Chapter 58: Your stubbornness almost got you killed just now

"Don’t worry," she whispered, a golden glow radiating around her body. "You won’t be able to."

The next instant, she vanished.

BaiShe had only a fraction of a second before a golden flash struck his flank. He raised his sword just in time, deflecting the blow that sent tremors through his arms upon impact. His body was hurled hundreds of meters away.

Yuying reappeared behind him, her palm shimmering with blinding light. A barrage of attacks followed, each faster than the last. BaiShe parried as much as he could, his sword tracing silver arcs in the air, but she was too swift.

A direct hit struck his chest, sending him tumbling across the battlefield. He rose immediately, but Yuying was already upon him.

He blocked a strike with the flat of his sword, but it shattered under the force of the impact, sending shards of light in all directions.

’This sword is quite sturdy, but...’

BaiShe glanced at the broken sword before sheathing it. "Enough playing around."

His aura intensified suddenly. A silver glow rose around him, mingling with an odd golden light. His body vibrated with the intensity of the Qi flowing into him. His palm began to glow softly.

’What am I doing here again?’ He wondered in a fraction of a second.

The wind howled around them as they soared at breakneck speed. Yuying pursued closely, her golden aura illuminating the dark skies like an artificial sun.

Suddenly, she disappeared.

BaiShe had just enough time to cross his forearms before a lightning-fast kick sent him flying through the clouds. His body pierced through several layers of the atmosphere before he managed to stabilize his trajectory. But already, she was upon him.

He blocked a first punch, but the shockwave exploded the air around them. His arm trembled under the impact. Before he could retaliate, Yuying pivoted gracefully, her silhouette blending into a golden flash, and slammed her knee into his stomach.

*Crack*

A sinister crack of his broken sternum.

BaiShe grimaced, his breath stolen by the force of the blow. He spat a mouthful of blood but forced himself to grab her arm.

"Why..."

He locked his burning gaze with hers.

"Why are you holding back?"

Yuying didn’t answer. Her golden pupils remained unfathomable, yet a strange melancholy lingered in them.

She twisted her arm to break free, executed a fluid spin, and slammed her elbow directly into his temple. BaiShe saw the attack at the last moment and barely dodged, but the displaced air burst a cloud behind him.

Each exchange was an explosion of light and raw power. Every strike transformed a section of the landscape into ruins.

BaiShe felt his own body reacting at a speed he had never known. He was predicting her attacks more and more before they even occurred.

His hand shot forward, aiming for Yuying’s flank. But before he could strike, she made a barely perceptible movement, dodged, and countered.

Her fist sliced through the air in a golden streak. BaiShe barely parried, but a shockwave sent him reeling backward. He regained his balance, struck back, but she vanished again in a flash before reappearing above him.

A moment later, a foot slammed into his back.

The impact hurled him toward the ground like a meteorite.

BaiShe felt the air burn around him as he spiraled downward. At the last second, he flipped his body and struck the ground with his foot, creating a titanic shockwave that pulverized the earth around him.

Yuying charged at him, a lance of light materializing in her hand.

BaiShe saw the danger too late.

The sharp tip pierced the air with a shrill whistle, aiming directly for his heart.

His body reacted before his mind.

He tilted his torso at the last moment, avoiding the attack by a hair’s breadth. But the blade of light grazed his shoulder, slicing the flesh in a clean, burning cut.

Yuying gave him no respite. With a fluid motion, she spun the lance and unleashed a flurry of rapid strikes.

BaiShe parried as best he could, but some attacks breached his defenses. His skin was covered in fine, glowing cuts, each burning like molten metal.

Without hesitation, he charged, his fist enveloped in a silver glow.

The blow struck her squarely in the chest.

A shockwave ravaged the air around them.

But as he thought he had hit her—

"Qi Barrier!?"

"Too late..."

A fist slammed into his jaw with inhuman force.

A knee exploded into his abdomen.

BaiShe didn’t even see the final blow coming.

Blinding light flooded his vision.

He felt the ground slam into his body. His breath was short, his body aching. But he rose. Slowly.

Yuying watched him, her expression unreadable, before hurling her weapon.

He barely dodged, the weapon embedding itself deep into the earth, then she delivered a vicious knee strike, sending him flying.

The lance exploded in a wave of golden energy, devouring the space around them.

"Your stubbornness almost got you killed just now."

He took a few steps back, feeling a chill run down his skin.

He was fighting at the peak of his nascent soul, combined with the boost of his Illuminated Constitution, but had zero percent chance of defeating her. He could only endure. And had no chance to counterattack.

"I know what you are..."

Yuying’s voice was barely audible, yet it carried an inexplicable weight. Her eyes held a sad glint as she attacked again.

BaiShe clenched his teeth.

"I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I just want to kill the man you’re protecting."

Yuying’s gaze darkened.

"You’re not strong enough. You’ll just die."

"Then try to stop me!"

A flash of light danced between his fingers.

"Even if it means crippling you."

BaiShe didn’t know why. Everything in him screamed to stop this fight, but at the same time, he couldn’t stop. It was as if something deep within him was awakening, rebelling, rising up against this woman he had never seen before. He didn’t understand. His mind was in turmoil, unable to analyze the situation with clarity.

But what he was certain of was that Yuying had made an irrevocable decision. Her gaze had grown colder, sharper. Her aura had become denser and more oppressive. The softness he thought he saw in her had vanished, replaced by a radiant ferocity.

With a flick of her wrist, she summoned lances of light that shot toward him with terrifying speed.
