Start button.

A familiar yet unsettling sensation washed over me. It was the feeling of being pulled into another space, as if my entire body was dissolving and reassembling elsewhere.

By now, I had gone through this transition effect multiple times, but it never stopped making my heart race.

And then—when I opened my eyes, I was somewhere completely different.

"Where...?" As my vision gradually cleared, the first thing I saw was a computer monitor in front of me.

Words and numbers filled the screen, neatly arranged in rows and columns. The document’s title caught my attention.

[Quarter 1 Expense Report]

At the same time, my ears picked up the sounds around me—keyboard typing, footsteps against polished floors, low murmurs of conversation, and the occasional ring of a phone. The atmosphere was structured and professional.

Slowly, I lifted my head and looked around.

It was an open-concept office. The room was spacious, with desks neatly arranged in rows.

Employees sat at their workstations, typing away or engaged in discussions with colleagues. The bright overhead lights illuminated the entire space, giving it a modern yet somewhat sterile feel.

It didn’t take long to realize where I was. A company. And judging by my position, the desk, the monitor, and the way people carried themselves around me... I was an employee here.

"So, I’m a colleague..." I muttered under my breath, still processing the situation.

But before I could think further—

"Chief." A voice called out from nearby.

’Chief?’ I thought confusingly.

"Chief?"

"...Huh? Me?"

"...Manager?"

I blinked in confusion as I turned my head. A young woman stood beside my desk, watching me with a slightly puzzled expression.

Only then did my thoughts start catching up. Since I was Hailey’s colleague in this quest, that meant I worked at XYXX Company. And judging by her words... I wasn’t just any employee.

"My title is ’Manager,’ just like Hailey." The woman’s concerned gaze didn’t waver. "Are you alright?"

I quickly composed myself. "Oh, yeah. I just had a bit of a headache."

"Uh... Should I come back later?"

"Oh, yeah... Sure, do that."

"...Alright. I’ll check in later." She hesitated for a moment, as if still unsure whether to leave me alone. But eventually, she nodded and walked away.

As soon as she left, I let out a quiet sigh. Now I understood why B-Rank quests were in a different league.

In previous quests, I only had to interact with a single target. It was straightforward—I could focus entirely on my mission.

But this? This was an entirely different challenge. Now, I had an entire workplace to deal with.

"This is exhausting." Before I could even regain my composure—

"Alex, are you okay?"

"Huh?" The new voice made me freeze. But it wasn’t the voice itself that startled me. It was the name they used. Up until now, no one in a quest had ever called me by name.

A strange feeling settled in my chest. I wasn’t just here as myself. I was someone else.

I had brushed it off before—thinking of these quests as a form of possession. I was just controlling a role, stepping into someone else’s place.

But this time... this time was different.

Someone actually knew me. Not just as a colleague—but by name.

"...Alex?" The voice spoke again, filled with concern.

"A-Alex? Why are you acting so weird? It’s kind of scary."

I blinked, still struggling to process it all. That’s when my gaze dropped to the desk.

And I saw it. A nameplate. [Manager Alex] That was my name here. Alex. It seemed tgat this person and my name are exactly the same. Now, that was new.

And my title was Manager.

"What the hell is this?"

Just when I thought I was getting used to these quests, something like this happened.

Unlike my previous missions, I wasn’t just dropped into a setting as an outsider. I was stepping into an existing person’s life.

’I need to act normal.’ I forced a casual laugh, hoping to brush off the strange moment.

"Haha... I think I’m just a little sleepy."

The woman in front of me frowned. "...Huh?"

With my incredible improvisation skills, I pretended as if nothing was wrong and turned my attention to the person speaking to me.

And then—

I recognized her. She wasn’t just any colleague. She was the target of this quest. Hailey.

Even though I had expected to meet her, seeing her up close was something else entirely. She was stunning. So much so that it felt almost unfair for someone like her to be working in an ordinary company.

Long brown hair cascaded down her shoulders, smooth and silky, perfectly complementing her fair skin. Her delicate features were refined, with bright eyes and a soft pink hue on her lips. There was a natural elegance to her, but at the same time, a faint coolness in her expression.

She was beautiful. I unconsciously muttered, "Hai... Hailey?"

Hailey’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Hmm. You’re acting really strange today."

Before I could react, she stepped closer and placed a hand on my forehead. Then, as if comparing, she touched her own forehead right after.

"I don’t think you have a fever. Do you need some medicine?"

"Oh, no, no. I’m fine. I just... didn’t get much sleep."

"...Alright. But let me know if you need anything. I have the perfect headache medicine!"

With a bright smile, she turned and walked back to her desk. I exhaled slowly. After two consecutive moments of panic, I finally had a brief moment of peace.

I quickly summarized the situation in my head.

First, this wasn’t a normal quest. Unlike before, I had an entire office to interact with—not just Hailey.

Second, to these people, I wasn’t a stranger. I was truly Alex, the Manager of this company.

Third, my approach had to be different. If I walked up to Hailey right now and said, "Leave your boyfriend and be with me," I would fail instantly. That much was obvious.
