Chapter 38: Desperate Whistle
Chapter 38: Desperate Whistle
Ignatius walked ahead, while Shen Xinghui followed, using his stick as a makeshift cane.
Without it, he would have been left behind.
Even though his posture was awkward, it got the job done.
As they climbed, a sudden sound came from the forest.
Creak... creak... creak.
The faint noise made Shen Xinghui stop and focus his gaze in the direction it came from.
Instinctively, he tried to see what was there.
When his eyes locked onto it, fear paralyzed him and rendering him unable even to scream.
"Xinghui!"
Ignatius’s voice called out from up ahead, overlapping with the sound of trees being smashed apart.
The glowing golden eyes creature was suddenly right next to him.
Shen Xinghui saw the creature raising a massive clawed hand.
Time seemed to slow as everything unfolded in front of him.
Something enveloped his body, but the next moment, a bone-rattling impact shook his entire being.
The pain in his chest was crushing, almost as though his heart had stopped.
His consciousness began to fade.
His head throbbed and nausea overtook him.
He felt himself falling rapidly, his skin registering the sensation even as his mind grew hazy.
Occasionally, the descent seemed to slow and he felt warmth surrounding him.
Shen Xinghui vaguely understood that he was about to die in this unfamiliar world.
His feet were cold and wet.
His head throbbed and his stomach churned.
Shen Xinghui slowly pushed himself upright despite the sharp pain from the rocky ground beneath him.
The moment he lifted his head, he couldn’t hold back the bile rising in his throat and vomited.
His feet were submerged in a river, the icy water adding to his discomfort.
However, all of these sensations were swept away in an instant when he saw the scene in front of him.
"Ignatius?"
Ignatius lay beneath him, his entire body drenched in blood.
Ehen Xinghui himself wasn’t injured enough to be bleeding like that.
If so, then this blood...
"Ignatius!"
Shen Xinghui screamed desperately and rushing toward Ignatius’s side.
He touched Ignatius’s cheek and body, but there was no response.
His skin was unusually pale and while he was still breathing, it was shallow and faint.
"No... this can’t be happening..."
He was going to die.
Shen Xinghui frantically rummaged through his bag, pulling out a clean cloth to press against Ignatius’s side, where blood kept pouring out.
The flow didn’t stop and the cloth was soon soaked with blood.
"Please, no... don’t go... I’m begging you..."
Regret surged through him.
He wanted more time together with him.
He couldn’t understand why Ignatius had chosen to protect him and hated himself for being powerless.
His tears began to streamed down on his face, blurring his vision.
Then his eyes landed on the whistle Ignatius had given him.
If there were any other Dragon Man nearby, they would hear it.
Grasping it tightly, he placed it in his mouth and blew as hard as he could.
Fwooo... hissss...
Only the sound of air escaping came out.
Desperately, he blew again and again, but no sound come out.
Even as tears streamed down his face, he continued to try.
This whistle was the only thing he could cling to.
"Why?"
Why had Ignatius saved him?
Why was he so powerless?
Why hadn’t he been able to do anything?
Why had he relied on Ignatius’s kindness and followed him this far?
Why?
Fwooo... hissss.
Fwooo... hissss.
"Make a sound! Please, I’m begging you, just work!"
Fwooo... hissss.
"Ugh..."
If this was how things were going to end, Shen Xinghui thought bitterly, maybe it would have been better to have been devoured by that giant plant back then.
If this pain was the price, it might have been better not to have been saved.
What was the point of being summoned to this world as someone so useless?
Why was he, the worthless one, alive, while Ignatius wasn’t going to make it?
Fwooo... hissss!
The whistle slipped from his lips and Shen Xinghui could do nothing but cry.
He knew tears wouldn’t save anyone, yet they flowed relentlessly.
He couldn’t even lift Ignatius’s body, no matter how hard he tried.
Just as he gave up, unable to fully surrender, his trembling hands reached for the whistle again.
At that moment, the sky suddenly darkened.
Shen Xinghui looked up and froze in terror and instinctively cradling Ignatius’s head protectively.
Above him was a massive dragon, it had fiery red color body and its glowing crimson eyes fixed on him as it descended.
It’s going to eat me, Shen Xinghui thought, hunching over Ignatius as though to shield him.
The dragon was far too large for his sacrifice to satisfy it, but maybe it would buy a little time.
Maybe Ignatius would wake up and escape.
At the very least, Shen Xinghui couldn’t bear to watch this person be devoured.
As he held on tightly, a voice suddenly echoed directly in his mind.
"Hey, you there! Were you the one who blowing Ignatius’s whistle?"
"...Huh?"
Shen Xinghui looked up in shock.
The voice was sounds young, like that of a boy.
The dragon descended gracefully and as it reached a certain altitude, it began to glow softly.
The light wasn’t blinding but scattered gently, revealing a boy with bat-like wings fluttering behind him.
The boy’s hair was as fiery red as the dragon’s scales and his eyes sparkled like rubies.
The gold pattern highlighted the corners of his eyes and his forehead like Ignatius.
He looked to be about 17 or 18 years old.
"It is Ignatius! Wait—whoa! What happened to him?"
"Uh, this is..."
"Are you a friend of Ignatius’s?"
Shen Xinghui could barely form words.
He is was overwhelmed and close to fainting.
Still cradling Ignatius and tears streaming down his face, he managed to give him a small nod.
"Figured as much. First things first, let’s get Ignatius out of here."
"Wait, if you’re going to eat someone, take me instead!"
"Eat? What? I don’t eat humans!"
