Chapter 50: Zhou Zhaoguo Invites Them to Dinner

Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Zhou Zhaoguo Invites Them to Dinner

"Who’s the crazy one?"

Mr. He did not answer Anning’s question, instead, he looked serious and asked again.

Anning said with an awkward laugh, "Just a classmate, messing around, making a joke."

She dared not mention Mu Yunxi’s name, even if Mu Yunxi really was annoying. But if He Tingchen found out, he would definitely kill him.

She couldn’t bear the thought of getting Mu Yunxi in trouble over such a trifle!

The man looked at her with deep eyes, and it was unclear whether he believed her or not.

But whether he believed it or not, he didn’t continue the interrogation and instructed Chen Rui to drive.

On the way, Anning couldn’t help but ask again, "Why were you in my car in the first place?"

"Your father called, asking us to come over for dinner," the man replied slowly.

"Zhou Zhaoguo?" Anning was surprised.

Then she immediately said, "I won’t go. Why should I have dinner with him? Besides, he’s not my father. You should know my situation. We have no father-daughter affection, he’s certainly not my father."

"Do you hate him?" He Tingchen asked.

Anning snorted coldly, "What do you think? He abandoned my mother and me before I was even born, marrying another woman. All my life, he’s been absent, and the only time I went to him to borrow money when my mother had a car accident, his wife and he insulted me. Do you think I shouldn’t hate him?"

"If you hate him so much, why not take revenge?" the man asked again.

Anning was startled for a moment and said, "What revenge? Didn’t I already take it hard on him last time when I took his inheritance?"

"That’s your idea of revenge? You are too kind-hearted," He Tingchen said, tapping on her forehead.

Anning rubbed her forehead and looked at him, puzzled.

He Tingchen said, "We’re eating together tonight. Don’t you want to see what he’s up to?"

He put it this way, and a sense of curiosity arose in Anning.

Indeed, Zhou Zhaoguo didn’t do anything without a reason. He had no reason to invite them to dinner out of the blue. Surely there was another motive.

"Alright, then I’ll go. But I need to go back and change my clothes," Anning said.

He Tingchen nodded.

Anning started to feel excited.

She remembered the last time she went to the Zhou family looking disheveled, and the moment she entered Zhou Manor, she was ridiculed and scorned by Zhou Muyan and Zhou Musen.

They said she was dressed almost like a beggar, with messy hair and an ugly visage.

Marrying He Tingchen, wouldn’t that scare him to death?

He’d probably kill her on the spot, not even lasting one night!

At that time, she was furious yet unable to retort.

So this time, she had to dress up beautifully and take back her dignity lost then.

When Anning got home, she ran straight upstairs to the dressing room He Tingchen had given her.

It took her just over an hour to come down from upstairs.

She wore an elegant and noble pearl-white cheongsam dress, paired with white stiletto heels adorned with crystal beads shining under the lights.

To place the diamond hairpin, she had even put her hair up specially.

This way, not only could she wear the diamond hairpin on her head, but also showcase her pearl earrings.

She then put on a pearl necklace and wore a pearl bracelet on her wrist. With her luminous lip color and light makeup, she looked radiant and exuded an air of affluence.

Mrs. Chen smiled and said, "The wife looks really beautiful dressed up like this!"

"Looks good, doesn’t it! I think it looks great too," Anning said proudly, twirling her dress in a circle.

He Tingchen pulled a face and shook his head.

He stood up, walked in front of her, and tapping her forehead, he commented, "Nouveau riche."

"Is this not good?" Fang Anning frowned.

She had meticulously selected it, satisfied with her choices.

"Let’s go," He Tingchen did not answer her question but gave permission for her to be dressed that way.

Fang Anning grew excited again, hurriedly following him into the car.

The car quickly arrived at the Zhou Manor.

She didn’t know if it was because she had spent too much time in the He family’s presence, getting used to their understated opulence.

Before, she had thought the Zhou family was splendidly luxurious, but now, it just seemed like a vulgar display of newfound wealth, clearly not the kind befitting a family of long-standing heritage.

Suddenly she thought of He Tingchen calling her a nouveau riche, and she looked down at her clothing and accessories and couldn’t help but laugh.

Indeed, would a real lady of nobility wear all her jewels on her body?

Dressed like this, isn’t this exactly what being labeled as nouveau riche is?

But then again, for the nouveau riche to deal with their own kind is quite appropriate. If she were dressed too simply, probably the folks of the Zhou family wouldn’t pick up on the subtlety and depth of reserved luxury.

Sure enough, as soon as the Zhou family’s servant opened the door and saw her attire, they immediately became exceedingly polite.

It was a complete 180 from when she first came to the Zhou family.

Zhou Zhaoguo came over. Seeing her, his face was full of smiles as he greeted He Tingchen first: "Mr. He, it’s my honor to have you grace my humble abode. Please excuse the simplicity of my home."

He Tingchen didn’t even spare him an extra glance, taking Fang Anning’s hand and walking straight inside.

Zhou Zhaoguo, ignored, wasn’t angry but immediately hastened to follow.

Once He Tingchen sat on the sofa, he didn’t speak anymore.

Though he was handsome, his expression was terrible.

Zhou Zhaoguo watched him awkwardly, unsure how to make small talk and struggling to think of anything to say.

"Anning, why don’t you ask Mr. He what he’d like to drink?"

Zhou Zhaoguo wasn’t daring enough to speak directly to He Tingchen, so he had to turn and ask Fang Anning instead.

Fang Anning felt nauseated at his overly familiar tone.

Holding back her discomfort, she said, "No need, we’ve brought our own tea."

Sure enough, when they entered, four bodyguards followed them in.

Each of the bodyguards carried a large food box. Zhou Zhaoguo thought they were gifts for him and was about to say how polite they were to bring something when they were guests.

Fortunately, he hadn’t spoken yet.

Turns out, it wasn’t a gift for him; they had brought their own tea and snacks.

One of the bodyguards came forward, opened a food box, poured a cup of tea, and placed it in front of He Tingchen and Fang Anning.

The other three bodyguards didn’t move, presumably having the dishes for tonight’s meal in their boxes.

Zhou Zhaoguo was suddenly enveloped in extreme awkwardness!

They obviously didn’t trust him; they wouldn’t even drink his tea.

All his meticulous preparations were in vain.

Upstairs.

Chen Fengjiao was doing Zhou Muyan’s makeup.

After the makeup was done, Chen Fengjiao let Zhou Muyan look in the mirror to see if there was anything she was dissatisfied with.

Zhou Muyan tugged at her spaghetti strap dress, exposing half of her chest, which made her feel very uncomfortable.

"Mom, do I really need to dress like this?" Zhou Muyan asked.

Doesn’t she feel like dressing this way makes her no different from the women selling themselves in nightclubs?

After all, she is the young miss of the Zhou family; this seems too degrading.

If others found out, who knows how they would laugh at her!
