Chapter 61: The Miracle of Birth
Chapter 61: The Miracle of Birth
"It’s all about stamina!" she declared.
What do I care about stamina?
I’m dying!
Shen Xinghui thought, his mind a blur of desperation.
Then it happened—just as he felt another significant downward shift inside him, there was a sudden, sharp "pop" in his abdomen.
It felt as though a water balloon had burst within him.
Instantly, a gush of fluid soaked him, leaving him startled and drenched, followed by a wave of pain so intense that he screamed involuntarily.
"The water’s broken," the midwife announced, leaning in to check.
"Ah! Ahhhhhh!" Shen Xinghui cried, his body trembling uncontrollably.
His abdomen tightened involuntarily, forcing strength into his core and bringing brief relief from the pain.
However before he could cling to that reprieve, the midwife issued a dire warning.
"It’s not fully open yet! You cannot push!"
"I can’t stop it!" Shen Xinghui yelled, panic in his voice.
I’m going to die! I swear I’m going to die!
His body shook violently, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t stop the reflexive tightening in his abdomen.
What do you expect me to do?!
"If all the amniotic fluid drains now, you’ll suffer for it later!" the midwife admonished. "Focus on your breathing! Exhale carefully to manage the pain!"
"You’re asking for the impossible!"
Shen Xinghui did his best to breathe out slowly, but tears streamed endlessly, his body quaking from the relentless pain.
The waves wouldn’t stop, and he couldn’t see an end to it.
"Breathe out little by little! You mustn’t hold your breath during the pain!" the midwife instructed firmly.
"But the pain makes me hold my breath!" Shen Xinghui cried out, his voice filled with anguish.
What if I stop breathing altogether?
What then? he thought.
The midwife forced more sweet drinks into his mouth and massaged his back and waist firmly.
It provided a sliver of relief, but the constant sensation of fluid escaping from him felt unending.
It’s never-ending!
It won’t stop!
Shen Xinghui endured the excruciating pain for another hour.
During that time, he had lost count of how many times he asked, "Is it time yet?"
The midwife remained at his side, her hands hovering over him, observing the gradual progress.
However, the intensity of the pain made the process feel unbearably slow.
Each time he asked, she scolded him, "It hasn’t even been five minutes!"
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, an hour passed, and as the sky began to glow with the hues of sunset, he was moved to another area.
The small bed was prepared with a clean sheet, and a sturdy pole was positioned nearby, seemingly designed for gripping.
Shen Xinghui was laid down on the bed, his legs embarrassingly spread out and fixed in position.
"Now, the wait is over. The cervix is fully open! You can push as hard as you need!" the midwife declared.
How am I supposed to do that?! Shen Xinghui thought in despair.
"Hnnngh! Fuuu!"
A heavy, oppressive pain coursed through his entire body, forcing his muscles to contract involuntarily.
The midwife called out from somewhere nearby, "Exhale completely as you push!"
Following her instructions, he felt the weight within him shifting downward, slow but steady.
So that’s what the pole is for, he realized, gripping it tightly as he focused all his strength on the task.
"When the pain intensifies, channel it by applying steady, deliberate pressure. During the intervals, rest and conserve your strength," the midwife instructed.
"That’s... easier... said than... done!" Shen Xinghui groaned, his voice strained.
Although he could feel something descending within him, the progress was agonizingly slow.
Is this baby even going to come out?
What if I run out of strength first?
Yet, he continued, panting heavily and pushing for what felt like an eternity.
After several long minutes, the baby had moved significantly lower, but now it seemed stuck.
The sensation was unbearable, like trying to push something slightly larger than a softball through an impossibly small opening.
"I’m sorry! I can’t do this anymore! I really can’t!" he cried out, desperate.
"This is where the real challenge begins!" the midwife replied firmly.
"What does that even mean?!" Shen Xinghui screamed in frustration.
He felt cold sweat pouring down his face.
Is this what it means to risk your life?
This pain, this struggle—it’s too much!
"The head is almost out!" the midwife encouraged.
Through tear-blurred eyes, Shen Xinghui’s thoughts wandered to the people waiting for him.
Dominus, who had said he was looking forward to the baby.
The King and Queen, who had supported him.
And Ignatius, who had stayed by his side until the last possible moment, looking anxious but determined.
I want to show them.
I have to show them.
I can’t give up now.
If I do, what will happen to this child?
He considered the unthinkable—what if his weakness led to harm for the baby?
No!
I can’t let that happen!
"Fff... ughhhh!"
Determined, Shen Xinghui pushed past his limits.
I don’t care if it tears or breaks; I’ll do whatever it takes!
Memories of his dreams surged forward—a family of his own, spending weekends together, simple joys like hearing their child’s first words.
He felt a sharp sensation, almost like something snapping, as he pushed with every ounce of strength left in his body.
The immense pain reached its climax, and then, in one fluid motion, the baby slipped free.
The pain subsided almost instantly, leaving him in a state of relief so overwhelming it bordered on euphoria.
"Ahh... nyaaa!"
From somewhere nearby, he heard a faint but powerful cry.
Shen Xinghui who is dazed and exhausted, let out a weak laugh.
"You’ve done it well," the midwife said gently, placing a warm hand on his abdomen.
The comforting heat helped ease his trembling.
"It must have been so hard, bearing the child of a Dragon Man in a human body. You’ve suffered significant injuries," she said sympathetically.
Shen Xinghui glanced down and saw a pool of blood beneath him.
