Chapter 32: A New Beginning
Clarion nuzzled back, his eyes soft and affectionate.
Shen Xinghui found it hard to let go of the comforting connection.
"Clarion doesn’t usually warm up to people like this. It must really like you," the stablehand who looked like a man in his thirties, said with a warm laugh as he observed the interaction.
After leaving the stable, their next priority was securing a room at an inn.
Unsurprisingly, finding accommodation in the bustling capital was easy.
The journey after that fateful night had been smooth.
Shen Xinghui had tried a few times to ask Ignatius about the two men that night, but Ignatius only offered a conflicted expression and said, "It’s better if you don’t know."
Shen Xinghui eventually gave up, understanding that the truth might not bring him any comfort.
"Once we’ve had lunch, we’ll head to the administrative office. That’s where you can complete your registration," Ignatius explained as they planned their next steps.
"Yes," Shen Xinghui agreed, his heart lighter with the promise of a fresh start in this big city.
Although Shen Xinghui could have eaten on the first floor of the inn, he decided to step out to make the most of the day.
He found a charming bakery that also offered light meals and chose to dine there.
Taking a seat at one of the open terrace tables, he enjoyed his food while watching the lively streets of the capital.
Government buildings, it seemed, carried a universal air of formality and intimidation, no matter the world.
The one in this world was no exception—it exuded a certain prestige that made it feel unapproachable.
The registry for personal records was located on the first floor.
As soon as Shen Xinghui entered, his eyes were drawn to the wooden counters divided into sections, each staffed by an attendant.
He approached the counter where a rabbit girl was stationed.
Her light brown rabbit ears twitched animatedly, and she had a friendly, youthful appearance, with bright brown eyes and round black-rimmed glasses that stood out.
"Hello! Are you here to register a marriage today?" she asked cheerfully.
"No!" Shen Xinghui blurted, his face flushing crimson as he quickly denied it.
The memory of that night was hazy but not entirely forgotten.
He remembered what had happened—an impulsive, uncontrollable moment brought on by the aphrodisiac he had been affected by.
He had acted out of compassion, but reflecting on it still made Shen Xinghui feel deeply embarrassed.
"I’ve brought someone from another world. We’d like to register him," Ignatius said calmly, standing beside Shen Xinghui and holding his hand.
The rabbit woman’s eyes widened in astonishment. "Oh my! It’s been ages since we’ve had someone from another world! Please, have a seat. Let me get the paperwork..."
She began typing on a device that resembled a computer but with a slightly outdated design compared to what Shen Xinghui was familiar with.
"Sorry for the delay," she said with an apologetic smile. "It’s been so long since we’ve handled a registration for someone from another world."
Still smiling warmly, she eventually placed a square clay tablet in front of Shen Xinghui.
"Please write down your name, date of birth, and age on this," she instructed.
"That’s all?" Shen Xinghui asked, surprised.
He had expected to fill out much more—perhaps details about his address or occupation.
"Yes, that’s all. People who come from other worlds usually don’t have set residences or jobs yet, so this information is enough for now," she explained.
"Oh..." Shen Xinghui murmured, realizing she was right.
He didn’t have a place to live or any work lined up yet.
Taking the pen attached to the tablet, he began to write.
Although he intended to write in his previous language, the characters on the tablet automatically transformed into the unfamiliar language of this world.
The auto-conversion feature was incredibly convenient.
"Shen Xinghui, 22 years old, born September 24," he wrote.
"Shen Xinghui... Mr. Shen, correct?" the rabbit girl confirmed with a bright smile.
"Yes," he replied, smiling back at her infectious cheerfulness.
"Welcome to this world, Mr. Shen!" she said warmly.
Her enthusiasm made Shen Xinghui smile wider.
Beside him, Ignatius nodded his head approvingly.
"Is this gentleman your designated guardian and guarantor?" the rabbit girl asked, addressing Ignatius.
"Guardian?" Shen Xinghui looked up at Ignatius, confused.
He had hoped Ignatius would explain what that meant, but instead, Ignatius picked up the pen and began filling out the form silently.
"Your guardian is listed as Ignatius Chernobog Jörbahamut," the rabbit girl stated after reading the document.
"Wait... guardian?" Shen Xinghui echoed, surprised.
In Shen Xinghui’s world, a "guardian" typically referred to a parent or similar figure.
Did it mean the same thing here?
While he was still grappling with the idea, the rabbit girl tapped away on the device in front of her.
The glowing text on the clay tablet vanished, dissolving into light.
He noticed for the first time that the tablet was connected to the main device by a cord.
Is this the world’s equivalent of a tablet?
Shen Xinghui found it hard to determine whether this world was technologically advanced or antiquated.
"Your registration is now complete," the woman said with a smile. "Next, we’ll register your status. Please place your hand on the magical tool here."
"This one?" Shen Xinghui asked, pointing to a platform marked with the outline of a hand.
"Yes, right there," the woman confirmed.
Shen Xinghui placed his hand on the platform.
A swirl of pale blue light particles emerged, wrapping around his hand before flowing back into the machine.
"Now, let’s see your status..." the rabbit girl announced.
Numbers and text appeared on the clay tablet in front of him.
Shen Xinghui stared at the display, his heart sinking.
...

...
"...Is this strong? Or weak?" Shen Xinghui asked hesitantly.
"In terms of average stats for a human in this world... you’re about on par with a five-year-old kid," the rabbit girl admitted sheepishly.
