Chapter 339: Chapter 339: Comrade, I’m Not a Bad Person
When Meng Li returned, the people at the station were cheering so much that it left her dazed and confused. She thought that perhaps they’d gone mad from overworking and lack of rest, which can indeed mess with one’s mind—look at their beaming, utterly joyous faces.
"Meng Li is back; the boss said to look for him when you get back."
"Oh!"
Seeing her listless response, Chen Du clicked his tongue twice.
"Cheer up, our good days are yet to come!"
Meng Li: "......"
Have they got epilepsy? Who was it complaining to me this morning!!!
After Lu Zhenping finished his meal, he packed up the cleaned lunch box and put it in his pocket, and was just about to have a smoke when Meng Li knocked on the door of his office.
"Reporting!"
"Come in."
Meng Li pushed the door open with a slight frown on her face; she just felt an unusually gentle vibe emanating from the boss.
Ha, must be seeing things!!!
"How is it? Any findings?"
"Well, kind of. I followed her and saw her go to Deng Zhuang’s house—oh, you don’t know him. He was transferred here from Mianyang County; he’s kind of slack and slow to react, hard to train. He was with Captain Yan before, and you know how Captain Yan is—serious and responsible, and he really didn’t think much of Deng Zhuang. Later, Deng became a local police officer under the West District Police Department."
Lu Zhenping listened to Meng Li’s words, reflected quietly for a moment, and then gestured for her to continue.
Meng Li: "......"
What should I say, report the whole truth, or be a little vague? After all, I, a female comrade, spent a great deal of time eavesdropping around corners. Won’t people think there’s something wrong with me?
"What’s wrong, cat got your tongue?"
"No, reporting, that is, from the conversation between Zheng Ya and Deng Zhuang, it’s apparent she has backing. It proves your earlier deduction was correct; Zheng Ya indeed has someone guiding her. She kept bothering you, not really saying anything, but has managed to stir up lots of gossip and scandals, probably to smear your reputation."
Lu Zhenping nodded, then waited before looking at Meng Li again.
"You’ve been out for over an hour, almost two, and that’s all you’ve got to report? Anything else?"
"Boss, your words are a bit harsh. Although I was out for a long time, I haven’t had a proper sleep in three days. And you have no idea, those two damned people are so disgusting. What I’ve told you is already the filtered version. They were all over each other as soon as the door closed, and they started right at the yard gate... As a pure and innocent girl, I endured half an hour just to overhear some useful information. Do you think it’s easy for me? You could at least praise me. Instead, all I get is criticism. It’s truly disheartening."
Lu Zhenping: "......"
When did she become so sensitive? What I said is no different from before!
"Alright, alright. Your team will finish work as usual tonight. Also, check your desk; your sister-in-law brought gifts for everyone. Yours is already there."
"Really? Thank you, boss. You are truly wise and valiant. Such great vision to marry such a beautiful, elegant, and graceful woman as my sister-in-law. A lucky man, you are."
"Scram, scram, scram..."
"Alright, I’m scramming now, immediately!"
After Meng Li left, she thoughtfully closed the door to Lu Zhenping’s office and skedaddled towards her own desk. As expected, she spotted several bags and, upon closer inspection, she discovered a heavy hair ornament adorned with pearls and embroidery, ten small hair ties with pretty little beads strung on them, along with two other bags, one filled with pastries and the other brimming with a big pack of spicy strips.
Even without opening them, just looking at the goodies was enough to make one’s mouth water.
"Don’t just stand there, open them up and eat! Sister-in-law said she’s treating us to hot pot tomorrow night."
"Really?"
"Is there any doubt? Everyone was exhausted earlier; now look at them, they’ve all perked up like they’ve had a shot of adrenaline. If they had wings, they’d be flying by now."
Meng Li pursed her lips and gave her colleague a thumbs up.
Putting that aside, not having to burn the midnight oil tonight and getting to finish work early, plus hot pot tomorrow – good days have come so suddenly, so nice.
All thanks to Sister-in-law. Without her, the bunch at the Police Station would probably still be guzzling strong tea to stay sharp right now!
Shen Meng, the one being thanked, was currently inquiring at the entrances of several hot pot restaurants while riding her bicycle.
After finally finding one with a good reputation, excellent service, and the ability to make reservations in advance, she felt reassured and headed home.
As she was nearing home, she decided to get off her bike and push it along. Suddenly, she heard a frantic shout.
"Get out of the way, quickly get out of the way! My bike’s brakes are broken, move aside..."
Shen Meng frowned. As he came barreling towards her, she simply twisted the handlebar, nudging the front wheel of his bike to one side. The man staggered and fell to the ground, taking a while to get back up.
"Comrade, my, my arm seems to be broken. Could you help me up?"
Shen Meng: "..."
If you’re gonna stage an accident, at least make it believable. It’s so pathetic I can barely watch, I’d do a better job acting it out myself!
"Comrade, let alone the fact that men and women shouldn’t touch – you almost ran into me just now, how could you have the nerve to ask me to help you?"
The man’s face stiffened, then he looked back at Shen Meng with an expression of pain, speaking with difficulty.
"Comrade, I’m not a bad person, I’m an actor with the Provincial Theater Company, my name is Jiang Wei. I admit my fault earlier, but you did use your bike to push against mine, didn’t you? If you hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have fallen, right?"
"How can you make such a ludicrous claim? You were riding a bicycle, not a car. Brakes failing on a bicycle and you couldn’t just jump off or at least stand on your feet to stop? Instead, you were shouting to clear the way while pedaling harder. You say you’re an actor, but it doesn’t look like it. Seems like you got the role through connections... Oh, I get it. No wonder you can’t control a bicycle as a grown man – must be short of height, tsk tsk tsk, won’t be surprised when you’re kicked out. Comrade, you should really polish your acting skills."
After finishing her piece, Shen Meng didn’t bother with Jiang Wei, who was grimacing in pain on the ground, and humming a tune, she twisted around and walked towards her own yard.
Jiang Wei: "..."
Who was the idiot saying this lady likes good comrades? He’s the face of the theater company and she didn’t give him a second look, even sneered at him with disdain as if she’d seen something filthy.
What’s worse is she insulted his height. He’s one meter eighty with shoes on, why the discrimination, why the discrimination indeed!!!
