Chapter 54: Morning Sickness and Sudden Realizations
He had never imagined himself creating a family, but the idea of protecting this warmth was unexpectedly appealing.
He felt a growing fondness for the child yet to be born, a love blooming in his heart even now.
It made him feel deeply happy.
Maybe this life in a strange, otherworldly place wasn’t so bad after all.
The next morning, Shen Xinghui slowly woke up, wrapped in the comforting warmth of Ignatius’ arms.
His body was damp with sweat, but it felt oddly pleasant.
From somewhere nearby, the aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air.
"Ugh..." he groaned.
"Xinghui?" Ignatius’ voice called softly.
Ignatius, now waking slowly, looked at Shen Xinghui with a puzzled expression.
It was only natural—Shen Xinghui had suddenly sat up, clutching his mouth as waves of nausea hit him.
That smell of bread, so rich and appetizing...
"Ugh...!"
"Xinghui!" Ignatius called out, alarmed.
Shen Xinghui didn’t have time to respond.
Leaping out of bed, he hurriedly searched the room, found the shower room, and stumbled inside, where he was overcome by the nausea and ended up vomiting.
What was happening to his body?
He was usually the kind of person with a strong stomach who could eat meat first thing in the morning, but now...
Ignatius, clearly worried.
He followed him to the shower room and he gently rubbing his back as he hunched over, tears welling in his eyes.
However, Shen Xinghui couldn’t even move.
He felt sick, weak, and utterly overwhelmed by the sudden changes in his body.
"Where’s the midwife?! Someone get the midwife!" Ignatius called urgently, wrapping Shen Xinghui in a warm robe and quickly putting on one of his own.
He stepped outside to fetch help.
Shen Xinghui slumped against the wall, feeling dizzy and faint.
He had a sinking suspicion about what was happening.
Could this be... morning sickness?
As the thought crossed his mind, he coughed weakly and sank to the floor.
His whole body felt heavy, lethargic, and unbearably tired.
Ignatius returned shortly and carrying Shen Xinghui back to the bed and laying him down gently.
The midwife arrived soon after and began a thorough examination.
"There’s no doubt about it—a child is growing within you! Oh, what a blessing. Truly, congratulations!" the midwife exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion as she clasped Shen Xinghui’s hand.
But Shen Xinghui wasn’t in the mood to celebrate.
He still felt nauseous and miserable.
Even a sip of water threatened to come back up.
"He seems to be feeling unwell," Ignatius said, concern etched on his face.
"It’s morning sickness," the midwife confirmed. "I’ll bring some lemon water to help soothe him. Is there anything he feels like eating?"
"For now..." Ignatius began, hesitant.
"I’ll bring some fresh fruit. Also, I’ll cast a barrier around this room to block out any strong odors," the midwife said reassuringly.
"Odors..." Shen Xinghui murmured weakly, his mind drifting.
The thought of the bread’s aroma hit him again.
He loved bread, so this sudden aversion felt like a cruel betrayal.
He had heard of people becoming unable to eat their favorite foods during pregnancy.
How did he even know this?
Well, growing up, the neighborhood moms had taken a liking to him.
Hoping for treats, young Shen Xinghui had often joined their tea parties and soaked up all kinds of knowledge, including random tidbits like this.
As he lay there, Shen Xinghui couldn’t help but feel a pang of shock—and a touch of humor—at the strange new reality he was living in.
A large hand gently stroked Shen Xinghui’s head.
Ignatius’ sharp, almond-shaped eyes softened with concern.
Although Shen Xinghui felt awful, it seemed Ignatius was struggling just as much.
Somehow, that thought made him feel a little better.
"How long is this going to last?"
Shen Xinghui asked the midwife.
He was beginning to worry—if he couldn’t eat for days, wouldn’t that be bad for the baby’s growth?
He needed to eat properly for the child’s sake.
However, the midwife didn’t seem concerned at all and responded with a light laugh.
"It should pass in a day. By tomorrow, you’ll likely feel just fine."
"Just one day? That short?"
Shen Xinghui couldn’t hide his surprise.
He had heard of people suffering from morning sickness for months.
Even as a child, he’d thought it sounded tough.
Ignatius tilted his head in confusion as well.
"Midwife, the Dragon Man pregnancies last seven months, and morning sickness typically lasts at least a month, doesn’t it?"
"Ah, but Master Xinghui possesses the God of Pregnancy and Fertility’s Blessing Skill at Level 100," the midwife explained with a knowing smile. "In addition, he has the Growth Acceleration skill as a secondary effect."
"Ah..."
"That’s likely the cause. The child is growing remarkably quickly. I heard the child was conceived just last night, but it’s already developed to the equivalent of over a month. At this rate, I’d estimate the baby will be born within seven days."
"...Excuse me?!"
Shen Xinghui and Ignatius exchanged stunned looks.
Seven days?
A week?
What kind of "instant pregnancy" was this?
Fast didn’t necessarily mean better!
"This has to be a joke, right?" Shen Xinghui asked weakly.
"I assure you, I don’t joke about such things," the midwife replied, slightly offended. "I am the most skilled medical practitioner in the Drakhtar Dominion, and I’ve never been wrong in my assessments."
"But... that’s just..."
Shen Xinghui’s mind raced.
What about mental preparation?
Emotional readiness?
And everything else that came with becoming a parent?
He glanced at Ignatius, who seemed just as bewildered.
Their eyes met, and it was clear they were both thinking the same thing: What are we supposed to do now?
Despite his initial nausea, Shen Xinghui managed to enjoy the lemon water and fruit brought by the midwife.
He ate like someone who had been starving, his body craving the nutrients.
Thankfully, it didn’t make him feel sick again and though Ignatius insisted he eat slowly to avoid upsetting his stomach.
