Chapter 97: Side Story: Working at the Inn (Part 2)
Kaelion looked a little surprised at first, then paused to think.
However, just then, his younger brother Vaelrik tugged at his sleeve, causing Kaelion to lift his head.
"Big brother, let’s try it!" Vaelrik urged.
"Vaelrik," Kaelion said, his voice calm but concerned.
"I’ll be careful. And Seraphina can do some work too, right?"
Seraphina didn’t seem to fully understand what they were talking about, but she could tell it was something fun.
Her dark eyes were shining with excitement.
"I want to do it!" Seraphina exclaimed.
Kaelion, who was easily swayed by his younger siblings’ pleas, looked at Shen Xinghui with a troubled expression, then at Jenna and Henry.
When all of them nodded in agreement, Kaelion finally gave a shy smile.
"I’ll do my best," he said.
"Yes, do that. Fail a lot and learn from it," Henry encouraged.
"Fail?!" Kaelion reacted, startled.
"Even Xinghui made a lot of mistakes at first. He got orders wrong, delivered the wrong tables..." Henry teased.
"Hey, Henry!" Shen Xinghui protested, his face turning red from embarrassment.
It was true, but it was still embarrassing to have it pointed out.
Both Henry and Jenna burst out laughing at the sight of Shen Xinghui’s reddened face.
"Now, let’s make a lot food! I’m going to shopping first," Jenna said cheerfully.
"I want to go too!" Vaelrik shouted.
"Me too!" Seraphina chimed in.
Seeing that Jenna was going shopping, Vaelrik and Seraphina eagerly raised their hands and stood up, clearly excited.
But that would definitely be too much of a burden.
If left unchecked, the two of them would run off in all directions.
Before Shen Xinghui could say anything, Kaelion tugged on his sleeve and smiled with a slight look of concern
.
"I’ll go with them, so it’s fine. Mother can stay here. I think Father will come too."
"Kaelion..." Shen Xinghui started, but before he could continue, Jenna responded.
"That’s fine, Xinghui. Alright, Vaelrik, Seraphina, Kaelion, let’s go!"
With Jenna leading the way, the three children headed out.
Watching them leave, Shen Xinghui felt a little conflicted.
"Kaelion has grown up so well," Henry remarked, seemingly sensing Shen Xinghui’s feelings.
He poured him some more tea.
As he drank, he nodded his head slightly, his gaze lowered in thought.
"I think he’s a bit too well-behaved," Shen Xinghui said softly.
"Hmm?"
"At 13, he shouldn’t be so attached to his parents, yet he still has things he probably wants to say. Since Vaelrik was born, he’s become incredibly well-behaved. He doesn’t throw tantrums anymore. I can’t help but feel that he’s been holding back a lot, and that makes me feel sorry for him."
Kaelion was very obedient.
He never threw tantrums.
As a royal, he worked hard, yet he never showed it.
But that made Shen Xinghui worry.
He couldn’t help but think Kaelion must be lonely.
He had barely ever seen him acting like a carefree child.
Henry gently patted Shen Xinghui’s head with his large hand, nodding in understanding.
This made Shen Xinghui feel a great sense of relief.
"Indeed, he might be holding back a bit," Henry said.
"Right?" Shen Xinghui agreed.
"But I believe he truly loves his family as well," Henry added.
"Huh?" Shen Xinghui responded, puzzled.
"Even if he doesn’t need your help right now, there will come a time when he will. Always be there to catch him when that moment comes, and be sure not to miss the little SOS signals. That, too, is a form of love," Henry said while gently guiding Shen Xinghui’s thoughts.
Shen Xinghui paused to think about it.
Kaelion never argued, but it seemed that his growth from here on out would slow down.
He would grow rapidly until he reached a size where he could defend himself, but after that, human development was said to take about ten years for every one year of a child’s age.
Perhaps, in that process, there would be times when Kaelion would need Shen Xinghui’s help, or when he would need to be reprimanded.
There would be times when he would need to give Kaelion more love.
Shen Xinghui smiled naturally, and Henry smiled back.
Shen Xinghui thought to himself how wonderful his father was.
Just then, the shop’s doorbell rang, and Ignatius, who had been visiting the castle, walked in.
He smiled when he saw Shen Xinghui and bowed politely to Henry.
"Long time no see, Mr. Henry."
"Ignatius, please don’t be so formal with me. Come on in," Henry greeted him with a warm smile.
Ignatius smiled gently in return and sat next to Shen Xinghui, gently stroking Nyx’s cheek.
Ignatius and Henry had a close relationship.
Whenever Ignatius came by, the two would often share drinks together.
Although Ignatius called Henry "Mr. Henry," Henry called Ignatius name directly after Ignatius had been saddened when Henry had initially called him "His Highness."
Ignatius had considered both of them like his parents.
He once said that it made him lonely to be kept at a distance.
Shen Xinghui thought it was endearing how Ignatius didn’t act like a typical prince.
He truly liked that about him.
"So, where are the other children?" Ignatius asked.
"They went shopping with Jenna. Kaelion said he would be fine, though," Shen Xinghui replied.
"Well, the capital is safe, and Vaelrik knows how to handle things. There’s no need to worry," Ignatius said, reassuring them in his usual calm manner.
Having been an adventurer himself, Ignatius probably understood the children’s sense of adventure.
He had said that Vaelrik had a natural aptitude for becoming an adventurer.
If Vaelrik ever wanted to pursue that future, Ignatius wouldn’t object.
"Oh, Ignatius, by the way, I’ve decided to help out at the shop starting tomorrow," Shen Xinghui said quickly.
"Help at the shop?" Ignatius asked, a bit surprised.
Shen Xinghui explained his decision, and Ignatius looked a little startled, glancing at Henry with an apologetic expression.
However, Henry remained calm and nodded in agreement.
"It might cause some extra work for you, but..." Ignatius began.
family always cleared out the second floor of the inn to accommodate them.
