How I Became The Devil's Last and Only Love -
Chapter 151 - 139: Love in Vain
Chapter 151: Chapter 139: Love in Vain
The next day, Fang Anning was going out and naturally took Mrs. Chen with her.
After arriving at the mall, Fang Anning suddenly said she wanted to drink some juice and asked Mrs. Chen to buy it for her.
"Why don’t we go home? I can make you some fresh juice at home," Mrs. Chen suggested.
But Fang Anning was displeased and said: "But I want it now. Hurry and go get it. I’ll wait for you here."
Mrs. Chen had no choice but to go buy the juice.
Yet, when she returned with the juice, Fang Anning, who had been sitting here waiting, was nowhere to be seen. Only a bodyguard was left.
"Where is the wife?" Mrs. Chen hastily asked.
The bodyguard said: "She went to the restroom."
"Why didn’t you follow her?" Mrs. Chen asked anxiously.
The bodyguard, embarrassed, said: "I’m a man and the wife wouldn’t let me follow. How could I insist on doing so?"
"Idiot, couldn’t you have waited outside the restroom?" scolded Mrs. Chen.
After scolding him, she immediately ran toward the restroom, but after checking every stall, she didn’t find Fang Anning.
Mrs. Chen turned pale with fright.
She immediately called Fang Anning, but no one answered.
Mrs. Chen then hurriedly called He Tingchen, sobbing, "Sir, I’m sorry, I’ve lost the wife."
"What do you mean?" He Tingchen asked with a low voice.
Mrs. Chen said: "The wife asked me to get some juice, and when I returned after buying it, she was gone. The bodyguard said she went to the restroom, but I checked each one and didn’t find her. I’m sorry, I’ve lost the wife."
"Go check the surveillance immediately; I’ll be right there," He Tingchen said.
Mrs. Chen nodded in agreement and immediately ordered the bodyguard to retrieve the surveillance footage.
When He Tingchen arrived, the surveillance had already been reviewed, showing that Fang Anning indeed headed toward the restroom.
But she didn’t enter and instead took a turn and left through another safety exit of the restroom.
Mrs. Chen, with a panicked expression, asked, "Is the wife... escaping?"
Because Fang Anning carried a bag larger than usual when leaving the house, Mrs. Chen didn’t think much of it at the time. But considering the current situation, Mrs. Chen was sure Fang Anning had premeditated her escape by packing something in the bag.
She had even helped her carry the bag when leaving.
The bag was heavy, and she had asked Fang Anning what she had packed, only to be sternly scolded by her, which scared Mrs. Chen from checking further.
Had she known Fang Anning planned to escape, she would have checked thoroughly.
"Send people to look for her," He Tingchen ordered coldly, his eyes deepening.
The bodyguard nodded and immediately carried out orders to search for Fang Anning.
Mrs. Chen, meanwhile, was pale and kept apologizing to He Tingchen: "I’m sorry, sir, it’s all my fault. I’m to blame for not keeping a closer watch on the wife. Punish me, it’s all my fault."
He Tingchen ignored her, closed his eyes, unreadable in thought.
At this moment, after leaving the mall, Fang Anning directly took a taxi to meet Bai Yunyang.
When she arrived, Bai Yunyang was already waiting inside.
Entering, Fang Anning said to Bai Yunyang: "Did you get the boat ready as I asked you?"
Bai Yunyang nodded: "Yes, it’s all arranged."
Fang Anning breathed a sigh of relief.
He Tingchen must think that she took her ID to either take a bus or a plane.
But she wouldn’t take either; she would go by boat, leaving Yun City first. Then she would buy a ticket in the neighboring city. Even if He Tingchen had a powerful network in Yun City, it would be hard for him to find her in the next city over.
By the time he found out, she would have already fled.
China is so vast; she could run anywhere, and it would not be easy for him to find her.
"Leaving Yun City, where do you plan to go? Do you have a place to stay?" Bai Yunyang asked.
Fang Anning shook her head: "No place to stay. I’ll just run wherever I can and figure it out as I go along."
"But you’re a woman and you’re pregnant at that. It’s very dangerous for you to be out and about like this," Bai Yunyang added.
Fang Anning replied, "I’ve grown up like a weed since I was little, and I’m used to it by now. Everywhere is the same to me; there’s no such thing as safe or dangerous. Besides, staying here is the real danger. Alright, let’s not talk too much. I need to get on the boat before it gets too late to avoid complications."
"Okay, getting on the boat is not a problem, I can arrange for someone to take you immediately. But you told me before, you knew that woman didn’t die, what did you mean by that? You also said you could arrange a meeting between me and her, which you have yet to do," Bai Yunyang said.
Fang Anning’s expression stiffened, and she awkwardly said, "I did intend to arrange a meeting for you with her, but as you can see, I’m on the run now, so I definitely can’t set up the meeting. However, I can assure you that she’s definitely not dead, she’s locked up in the backyard of the He family’s old mansion. With your resources, it shouldn’t be a problem for you to find a way to meet her."
