Chapter 55: Meeting the In-Laws

Now, the two of them sat side by side on the sofa while staring at Shen Xinghui’s stomach.

They were discussing their child’s surprisingly imminent arrival.

"So... it’s fast, huh?" Shen Xinghui said.

"Yeah, really fast," Ignatius replied.

"To be honest, it doesn’t feel real yet."

"I’ll admit, I don’t quite feel it either."

"Right?"

Shen Xinghui sighed.

Pregnancy was supposed to take time—for emotional preparation if nothing else.

The idea of their child arriving in just a week felt overwhelming.

It wasn’t supposed to be like you’re making an instant noodles!

"Well... but..."

A gentle pat on the head and a warm embrace pulled Shen Xinghui closer.

Wrapped in Ignatius’ arms, he gradually began to feel calmer.

"Without a doubt, I’ll love the child we’re bringing into this world," Ignatius said with certainty.

"...I see," Shen Xinghui replied softly.

Looking up at Ignatius’ confident expression, Shen Xinghui felt a surge of reassurance.

He had been scared and hesitant before, but it dawned on him—he wasn’t alone in this.

"Of course, Xinghui, I love you too. That’s why, even if this is hard, please don’t feel isolated. If you’re ever worried, just tell me. I’m not great at picking up on things, so I might miss what’s troubling you. You’re in an unfamiliar place, experiencing something completely new. You can lean on me—I’ll support you."

"Ignatius..."

Shen Xinghui thought to himself how lucky he was to have such a wonderful husband.

His heart felt lighter, and warmth spread through him.

He smiled, and Ignatius, seeing that, smiled back in relief.

The next day, Shen Xinghui felt surprisingly better.

He could eat again, and it almost made him wonder if yesterday’s sickness had even happened.

His appetite returned so strongly that it left him baffled, but he made sure to focus on balanced meals.

Rapid weight gain wasn’t ideal, after all.

There was no noticeable change in his stomach yet, which was somewhat surprising.

He had expected things to happen faster, but apparently, the outward changes would come later.

With his health improving, Shen Xinghui found his sense of resolve strengthening.

He realized he was naturally optimistic and forward-looking—perhaps even resilient to a fault.

However, he also acknowledged his lack of knowledge.

He didn’t know much about raising children or what to expect from pregnancy, so he decided he needed to learn.

Unfortunately, there was no one with firsthand parenting experience around to ask.

For now, Shen Xinghui turned to books.

At his request, the midwife brought him a guide titled "A Proper Life for Expectant Mothers."

According to the book, noticeable growth in his belly would start around three to four months into pregnancy—which, in his accelerated case, meant it could start as early as tomorrow or the day after.

He braced himself for the changes to come.

Reading further, he learned about what to expect as the pregnancy progressed.

The book described how his belly would become taut and grow larger, but reassured him that sudden bouts of nausea were unlikely after the initial stages.

It emphasized the importance of balanced movement, proper nutrition, and overall mental and physical health.

However, the real challenge lay ahead: the delivery.

In just seven days, labor would begin.

The book detailed the process—contractions starting at intervals, becoming shorter and more frequent, then transitioning into stronger, continuous pain.

Eventually, the water would break, leading to even more intense labor pains before the child was born.

"Wow... that’s a little bit terrifying," Shen Xinghui murmured to himself, feeling a pang of fear.

He clung to the hope that his skills would help him through it.

He was pretty sure he had a Pain Resistance skill—he hoped that would make a difference.

As he was absorbed in his thoughts, a sudden knock on the door pulled him back to the present.

Shen Xinghui looked up and called out, and Ignatius entered with a somewhat troubled expression.

"What’s wrong, Ignatius?" Shen Xinghui asked.

"I apologies, Xinghui. Someone wants to meet you," Ignatius said with hesitation.

"Me?" Shen Xinghui tilted his head in confusion.

In this unfamiliar world, the only people he knew were Dominus, Jenna, and Henry.

Who could it be?

"Apparently, the midwife sent a letter to my parents, and... well..."

"Oh, your parents," Shen Xinghui said, understanding dawning on him.

Well, of course.

If someone hears their son is having a child, it’s only natural for the parents to be surprised and want to meet the person involved.

But... wait a second.

If Ignatius’ parents are coming, that means... the king and queen?

Shen Xinghui froze, his face going pale as he stood up.

This could be bad—really bad.

After all, how would it look if some random nobody was marrying their prince?

Surely, they’d care about things like pedigree, lineage, or social status.

They’d want to know where he came from.

"Um, I..."

He felt the weight of his shortcomings crash down on him.

He had nothing to offer.

Love alone wasn’t always enough in a world like this, and Ignatius belonged to a world where such things mattered deeply.

"Xinghui!"

Before he could spiral further, Ignatius pulled him into a tight embrace and wiping away the tears that had unknowingly started falling.

Shen Xinghui was trembling, his mind overwhelmed with a single thought: What am I going to do?

The reassuring hand rubbing his back gave him a small sense of comfort.

"No matter what happens, I’ll protect you. And I’m sure my parents will like you," Ignatius said firmly.

"But I... I have nothing," Shen Xinghui murmured, his voice shaky.

"That doesn’t matter. I chose you. And if they do oppose us, I’ll leave this kingdom if I have to."

"...What?"

Ignatius had said it so casually that it stunned Shen Xinghui.

He looked up at him, but Ignatius simply nodded his head with unwavering determination.

"I’m a Rank A Adventurer. I can provide for you and our child without issue."

"But—"

"It’s fine. Trust me. I swear, I’ll never leave your side."
