Heroines, I'm Really not the Devourer
Chapter 54: If they stand in my way, I’ll slit their throats

Chapter 54: If they stand in my way, I’ll slit their throats

The battle had finally ended. After eight days of relentless clashes, the war cries had given way to a heavy silence, broken only by the crunch of monster carcasses beneath the survivors’ feet.

Many believed it was the work of the ancients to test the new generation. But in truth, it was the doing of Hu Fei. He had unleashed a wave of frenzied monsters with his foul aura, repulsive even to the beasts themselves. BaiShe, issuing the command, sought to gauge the abilities of the most powerful among the younger generation, especially Qing Long. He was the only one for whom BaiShe had yet found no means to kill. The man even bore the Yin-yang symbol on his forehead. His destiny and potential were far too monstrous for his current power.

BaiShe stood atop a mountain of carcasses, his white cloak stained with blood. The cultivators present gazed at him with admiration, but also with a hint of apprehension. He had not fought merely for his own survival, nor even for the glory of his family. He had traversed the battlefield, protecting those who fought with courage, whether they were disciples of a great sect or mere wandering cultivators.

Qing Long, the imperial prince and leader of the disciples of the Immortal Tao, leaped onto the pile of corpses and extended his hand.

"Martial Brother, without you, there would have been far more deaths among our ranks."

BaiShe glanced at the outstretched hand for a moment before grasping it.

"I don’t save them out of nobility, like you, Prince."

Qing Long raised an eyebrow.

"Hm?"

"I only save those who have the courage to fight. Cowards who flee at the first obstacle... their agony holds no interest for me."

The imperial prince slowly nodded, his gaze thoughtful.

"Everyone has their own way of thinking. But I believe that saving a life, regardless of the reason, remains a noble act."

He sighed and continued, his tone tinged with annoyance.

"Unfortunately, we found no trace of the Devourer. He must have fled."

BaiShe, who until then had seemed indifferent, carefully observed the prince, a cold glint in his eyes.

"Prince, would you like to hear my true thoughts?"

"I would."

BaiShe crossed his arms and fixed his gaze on the devastated battlefield.

"When I faced that foul being in the lower realm, it did not appear out of nowhere to kill Xuan Shen... but had hidden among the disciples, waiting for the opportune moment to strike..."

Qing Long slightly narrowed his eyes.

"Oh..."

"The Devourer is not just an abomination hungry for essences. It is intelligent, cunning..."

He paused and swept his gaze over the gathered cultivators. His eyes gleamed with intensity.

A smile appeared on Qing Long’s lips.

"It conceals its aura to hide among us."

He had long studied the history of the Age of Calamities and was well acquainted with the First Devourer. Unlike the second, the former was capable of completely masking its existence. If BaiShe was right, then they faced a threat far greater than they had imagined.

"Interpret it as you wish, Prince."

BaiShe turned and walked away, but Qing Long held him back by the arm.

"Wait."

BaiShe lowered his eyes to the hand restraining him.

"I’ve never seen such hatred in a gaze."

He unconsciously lowered his eyes to his own bandaged arm, still bleeding beneath the wrappings.

"I, too, have an objective to accomplish."

BaiShe locked eyes with the prince, his features animated by cold determination.

"Help me kill it first."

Qing Long burst into laughter.

"And if I tell you that my goal is to destroy in order to pacify? Are you sure you have the courage?"

BaiShe violently pulled his arm free from the prince’s grip.

"It doesn’t matter."

He resumed his walk, but the prince’s voice made him stop abruptly.

"The Jade Emperor..."

"..."

The prince continued: "Erebus..."

A shiver ran down BaiShe’s spine.

He remained silent.

"Thor..."

Still no reaction.

"Ereshkigal..."

BaiShe clenched his teeth.

"Shiva—"

"You should avoid mentioning their names."

Qing Long smiled.

"So, what do you think?"

BaiShe showed nothing outwardly, but his mind was racing.

Those names... Those beings... They were the very embodiment of the pinnacle of power on other continents. Merely uttering their names could draw their attention.

’Is this madman aware of what he’s doing?’

’What did he mean by pacifying with beings no less powerful than his own Hu Sijin?’

BaiShe wanted to scream, but he forced himself to maintain an impassive facade.

’I just wanted to avoid being his enemy... And now he’s drawing the hostility of the most powerful beings in the upper world.’

He tried to reassure himself.

’No matter how powerful they are, they won’t come here to kill me... Right? I have at least a century.’

But he knew he couldn’t afford to ignore this threat. Alienating these entities was more dangerous than facing a lost Devourer like himself.

"Titans, primordial gods, Devas, Vanes, Sovereigns of Tartarus... It doesn’t matter."

He raised his head, his gaze cold and full of arrogance.

"If they stand in my way, I’ll slit their throats."

Qing Long burst into laughter, his smile widening.

"Then... Let’s use each other to achieve our goals, heir of the ancestral Hu family." He patted BaiShe’s shoulder.

BaiShe fixed him with one last gaze before replying, his voice icy.

"I hope you survive, Imperial Prince."

...

"Damn! How could this have happened?"

Guowei clenched his teeth so hard his jaw might crack. He had lost completely. He, the undisputed leader of the new generation of the ancestral Hu family, the presumed heir, the one all young Hu warriors followed without hesitation... reduced to a mere extra.

Everything had changed with BaiShe’s appearance.

He had not only returned. He had appeared at the ninth star of the Born of Soul stage, a crushing power. He fought alongside the imperial prince himself, silencing rumors about the cancellation of his engagement with the Feng family. Seeing him thus, triumphant, annihilated all opposition at once.

Guowei knew it. He couldn’t compete. And the Hu warriors also understood. There was no question of offending the Matriarch’s son. One by one, they discreetly moved away, regrouping on BaiShe’s side. It was a gradual but relentless abandonment.

Guowei clenched his fists, feeling rage burn in his chest. His shredded shoulder bled profusely, the pain pulsing with every beat of his heart. He would likely have lost his life if Hu Zhen hadn’t pulled him from the battlefield just in time.
