Chapter 59: The Blessing and the Burden
Chapter 59: The Blessing and the Burden
Shen Xinghui could only laugh nervously.
I’m glad I ended up with Ignatius.
"Even so, Gabriel is late," Augustine commented.
"Gabriel?" Shen Xinghui asked curiously.
Apparently, they were expecting another visitor.
Ignatius glanced around, looking slightly on edge.
Giovanni nodded his head gently to Shen Xinghui in explanation.
"Gabriel is the most noble among the Dragon Man. He’s from the Golden Dragon family."
"Golden Dragon?" Shen Xinghui’s curiosity piqued.
Would he be dazzlingly radiant?
As he mused, a soft breeze swirled through the garden, scattering golden light.
Standing amidst the glimmering gold was a breathtakingly beautiful man.
His soft golden hair swayed in the wind, and his slightly downcast golden eyes shimmered.
He was tall, about the same height as Ignatius, and exuded a gentle presence.
As his gaze landed on Shen Xinghui, he smiled warmly.
"I apologies for the delay."
"Oh, no, it’s fine," Ignatius replied.
Ignatius looked worried, but the golden-haired man offered a resigned smile, stepping forward and bowing politely to Shen Xinghui.
"It’s pleased to meet you, spouse of Ignatius. My name is Gabriel Aurelion Sol Drakonis. I’ve been something of a childhood companion to him."
"Pleased to meet you. My name is Shen Xinghui," he replied.
When Shen Xinghui began to rise up to greet him, Gabriel gently stopped him, saying, "Please, take care of yourself."
"Gabriel, have you taken care of your business?" Ignatius asked with concern.
Gabriel gave a bitter smile and shook his head. "I declined."
"Did His Majesty accept that decision?" Ignatius asked carefully.
"It’s unlikely. But I can’t bear it anymore—forcing myself to suppress my emotions, using drugs to artificially heighten passion for a meaningless union. This is the right choice," Gabriel replied.
Shen Xinghui could piece together the conversation’s context.
It seemed to be about an arranged marriage—or, more precisely, a situation meant to produce an heir.
"I’m sorry," Ignatius said, his expression heavy. "It’s likely my situation has made your father impatient."
"Don’t do that, Ignatius," Gabriel said, his tone weary. "I don’t want to let jealousy taint this celebration. It’s simply longing for something I don’t have. Besides, even if I became a father under such circumstances, I doubt I could love them. That would be far too hollow."
Gabriel’s smile was tinged with sadness, and his exhaustion was evident.
"Wow, it’s really complicated, creating heirs, isn’t it?" Dominus interjected.
"Dominus?" Shen Xinghui said with a tilt of his head.
"I mean, people say I’m too restless to settle down, so I’ve never had to think about it. But Shen Xinghui managed to do it in one go, right? Augustine’s situation aside, doesn’t it seem like with enough effort, it could work out?"
"It’s no small feat," Augustine said with a wry smile. "It was a life-or-death matter for me."
Life-or-death?!
Shen Xinghui thought.
What kind of ordeal must his spouse have endured?
He couldn’t help but marvel at the spouse’s resilience—and Augustine’s intense attachment.
Is this the obsessive, all-consuming kind of love?
"Shen Xinghui certainly had an easy time," Gabriel remarked.
"Well, I have a certain skill that guarantees it," Shen Xinghui said casually, laughing along with the others.
In an instant, Ignatius’s expression turned uneasy, while the others stared at him in shock.
"Wait, what kind of skill is that? A guarantee?" Dominus asked, eyes wide.
"Shen Xinghui..." Ignatius muttered.
"Huh? Oh—ahhhh!"
Shen Xinghui’s face turned red as he realized he had let a secret slip.
I’ve gotten way too relaxed!
Where’s my sense of self-preservation?!
"Wait, do you mean you have God’s of Pregnancy and Childbirth’s Blessing kill ?" Gabriel asked, clearly astonished.
Blushing furiously, Shen Xinghui nodded his head.
"What level is it?" Gabriel pressed.
"...MAX," Shen Xinghui admitted hesitantly.
"Level 100?!" Gabriel exclaimed.
Even Augustine and Giovanni looked stunned.
Under their incredulous gazes, Shen Xinghui shrank into himself, feeling utterly mortified.
"I see," Giovanni said, nodding as though everything made sense now. "The unusually short duration of your pregnancy must be thanks to that skill."
"...Yes," Shen Xinghui replied meekly, wishing the topic would end.
"This kind of talent is unheard of. Shen Xinghui, you must never share this information with anyone," Giovanni said firmly.
"You especially need to ensure that my father never hears of it," Gabriel added, his expression serious. "If he did, he’d likely go so far as to abduct you and force a marriage between us."
"What?!"
Gabriel’s grim continuation of Giovanni’s warning struck Shen Xinghui like a bolt.
The tone was serious, and though the words sounded absurd, the absence of humor in their eyes made it clear—this wasn’t a joke.
"The golden dragon population has drastically declined," Gabriel explained. "My father is acutely aware of this and has become desperate, to the point of losing all discretion. He even approached Augustine’s spouse with a similar proposal once, despite their situation. Augustine’s partner didn’t possess any special skills, and Augustine’s overwhelming devotion prevented it from going further."
"But in your case, Shen Xinghui," Giovanni interjected, "you possess a skill with unmatched allure. If your abilities were known, Gabriel’s father would stop at nothing to ensure success. Even if Gabriel had no intention of pursuing it, his father might resort to extreme measures—such as muddling your consciousness to force compliance. With your pregnancy only lasting seven days, he might even see it as nothing more than a brief trip."
"That’s terrifying!" Shen Xinghui exclaimed.
Augustine added, "It’s no exaggeration. Gabriel’s father is entirely capable of declaring war on the Black Dragon Family if he believes it necessary."
"Augustine!" Gabriel snapped.
"I merely thought it prudent to acknowledge the possibility," Augustine replied calmly.
Shen Xinghui who is horrified, muttered, "Am I really in such a dangerous situation? This skill is more like a curse in some ways..."
However, even as the thought crossed his mind, he reconsidered.
No, that’s not true.
Thanks to this skill, I’ve been able to give someone as precious as Ignatius a treasure they cherish.
This happiness I feel now... it’s worth everything.
The following days passed peacefully.
