Chapter 47: Testing Her Abilities
Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Testing Her Abilities
"Mom, has my cousin arrived?"
Liao Hanfeng entered pushing the door, loudly asking.
He Min frowned and sternly reprimanded, "Yelling like that, do you have any manners?"
Liao Hanfeng stuck out his tongue and quickly sat next to He Min, playfully whining: "It’s all family here, no outsiders, no one to laugh."
"How can there be no outsiders, isn’t Miss Fang one?" He Min slowly said.
Fang Anning raised her eyebrows, realizing that today’s visit was not just for recognition, but an examination.
If she failed the examination, she wouldn’t be considered family.
"Serve the dishes!" He Min spoke.
The maids gradually left and soon came back in. Carrying trays covered with lids, they placed the trays down before finally lifting the covers.
Steamed crab, boiled shrimp, and a whole lobster looked extremely fresh and tempting.
However... all were with shells.
"How are we supposed to eat these?" Liao Hanfeng complained.
Fang Anning silently gave Liao Hanfeng a thumbs up within her heart; he had spoken her mind.
"These are your cousin’s favorites, have you forgotten?" He Min glanced at him and said indifferently.
Liao Hanfeng, upon receiving his mother’s glance, was initially stunned but soon recovered, gleefully looking towards Fang Anning.
Fang Anning lowered her head and chuckled bitterly; indeed, there’s no such thing as a free feast; this feast was like a banquet set with intentions.
"Miss Fang, since you’re married into the He family, you naturally should take good care of your husband. Tingchen enjoys these; you wouldn’t be unaware, right?" He Min said.
Fang Anning smiled and replied, "I haven’t been with the He family for long, I truly didn’t know he liked these. But now I do, thank you, Aunt, for the reminder, I will remember from now on."
"Now that you know, peel the shrimp and clean the crab meat for Tingchen. They’re very fresh; they need to be eaten while hot."
"Alright, I’ll start peeling right away."
Fang Anning smiled as she wiped her hands with a hot towel, and began peeling shrimp for He Tingchen.
It was just peeling shrimp, something she knew how to do; she quickly peeled several shrimp for He Tingchen, all perfectly intact.
Liao Hanfeng exclaimed, "Fang Anning, you’re so good at peeling shrimp? I want some too."
"You can eat, but let your girlfriend peel for you; I only peel for my husband," Fang Anning smilingly said.
"Stingy," Liao Hanfeng complained.
He Min glared at him, then smilingly said to Fang Anning, "Don’t just peel shrimp, pick crab meat for Tingchen too."
"No problem."
Fang Anning smiled, wiped her hands again with a hot towel, then picked up a set of crab-picking tools, skillfully extracting the meat of a crab intact.
He Min, watching her skilled movements, subtly raised her eyebrows.
Liao Hanfeng smilingly said, "I didn’t know you could even clean crab meat!"
Fang Anning smiled, "When I was young, my family was poor, but we lived near the water, naturally, I have eaten crab too."
However, it was always the leftovers, crab claws. Her mother used to help at a crab restaurant, and she helped as well. Naturally, she learned the craft, only she wasn’t used to eating it often, becoming a bit rusty.
He Min was extremely pleased!
She smiled beamingly, "Miss Fang is indeed a smart and clever girl, I like her very much. This is my meeting gift, just a small token; I hope Miss Fang won’t disdain it."
He Min took out the gift she had prepared and handed it to Fang Anning.
Fang Anning hurriedly received it with both hands respectfully, not knowing what it was. However, from the packaging alone, it seemed very upscale and elegant, definitely not a trivial gift.
She quickly expressed her thanks and put it aside.
This was He Min’s way of acknowledging her.
Indeed, soon a maid came in, bringing the proper dishes, and the meal became much more harmonious.
After dinner, He Min wiped her mouth and, smiling, said, "I really like Miss Fang so much. Our He family doesn’t have any girls, and I didn’t have a daughter. Normally, I can’t even find anyone to go shopping with. Now that Miss Fang is here, it perfectly fits my wishes. If Miss Fang doesn’t mind, would you accompany me shopping this weekend?"
"Of course, it would be my honor to accompany auntie shopping," Fang Anning quickly agreed with a smile.
He Min smiled and said, "The scenery of this mansion is quite nice. Miss Fang, feel free to look around. Fengfeng, you are familiar with this place, you accompany Miss Fang."
"Why should I accompany her? She scolds me the moment she sees me," Liao Hanfeng said.
He Min sternly reprimanded, "You deserve to be scolded, always finding excuses whenever asked to do something. If not scolding you, then who?"
Liao Hanfeng pursed his lips, reluctantly standing up to take Fang Anning out for a stroll.
Actually, Fang Anning didn’t want to go out with Liao Hanfeng, but seeing He Min’s demeanor, she must have wanted to speak privately with He Tingchen.
Thus, she wisely followed Liao Hanfeng out.
"You’re quite impressive too, managing to win over even my difficult mother. It seems the position of Young Mrs. He is secured by you. I really underestimated you, thinking you were just an insignificant wild girl, but you’re quite scheming."
As soon as they were outside, Liao Hanfeng started mocking Fang Anning.
Fang Anning angrily retorted, "Liao Hanfeng, have you taken gunpowder? Finding fault with me every time you see me, is it because of the last time I had a disagreement with Bai Yunzhu?"
"You still have the nerve to mention Yunzhu. She was humiliated because of you and cried for a long time," Liao Hanfeng said angrily.
Fang Anning chuckled, "It is indeed because of Bai Yunzhu, but with all your eagerness, she might not necessarily like you."
"That’s none of your business," Liao Hanfeng snapped.
Fang Anning rolled her eyes, not wanting to bother with it anyway.
The two wandered in the yard without talking to each other and then headed back.
However, just as they reached the door, they heard He Min loudly saying to He Tingchen inside, "How many years has it been, and you still haven’t forgotten her?"
Fang Anning involuntarily raised her eyebrows and stopped.
Liao Hanfeng pushed the door and entered, and indeed He Min was visibly angry, sitting sternly in her chair.
But He Tingchen appeared indifferent, showing no emotion.
Liao Hanfeng quickly gestured to Fang Anning with his eyes, urging her to say something to ease the tension.
Fang Anning gave him a glare. What could an outsider like her say to ease things?
Liao Hanfeng, seeing that she was not hopeful, had no choice but to say, "Mom, Miss Fang just said she’s tired and wants to go rest. It’s also getting late, why don’t you rest too? Staying up late can age you."
"Is Miss Fang tired?" He Min asked, looking at Fang Anning.
Fang Anning internally cursed Liao Hanfeng, who was obviously deliberately drawing the fire towards her.
"Heh, I’m okay."
She tried to make her smile as sincere as possible!
He Tingchen then spoke up, "Since you’re tired, let’s end it for today."
After saying that, he stood up, without even bidding farewell to He Min, taking Fang Anning’s hand and leaving.
Fang Anning, one hand held by the man, the other holding a gift, turned her head to say goodbye to He Min, "Auntie, goodbye, see you on Sunday."
She was awkwardly dragged along, in a complete disarray!
