Chapter 40: Gacha Roll

"Damn it. Let’s do this first. Either way, the higher the stats, the higher the chances." I had made my choice. I selected the second quest.

Seducing a Co-Worker.

〈B-Rank Quest〉

〈Objective: Steal Hailey’s heart.

〈Reward: 9,000 points / Bonus: +9 to stats

〈Details: Hailey, 29 years old, department manager at XYXYX Company. Due to her exceptional skills, she was promoted to a managerial position at a relatively young age.

She has been in a committed relationship for seven years. However, compared to Hailey—who is attractive, talented, and competent—her boyfriend is nothing more than a struggling high school graduate preparing for college entrance exams.

As her coworker, you can’t help but feel frustrated watching someone like Hailey cling to such an incapable boyfriend.〉

〈Can you win her heart?〉

〈Available Items:

-Hailey’s Taste Notebook

-Aphrodisiac

-Hailey’s Boyfriend’s Phone (6,000 points)〉

"A gacha worth 6000 points? Is this for real?"

Since I hadn’t clicked on this quest after unlocking the gacha system, I didn’t know the cost of drawing an item for this mission. But now that I saw it, I was shocked. The gacha price was a staggering 6,000 points.

Considering that clearing the quest would reward me with 9,000 points, it wasn’t a bad deal. But still, spending that much in one go felt overwhelming. It was like you got your monthly salary and you spend it all or maybe just half of it on something random.

"Taste Notebook, aphrodisiac, Hailey’s boyfriend’s phone?"

Now that this was a B-Rank quest, I took extra time to read through the details and carefully examine the available items. The list was surprisingly specific.

I understood what the Taste Notebook and aphrodisiac could be used for. But the boyfriend’s phone... That one was a mystery.

"What am I even supposed to do with that...?" I was hesitant. I currently had 6,300 points—barely enough for one draw. I had only one chance. I needed to choose wisely.

Out of the three items, the boyfriend’s phone seemed the least useful.

Even if I had access to it, what could I really do? At best, I could spy on their conversations or get a better understanding of their relationship. But would that be enough?

The aphrodisiac was tricky, too. Let’s say I used it and spent the night with her. We still didn’t know Hailey’s personality well enough. If things went south, it could completely backfire.

What if she just dismissed it as a mistake and cut all ties with me? Then, the whole plan would fall apart.

The best option seemed to be the Taste Notebook.

Judging by its name, it likely contained detailed information about Hailey’s preferences. And in this kind of game, it was highly probable that it included her romantic and sexual preferences as well.

"The best-case scenario would be getting both the aphrodisiac and the notebook." A seduction purely based on physical attraction? It might work. But securing information on her deepest desires would be a stronger strategy.

Unfortunately, the system only allowed carrying one item per quest.

"No turning back now. A gamble is a gamble." With that in mind, I made my choice. I would pull from the gacha.

Clearing ten B-Rank quests was no small feat. This was a big investment. The 6,000-point price was painful, but if it meant completing the mission, it was worth it.

"At worst, I’ll still get 3,000 points back. It’s a risk, but a calculated one." Of course, that meant I’d be effectively spending 3,000 points after factoring in the reward.

I placed my hopes on the Taste Notebook and pressed the gacha button.

A notification popped up almost immediately.

〈Ding! 〉

〈You have obtained the item: ’Hailey’s Boyfriend’s Phone.’〉

"Ah...!" I clenched my fists. The result of my six-thousand-points gamble was a phone. Not the Taste Notebook. Not the aphrodisiac. But her boyfriend’s phone.

Damn it. I sighed, trying to calm myself down. There was no undoing it.

Even though the gacha system was unpredictable, each item was still useful in its own way. If the system assigned this phone to the quest, then it must have some purpose.

"Yeah... That’s right." I forced myself to think positively. There had to be a reason for this. With that settled, I went ahead and officially selected the item. Now, I was ready to begin.

I pressed the Start button. As soon as I did, a familiar notification popped up.

〈You are about to begin the quest using the item: ’Hailey’s Boyfriend’s Phone.’ Proceed?〉

"Here we go." I pressed the button again and was about to close my eyes when—

〈Ding!〉

Another notification appeared.

〈Warning: While completing a B-Rank or higher quest, you cannot engage in any other quests. B-Rank quests have a low chance of being completed in a single attempt. Do you still wish to proceed?〉

"Oh?" This was new. I had gone through multiple quests by now, but this was the first time I had ever seen a warning like this. A warning message. That was what it looked like.

I wasn’t sure why the system was giving me this kind of alert, and honestly, it made me a little uneasy. But what caught my attention even more was the statement:

"While completing a B-Rank or higher quest, you cannot engage in any other quests."

On top of that, it also mentioned that the quest wouldn’t be finished in just one attempt. Did that mean I would have to stop midway and restart later?

"Now that I think about it... things have been too easy so far." As soon as I read that line, I had a realization.

In this game, B-Rank quests were where the real shit began. The difficulty had suddenly spiked.

For now, I clicked "Do Not Start" and returned to the home screen.

A part of me considered increasing my stats before challenging a B-Rank quest. But my curiosity about how things would unfold, about why it couldn’t be completed in one go, overpowered my caution.

And curiosity won.

"Let’s go."
