Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 259: Run
Chapter 259: Run
"There are 100 people on the list but I count 101." The BeastMan said as he scrutinized the tour group.
Murmurs quickly broke out amongst the tourists as they claimed that they had come through legitimate means while calling out others for most likely being the bad egg.
Elena turned pensive at that moment as she had an uncanny feeling that she was the odd one out.
She glanced at Douglas who had a meaningful look on his face, his gaze fixed on the list the BeastMan held.
Seeing as how no one was willing to point out the odd one amongst them, the BeastMan didn’t hesitate to begin calling out names.
As the list was slowly exhausted, Elena’s breathing grew uneven as she worried that she would soon be caught.
Realizing that she would have to make a run for it, she tried to move only to notice the presence of other BeastMen that had already surrounded them, and apart from them, she couldn’t shake off the odd feeling that people were watching her specifically.
Just then, murmurs echoed in her ear, causing her to glance at the BeastMan calling out names from the list.
Suddenly, the paper he was holding turned pixelated before returning to normal.
Then, he called out her name. "Elena."
She grew excited upon realizing that she wasn’t the odd one out only for the murmurings in her ear to grow worse, almost like they were telling her not to go.
Before she could understand what was happening, the BeastMan spoke up.
"So you are the odd one out."
Elena didn’t know why but a deep sense of foreboding crept up her spine, prompting her to glance to the side to find Douglas standing beside her.
Then she realized that his name hadn’t been called out.
However, it seems like he had an inkling that this would be the case as he didn’t try to deny the allegations and instead remained silent, his expression revealing that he was in deep thought.
The BeastMan walked up to him and grabbed him by the shoulder. "It seems like you don’t talk very much."
"..." Douglas still said nothing, merely regarding the BeastMan that towered over him by a few meters.
"Don’t worry, once we are done with you, you’ll be singing like a bird."
Instead of responding to thinly veiled threats, Douglas glanced at Elena and revealed a warm smile. "Stay safe, I’ll be back soon."
Elena didn’t know why but she didn’t want him to leave and was even tempted to follow him but seeing as how the BeastMen were so imposing, she sensibly took a step back.
Douglas was quickly escorted away by the BeastMen with the other tourists discussing amongst themselves about the incident.
It seemed it was a normal occurrence that happened most times with stowaways taking part in the tours in a bid to enter the Inner section to steal valuables.
After successfully drawing their attention away from the minor incident, the tour guide led the tourists into the city with the grand gates opening to reveal an expansive royal palace.

Douglas was remanded in a room with little lighting and two chairs.
Its size was barely enough to contain 10 people and coupled with the stink, it gave him a rare sense of claustrophobia.
It had been roughly fifteen minutes since he was brought here, in which time he’d pondered on the situation he was in.
So far, the coincidence of meeting Elena left him questioning several things but even more than that, he’d noticed something strange occurring all around the city during the tour.
It was almost like the world about them was bending its rules, or rather rewriting them to fit a confusing narrative.
The strangest part was no one seemed to notice it.
Which made him wonder if he was seeing things or if it was his connection to Constellations that helped him see the truth.
Regardless, he was tasked with keeping Elena safe, and staying in this cell would be a hindrance to that endeavor.
Taking a deep breath, he exerted his will on the world and the next moment, disappeared in a flash of black and white.
Seconds later, the BeastMan returned to an empty cell.
As his brows knitted, he mind linked with the others and sounded a warning.
An enemy was on the loose.

The tour quickly came to an end, not because it was short but due to how enjoyable it was, the tourists’ perception of time moved at a rapid rate.
For Elena however, as it inched closer to the end of the tour, the murmurs grew worse.
She could barely walk but didn’t dare to be left behind.
The feeling of being watched stuck with her and scared her out of her wits.
However, the tour ended and the tour guide led the group out of the inner city and back to their starting point where everyone dispersed, quite satisfied with their day.
Elena was left unsure of what to do now but then decided to return to the tavern for the time being.
The Lightbringer had long since closed its doors with the Nighteye opening up to bathe the world in its purple light.
As she walked, Elena staggered, barely able to get her bearings.
By the time she came to, she realized she’d walked into an alley.
"What’s going on?" She couldn’t help but mutter tiredly.
The murmurs she was hearing seemed to be trying to tell her something but she couldn’t make sense of it due to how distorted it was.
At that moment, the space before her turned pixelated for a moment before the vague image of a woman with a similar appearance to her, appeared before her.
Then she heard her speak.
"Run."
Not at all understanding what was happening, Elena snapped out of her dizzied state and immediately took off like a sprinter.
Seconds later, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed behind her.
She turned back just in time to see large brown wolves, with sizes comparable to bears, chasing after her.
