Chapter 43: Kindness at the Inn

The two of them were Dragon Man, after all.

Their distinctive gold pattern near the corners of their eyes and forehead gave it away.

"Oh my, you’re right! It’s no wonder you’re so small and thin!"

"In that case, you wouldn’t be able to finish this portion. Let’s split it and eat together," the man said.

Although they are surprised, the couple welcomed Shen Xinghui warmly.

They brought out three plates and divided the food among them.

Shen Xinghui was given a smaller portion—still a bit much, but their kindness was deeply touching.

Shen Xinghui ate until his stomach was full, maybe even a bit too full.

A warm cup of tea was placed in front of him, and Jenna smiled kindly.

As they ate, they introduced themselves.

Jenna was the innkeeper, and her husband was named Henry.

Together, they ran the inn.

Shen Xinghui shared some of his story—how he came to this world and how he was looking for work.

However, he didn’t mention anything about Ignatius.

"Shen Xinghui, why don’t you stay here tonight?" Jenna suggested warmly.

"Huh? Oh, no, I couldn’t possibly. You’ve already given me a meal; I’d feel terrible imposing further."

"What are you saying? You’re looking so pale and exhausted. Eat, sleep, and regain your strength—that’s the first step to recovery."

Shen Xinghui hesitated.

Accepting too much kindness felt wrong, and the voice inside him told him to not received their kindness so shamelessly.

However, Henry who is standing nearby, gently placed a hand on Shen Xinghui’s head and nodded.

"Jenna’s right. In your condition, you might collapse again. Luckily, this is an inn, and we have plenty of rooms. So, just stay her for the night."

Unlike Jenna’s bright, sun-like energy, Henry exuded a quiet kindness.

He had the air of a scholar, calm and composed, yet firm when gently scolding unreasonable behavior.

That warmth broke through Shen Xinghui’s defenses.

"Thank you so much."

"Don’t overthink it. Get some rest," Henry said.

"But I’d feel bad about taking one of your guest rooms. Even a simple space would be fine."

"In that case, use the room in the back on the first floor. It’s part of our family area, so no need to worry about it."

Grateful for the offer, Shen Xinghui followed Henry to the room.

It was small but cozy, with a warm futon and plenty of sunlight streaming in.

The simple furnishings—a bed and a desk—filled the space with a sense of comfort, carrying the fresh scent of sunshine.

"You can use this room. It’s an extra, so don’t worry."

"Thank you very much."

Shen Xinghui expressed heartfelt gratitude, closed the door, and removed his clothes.

Since everything left behind at Ignatius’s place had been his only set of belongings, the clothes he wore now were all he had.

The cloak gifted along the journey kept most of the dust off, but the sweat had accumulated.

"I’ll have to wash these later," he muttered.

Even though he had washed his undergarments in rivers along the way, he regretted not bringing more.

Before climbing into bed, he realized it might be a good idea to clean himself first.

Looking out the window, Shen Xinghui saw Jenna outside.

Opening the window, he called out to her.

"Excuse me, Jenna?"

"Oh, what is it?" she responded cheerfully.

"I’d like to rinse off first. Is there a well I can use?"

"A well? Don’t be ridiculous! We have a bath. Come this way."

Jenna’s sharp response left no room for argument.

Shen Xinghui quickly draped the cloak over himself and followed her as she led the way through the back entrance.

Thanks to her guidance, he found himself soaking in a warm bath.

Under the warm shower, Shen Xinghui thoroughly washed off the dirt and sweat from his journey.

Slipping into the prepared bathwater, he felt as if his body and soul were being revived.

The fatigue of the past days seemed to melt away entirely.

"Ah... this is bliss," he murmured, sinking into the water.

As his body relaxed, his mind wandered, and an image of Ignatius surfaced—memories of their time together on the road.

"It’s okay," Shen Xinghui whispered to himself.

The memories alone were enough.

Those moments were enough to make Shen Xinghui happy.

Meeting Ignatius, falling for his kindness and gentleness, and even sharing fleeting sweet nights—those memories were precious.

The pain in Shen Xinghui’s chest still lingered, a dull ache reminding him of the sadness and loneliness he carried.

Yet, no more tears came.

He had already cried all he could during his journey.

Now, he needed to look forward.

He couldn’t allow himself to lean on others forever.

"Tomorrow, I’ll start looking for work. Once I’ve saved up enough, I’ll move on to the next step. But before that, I need to properly thank Jenna and Henry."

He felt deeply grateful for their kindness.

Shen Xinghui realized he was truly fortunate to meet such warmhearted people.

After stepping out of the bath, he found a set of clean clothes left out for him.

However, they were much too large for him to wear.

Lacking any magical ability himself, Shen Xinghui hesitated awkwardly until Jenna came by.

She had apparently washed his own clothes and, noticing the ill-fitting garments, she used a spell to resize them.

Although Shen Xinghui felt a pang of embarrassment and looked down, Jenna, ever cheerful, brushed it off with a smile and told him to call for her anytime.

Once he donned the clean clothes and crawled into the bed, the faint scent of sunshine enveloped him.

Sinking into its warmth, the exhaustion of his journey hit him all at once.

His body felt heavy, his eyelids drooped, and he drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When Shen Xinghui woke, the sky outside was completely dark.

He realized he had been asleep for hours and quickly got up, heading to the main area of the inn.

There, he found Jenna and Henry enjoying tea together.

"Oh, you’re awake," Jenna greeted.

"I’m so sorry for sleeping so long," Shen Xinghui apologized.
