Chapter 26: A Night of Danger

His eyes flew open and he froze at the sight of a massive shadow looming just beyond the edge of the tent.

"What... What is that?" he stammered, his voice shaking.

Shen Xinghui groped around for something to hold onto in panic.

At the same time, Ignatius’s hand firmly gripped his hand.

"I’ll take care of it," Ignatius said in a calm, steady voice.

Shen Xinghui looked up to see Ignatius’s resolute expression as he began to rise.

However, fear overwhelmed Shen Xinghui, and he clung tightly to Ignatius’s leg, shaking his head silently.

He didn’t want Ignatius to leave.

He was too scared.

Looking at how scared Shen Xinghui was, Ignatius knelt down and pulled him into his strong embrace. "Don’t worry. The barrier around this tent is strong. Nothing can break through it."

"Then stay..." Shen Xinghui began, but before he could finish, Ignatius stood up and moved toward the tent’s entrance.

"!"

Shen Xinghui’s breath caught in his throat as he caught sight of the giant creature outside.

It was a wolf standing at least three meters tall.

Its red eyes glowed menacingly and its black fur bristled as it bared razor-sharp teeth.

The saliva dripped from its open jaws and the sheer size of the monster made Shen Xinghui feel like it could swallow him whole.

His body trembled uncontrollably.

Even Clarion who is standing under the tarp becomes tense, glaring at the beast but not stepping forward.

Ignatius exited the tent, and Shen Xinghui, unable to resist, peeked out after him.

Ignatius noticed and offered him a small, reassuring smile.

"If you’re scared, stay inside. This will be over quickly," Ignatius said with calm confidence.

Despite the words, Shen Xinghui couldn’t shake his terror.

His entire body buzzed with the palpable tension in the air.

No matter how strong Ignatius seemed, Shen Xinghui couldn’t help but feel that against a monster of this size, a human—even someone as capable as Ignatius—was at a disadvantage.

He’s going to be killed!

Shen Xinghui thought in panic.

But fear had frozen him in place, and all he could do was watch as the confrontation began.

The ring on Ignatius’s hand began to glow, and in an instant, a sword appeared in his grasp.

The massive blade seemed as long as Shen Xinghui’s height.

Ignatius hefted the sword confidently and stepped beyond the barrier he had set.

A piercing howl echoed through the night, followed by the heavy thud of the wolf’s massive claws digging into the earth.

The beast lunged, but Ignatius swiftly evaded its attacks and moved with precision to outmaneuver it.

The wolf’s front paws slammed down, but Ignatius was always a step ahead.

Its snapping jaws and whipping tail failed to land even a glancing blow and Ignatius danced nimbly around the beast, avoiding every attack.

Finally, Ignatius leaped onto one of the wolf’s massive forepaws and propelled himself into the air.

His sword arced down and buried itself deep into the beast’s back.

The wolf thrashed in pain, trying to shake him off, but the blade remained lodged in its flesh.

With a swift and decisive motion, Ignatius dragged the sword along the wolf’s back, splitting it open.

The beast let out a final, agonized cry before collapsing onto its side.

Standing beside the lifeless wolf, Ignatius muttered, "What a nuisance."

He appeared as composed as if he had just completed a mundane chore.

Seeing him unscathed, Shen Xinghui was flooded with relief and immediately ran toward him.

His fear wasn’t for the monster—it was for Ignatius’s safety.

The thought of Ignatius being hurt terrified him.

"It’s all right now, Xinghui," Ignatius said reassuringly.

"No, that’s not it..." Shen Xinghui stammered.

His voice trembled as he tried to explain, "I-I was worried... if you were get hurt..."

Ignatius seemed to understand, even though Shen Xinghui struggled to articulate his feelings.

He smiled gently and wrapped his arms around Shen Xinghui to comfort him.

"I’m fine. I’m not hurt at all," Ignatius said softly.

"Good... That’s good..." Shen Xinghui murmured, his voice shaking with relief.

"Thank you for worrying about me," Ignatius said, his kind eyes locking onto Shen Xinghui’s.

Then, he leaned in and pressed a tender kiss to Shen Xinghui’s lips.

Shen Xinghui froze, startled.

Yet, to his surprise, he didn’t feel uncomfortable.

It wasn’t unpleasant.

Despite his earlier fears and assumptions, he found himself accepting the moment, even welcoming it.

But then Ignatius abruptly pulled back, his face flushed. "I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have—"

Shen Xinghui looked up at him, unable to hold back a laugh.

"It’s fine," he said, his amusement bubbling over.

Glancing past Ignatius, Shen Xinghui noticed the massive monster that was lying lifeless on the ground.

"So, monsters really do appear here," he remarked, his voice laced with awe.

Realization seemed to dawn on Ignatius.

Snapping his fingers, he caused the monstrous wolf’s body to crumble into fine gray ash, which dissipated into the wind.

"Wait, what?!" Shen Xinghui exclaimed in shock.

"If I left it there, the smell of blood might attract other monsters," Ignatius explained. "But using fire too close to camp would be dangerous, so I turned it to ash."

"You can do even that...?" Shen Xinghui muttered, astonished.

Magic truly was incredible.

Clarion, seemingly unbothered now, lay back down, resuming its rest.

Shen Xinghui and Ignatius returned to the tent and the rest of the night passed peacefully.

By morning, all was calm once more.

...

In the midday the following day, Shen Xinghui and Ignatius arrived in town.

After leaving Clarion at the stables, they made their way to the main street, where Shen Xinghui was immediately struck by the unusual liveliness of the scene.

"There’s a lot of people here. Is there some kind of festival going on?" he asked, looking around in amazement.

The town wasn’t particularly large, yet the streets were packed with people.

Shen Xinghui glanced up at Ignatius, who also seemed perplexed, and tilted his head thoughtfully.

"No, there shouldn’t be. Something must have happened," Ignatius remarked.
