I Am Extraordinary Alone -
Chapter 56 - 55: Twins
Chapter 56: Chapter 55: Twins
"There’s a survivor!"
Wei Tianyang walked briskly to the wriggling shadow, pulled open the iron door, and found that it was a bathroom behind the door.
The shadow was small, lying sideways on the ground, looking like a child of about four or five years old, and behind this child, there was the shadow of an adult, curling him in their arms, no longer moving.
Wei Tianyang reached for the moon, and in a trance, he crossed through two membranes of reality, returning to the highlands.
He hurried down the ramp towards the sedan hidden in the woods, ignoring the dissuasion of Kacha and Starbucks.
The driver, leaning against the car door reading a novel, saw Wei Tianyang approaching him quickly, followed by Kacha and Starbucks.
"Take me to the factory below," Wei Tianyang said.
The driver’s face twitched, "The place has already been turned into a sea of fire, hasn’t it?"
"There’s a child, might still be alive," Wei Tianyang said.
"Possibly?" asked the driver.
"It depends on whether you drive fast enough," Wei Tianyang said.
...
The blue sedan rushed into the foggy forest path, the wheels rolling over fallen branches and leaves with a crisp crunch.
The closer they got to the factory, the stronger the pungent smell of sulfur and the nauseating odor of charred flesh became, so they rolled up the windows to prevent the thick smoke from pouring into the car.
The surrounding woods were still burning, but the open flames were not big; it was just that the temperature around was extremely terrifying.
When the car approached the factory area, it was blocked by a large crater caused by the thermobaric bombs; no matter how hard the driver tried, he could not move forward.
And on the other side of the crater, only the ruins of the factory remained after being bombed.
Four thermobaric bombs had turned the crescent-shaped factory area into a fractured riverbed, leaving only two factory buildings spared from being reduced to piles of stone. However, they too were burned inside and out to a black cement shell.
Fortunately, the factory had been evacuated, so there was not much flammable material; at least no open flames were visible from the outside.
"I’ll only wait for you for ten minutes, it’s too hot here," the driver said.
Although Kacha and Starbucks verbally tried to prevent it, they had followed him and therefore reluctantly got out of the car with Wei Tianyang.
The three clambered over the large pit and broke into the factory where the refugees were detained.
The smell of roasted flesh surged out from the holes in the walls and the smashed iron doors. As soon as they entered the factory, they discovered a layer of deep red mud on the ground, followed by incomplete limbs not yet completely burned.
The death scenes of those people were truly tragic; large men of two or three hundred pounds were now burned down to a small piece of black, red-flecked flesh, no larger than a basketball.
Wei Tianyang had seen the number of people here in objective reality, but now only a small pile of rotting flesh remained; it was obvious that the vast majority had vaporized instantly during the explosion.
Starbucks couldn’t hold back, clutching his chest as he vomited on the ground, running out of the factory in a sorry state. Kacha could bear it, but his face also looked terrible.
They had never imagined the mission would turn out this way, so they were completely unprepared for equipment like gas masks.
"There’s no chance, they’ve been blown to pieces..." Kacha shook his head.
Wei Tianyang did not respond; he walked quickly towards the factory bathroom he remembered, where a small wooden door was charred black and slightly ajar. Through the crack, there was something dark wriggling.
He yanked the door open, and there, on the doorframe, was a charred corpse of an unrecognizable adult, curled up, protecting the child in their arms.
Presumably, when the explosion occurred, the two happened to be in the bathroom. In that instant, the adult instinctively wrapped their child in their arms, only to be bitten into charcoal by the surging fire dragon.
Despite this, the child was also severely burned, turned into a red, charred mass of flesh. Their hair was burnt into clumps, and their clothes fused to the skin; it was no longer clear if it was a boy or girl.
Wei Tianyang had never seen such a tragic sight, his eyes reddening instantly. He bent down, touched the child, and that small bundle actually opened its mouth and moved.
Still alive!
He took off his jacket and gently lifted the child from the adult’s embrace, wrapped him inside it, and ran out.
At that moment, his leg was entangled by something.
Looking down, it was a little girl about four or five years old.
"My daddy is still inside," the little girl said, holding onto his leg and looking up.