"So, you were just stringing me along to arrange for your escape by boat?" Bai Yunyang frowned.
Fang Anning said, "I wasn’t stringing you along. I couldn’t let you do something for nothing. This is He Tingchen’s business proposal for the southeastern region. I know your Bai Group is also looking into this matter. This proposal should be far more important to you than meeting that woman, right?"
Fang Anning took out a business proposal from her bag.
Sure enough, Bai Yunyang’s expression changed. After he took the proposal and looked through it, he smiled and said, "To think He Tingchen let you take something so important. It’s clear he still treats you very well. I can’t understand why you would betray him. Isn’t it better to stay by his side?"
"Not better, of course not," Fang Anning said coldly. "If I stay by his side, I’ll die, and something will happen to the child in my womb. My life is my own, and I must protect my child’s life. I won’t allow anyone to use us."
"What do you mean? So what’s the real reason you’re leaving He Tingchen?" Bai Yunyang asked.
Fang Anning took a deep breath and said, "I’m not afraid to tell you, He Tingchen has a child with that woman. I don’t know why that woman went crazy. But it must be He Tingchen’s wrongdoing; not only did the woman go mad, their child also became ill. The reason He Tingchen wanted me pregnant and treated me so well was just to use my unborn child to cure their sick child. Despite all this, do you think he’s truly good to me? I’m just a tool for his use."
"So, you’re going to betray him and leave him without even asking if things are as you suspect?" Bai Yunyang asked.
Fang Anning said sternly, "Would he let me go if I asked? He’d just become wary of me and confine me. Therefore, I have no choice but to drug and deceive him and sneak away before he realizes. Otherwise, I’d have no chance to escape."
"Alright, stop wasting time and hasten your people to get me on that boat. If we delay any further, He Tingchen will find me," Fang Anning urged Bai Yunyang impatiently.
However, as soon as she finished speaking, she heard the familiar voice of a man saying, "It seems you do know a little about me after all, not completely unaware."
Fang Anning turned pale and, stiff-necked, turned her head to look behind her.
Sure enough, the door opened, and He Tingchen walked in with a calm face, accompanied by men.
Bai Yunyang stood up and scoffed at He Tingchen, "I didn’t expect you’d nearly be outwitted by your own lover."
"You actually betrayed me?" Fang Anning looked at Bai Yunyang in disbelief.
Bai Yunyang sighed and said, "Miss Fang, our paths have crossed but once. And frankly, I didn’t expect you to actually believe me."
Fang Anning scoffed, "So, from the very beginning, you agreed just to deceive me? Right, I’m just too naive. For a businessman like you, interests always come first. What could I give compared to what He Tingchen offers? Why would you offend He Tingchen for a minuscule advantage for me?"
"It’s good that Miss Fang understands. So, please don’t blame me."
After saying that, Bai Yunyang left the place.
Soon, only Fang Anning and He Tingchen’s men were left in the private room.
He Tingchen waved his hand, signalling his men to leave.
Once it was just Fang Anning and He Tingchen alone in the room, Fang Anning suddenly felt less tense. She sat down on the sofa and asked softly, "Were you surprised to hear from Bai Yunyang about my plan to run away?"
"Not surprised," He Tingchen replied in a deep voice.
Fang Anning scoffed, "How could you not be surprised? In your eyes, I’m hopelessly in love with you, willing to have your child, willing to listen to you, obedient to a fault. But suddenly wanting to leave, how could you not be surprised?"
"Can I say that from the moment you suddenly went to see the old man and asked about the backyard, I was aware of your plans? Do you believe me?" He Tingchen said.
Fang Anning turned pale and immediately said, "How could that be?"
He Tingchen said, "I’m not as foolish as you think. I’ve always paid close attention to your actions, especially when you act out of the ordinary. Just a bit of deduction, and a few inquiries, and a lot of things start making sense. What’s more, you later made it so obvious by having Li Xiaoxiao fake a breakup with Ah Feng to get information from him, and by arranging for Li Xiaoxiao’s subsequent affairs as if you were preparing for your demise. How could I not guess what you were planning?"
Fang Anning’s face turned pale.
She scoffed after a while and muttered, "I thought I had arranged everything perfectly in secret. Little did I know, you had everything under control. Watching me arrange all these, did you find it amusing? Probably thought I was just a joke?"
"I’ve been waiting for you, actually," He Tingchen said.
"Waiting for me? Waiting for what?" Fang Anning asked bitterly.
He Tingchen said, "Waiting for you to ask what’s the deal with the backyard, who that crazed woman was, and what’s the story with the child? Regrettably, I thought I treated you well, thought we had reached an understanding, only to find all my deep feelings were in vain, because from the beginning to the end, you never trusted me."
"So, what you mean is that I misunderstood you? There was no crazed woman and no sick child. And you, you never intended to use my child as a cure for someone else’s ailment?" Fang Anning challenged.
