I Can Use Filthy Game Currency In The Real World -
Chapter 36: Jake Call!
Chapter 36: Jake Call!
There were stats to consider, a gacha system that played a crucial role, quest rankings, and more.
"First, I need to keep grinding until I reach A-grade."
The game didn’t seem to have a defined final goal, which might have been disappointing for some. But to me, it made perfect sense.
After all, reality didn’t hand you a purpose either. If you wanted something, you had to set your own goals and work toward them.
And right now, my goal was clear: Achieve an A-grade ranking. Of course, that didn’t mean I’d turn it into a chore.
"I’ll enjoy the process as much as I can until then."
With everything I had learned about the gacha system, I finally felt like I was past the tutorial stage. Now, the real game is beginning.
I had just finished organizing my thoughts when my phone buzzed with an incoming call. I glanced at the screen, Jake.
I picked it up.
"...Are you sick?" Was the first thing I heared from the other side of the phone, voice was filled with worry or more like... hmm whatever.
I frowned. "What are you talking about?"
"I don’t know, man. You sound weird. Your voice is kind of off, and your eyes looked a little out of it earlier."
"Shut up." I rolled my eyes. He always had a way of making things sound dramatic.
"Hey, are you seriously not coming?"
"Yeah. I’m heading home."
Jake let out an annoyed sigh. He could be more stubborn than he looked. But honestly, if one of my friends randomly backed out of our plans at the last minute, I’d probably be just as frustrated.
"I have something to do. It’s a family thing."
There was a brief pause on the other end.
"Oh... uh. Well, if it’s family, I guess I can’t argue. Damn, though. Even Mike is coming today."
That caught my attention. "Mike’s coming to the public lecture?"
"Yeah. Crazy, right? We finally got him to join."
Me, Jake, and Mike had a habit of hanging out at the PC cafe’s after classes. My role in our group was simple, I was the one who always taught them how to play whatever game we were into at the time.
"Tell them to wait. I’ll be there in five minutes."
Jake hesitated. "You sure? I thought you had some family thing."
"It’s fine. I’ll just stop by for a bit."
Jake let out a snort. "Man, you change your mind so fast."
Before I could say anything, another voice chimed in from the background.
"He’s not coming. Every Monday, he has to go see that damn little sister of his."
I recognized the voice immediately, Mike.
"Oh, right." Jake seemed to remember now.
Among the three of us, Mike was the only one with a girlfriend. An older woman with a job. I had asked him before how they even met, but he always dodged the question, saying he’d tell me later.
He still hadn’t.
"Then... let’s go!"
Jake’s voice was full of excitement as he started walking ahead.
But just as I took a step forward, Mike called out, "Hey! Let’s eat before we leave!"
I hesitated for a moment.
I have to meet a woman too... Hmm.
Instead of answering, I just waved my hand dismissively and picked up my pace, hurrying ahead without looking back.
I felt a little guilty for ditching Jake like that, but there was no time to waste. If I sat down for dinner with them, I’d be stuck there for at least an hour. Knowing Jake, he’d find a way to drag things out even longer.
I couldn’t afford that right now.
The weekend passed in the blink of an eye.
After finally getting a solid grasp on the newly unlocked item gacha system, I decided to focus on clearing quests without touching the gacha itself. It was tempting to rely on items, but I needed to see how far I could go without them.
I played non-stop, trying to find a higher-level repeatable quest besides Linda’s F-grade one, but no matter how much I searched, nothing came up.
"Repeatability is the real problem here."
I let out a small sigh.
Linda’s quest had its downsides, it was only F-grade, and the rewards were limited, but as far as structure went, it was the ideal quest. The more I played, the more I realized just how valuable it was.
The whole thing was strange, though. Nexus World was, at its core, an incredibly unrealistic game. And yet, at the same time, it was one of the most realistic games I had ever played.
For starters, it was a VR game, but the way it connected to reality was beyond explainable and understandable.
Trying to make sense of it wouldn’t get me anywhere.
Instead of dwelling on the how or why, I decided to just accept it as real and move forward. But when it came to exploration, things were completely different. That part felt painfully realistic.
Even though stats played a role, reality didn’t just let things go smoothly. Even the easiest quest could take an unexpected turn and end in failure.
Like what happened yesterday.
It was just an E-rank quest. Should’ve been simple.
But in a moment of carelessness, I accidentally called the woman I was with "Linda."
She immediately got pissed, stormed out, and left me sitting there like an idiot.
Quest failed. Just like that.
That one mistake cost me the whole quest failed.
It was a harsh reminder, I had to stay tense whenever I started a new quest. There was no way to predict what would happen next.
But at least repeatable quests were different.
With Linda’s quest, things were predictable. Familiar. The moment it started, I’d always be in her room. More often than not, she’d be waiting for me, ready to learn or be trained.
If I was tired or just didn’t feel like thinking, I could take the easy route.
I’d simply tell her, "Ride me and shake until I come."
She’d follow the order without question. I’d snap a few pictures along the way.
Quest complete.
Simple. Efficient.
I exhaled sharply, rubbing my temples.
"Ha..."
It really was ridiculous when I thought about it.
But as long as it worked, I wasn’t complaining.