Wei Tianyang’s expression was somber as he looked down at the child in his arms, thinking to himself that her struggle moments ago must have been her last, perhaps she had died in his embrace.
Suddenly, there was a crashing sound coming from the factory door,
Kacha urged from outside, "Ishmael! Let’s go! If we don’t leave now, we’ll be buried in here!"
No sooner had the words fallen than the ceiling above the entrance, along with the door frame, collapsed with a thunderous crash. Huge chunks of rock blocked most of the entrance.
Wei Tianyang’s heart sank, for there was a large group of refugees inside the factory, and among them were those dozen or so guards from Tiantai Pharmaceutical.
Someone patted him on the shoulder from behind, and when he turned around, he saw a short, frail man smiling at him.
"I’m beyond saving," said the man with a smile. "Please take my daughter out of here, I’m begging you..."
The little girl hugged her father, crying, "Daddy! Let’s go together!"
The man shook his head, smiling as he stroked his daughter’s head, "Daddy is already dead. You can still be saved, hurry and follow this man out. From now on, you’ll need to survive on your own... Daddy loves you..."
Wei Tianyang looked down at the girl, her innocent expression breaking his heart. A four or five-year-old child couldn’t yet comprehend what death meant.
Moreover...
The body in Wei Tianyang’s arms moved unexpectedly, and she opened her eyes, looking at Wei Tianyang, and whispered softly, "Daddy..."
He was shocked, and turned to look at the man’s daughter again—she was still there, tearful, clinging to her father.
No, this couldn’t be right... had he made a mistake?
He looked around once more, searching, but there were no more bodies in the factory.
Could this little girl be existing in some state between life and death at this very moment?
The man pushed his daughter away with determination, instructing her to leave with Wei Tianyang.
Unaware of any of this, Kacha was still hurrying them along.
Wei Tianyang said to the man, "Don’t worry."
Then, cradling the girl’s body, he ran out of the factory with Kacha, followed closely by the girl’s shadow.
Starbucks, upon seeing a little girl in Wei Tianyang’s arms, immediately teared up. The three of them remained silent as they got back into the car.
The little girl’s shadow had vanished, and the girl in his arms began to breathe more evenly. However, such severe burns could still lead to her sudden death.
"What do you plan to do? This child..." Kacha asked.
Without looking up, Wei Tianyang said, "We’re going back to find Yaha. Such injuries are nothing to him."
"No... she’s not like us," Starbucks objected.
"She’s lost everything! And now she’s made an enemy of Tiantai Pharmaceutical!" Wei Tianyang argued.
Starbucks sighed, "Yaha won’t agree. She doesn’t have a superpower and she’s only 5 years old. The Black House is not a charity."
Wei Tianyang’s eyes flashed with fierceness.
Kacha quickly suggested, "Our boat is no place for her. Kongse has a refugee camp run by the United Council, and Yin Country has sent a humanitarian medical team there. We’ll take her there!"
Wei Tianyang said no more.
The driver sped up the engine, and when they returned to the city, it was already 6 p.m. Wei Tianyang took off his ammo vest and bulletproof vest, left his gun in the back seat of the car, and ran towards the entrance of the refugee camp with the little girl in his arms.
The peacekeeping soldiers thought he was charging in with a bomb and immediately aimed a dozen guns straight at his head.
"There’s a casualty! A casualty!"
Wei Tianyang shouted loudly, and as he got closer, the soldiers saw that he was holding a severely burned child, and they immediately lowered their weapons. Some ran ahead back into the camp, calling loudly for the medical staff to come out quickly.
Wei Tianyang was soon surrounded by a large group from the peacekeeping forces and the humanitarian medical team. A Yin Country woman with long black hair, wearing a mask and a white lab coat, rushed to the front.
She removed her mask. About thirty years old with sharp, piercing eyes and a dignified, mature demeanor, her eyes—sharp as blades—suddenly welled up with tears when she saw the child in Wei Tianyang’s arms. She quickly took the girl from Wei Tianyang, her voice urgent, "Hurry up and set up the sterile tent! I need to operate! Now!"
The girl’s shadow stood beside the female doctor, waving at Wei Tianyang.
"Thank you, big brother, thank you."
