Chapter 102: Side Story: The Happiest Maid In The World (Part 2)

At first, the baby simply gazed up at her, smiling, his tiny fingers wrapped around hers.

But within fifteen minutes, his eyelids began to droop.

The soothing motion of the cradle soon lulled him into a peaceful slumber.

"Babies really do sleep a lot, don’t they?"Shen Xinghui murmured.

"They do indeed," Layla agreed.

With a mischievous glint in his eye, Shen Xinghui lightly poked Kaelion’s soft cheek with his fingertip.

She chuckled to herself, clearly enjoying the moment.

"I thought they’d need more playtime," he mused.

"As he grows a little older, that will become more necessary," Layla reassured him.

"He’s a boy, after all. I wonder what kind of games we’ll play together."

Of course, at this stage, "play" would be simple activities—tummy time to strengthen his neck, rolling practice, or little exercises to help him push himself up with his arms.

"When he gets even bigger... maybe we can run around together, or play hide and seek," Shen Xinghui said wistfully.

"Certainly," Layla replied with a nod.

That would still be quite some time from now, though.

"The weather is quite warm today," Layla continued. "Why not take Kaelion for a walk in the garden? I believe Master Ignatius’s schedule is free this afternoon."

"Really?"

At that, Shen Xinghui’s face instantly brightened, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

Master Ignatius, who had spent much of his life as an adventurer, had recently set aside his profession—at least for the time being—to focus on his royal duties.

He had reassured everyone that he could return to adventuring whenever he wished, but for now, he was committed to state affairs.

Given his background, he was highly skilled in negotiations and diplomatic matters, making him an invaluable asset in handling international relations.

His Majesty, the King, had been delighted to have such a capable person take on the role.

However, while this newfound responsibility suited him well, it had created a certain loneliness for Shen Xinghui.

They had spent so much time traveling together, constantly at each other’s side, and now things were different.

He never complained, nor did he show his feelings openly, but there were moments—just fleeting ones—where a shadow of loneliness crossed his expression.

He was being so admirable, holding back his desires.

Newlyweds should be able to be more selfish, to demand more time together.

And yet, he simply smiled and endured.

No, that wouldn’t do.

If no one else would make time for them, then he would.

"...Are you sure it wouldn’t be a bother?" Shen Xinghui asked hesitantly.

"It wouldn’t be a bother at all. I’m sure Master Ignatius would want the same."

In fact, according to his attendants, Master Ignatius often grumbled about wanting to prioritize his time with Shen Xinghui over his work.

And so, when the request was relayed to him, he agreed without hesitation.

The joy on Shen Xinghui’s face was a sight to behold.

The afternoon was peaceful, with warm sunlight gently spilling over the garden.

A soft rug was spread out on the grass, where Kaelion rested in the maid’s care while Shen Xinghui and Ignatius strolled together through the garden.

Still, they never wandered too far.

Hand in hand with Ignatius, Shen Xinghui’s cheeks were slightly flushed, but his smile radiated happiness as he admired the flowers.

Ignatius, in turn, watched over him with a warm and loving gaze.

The sight of them together was nothing short of ideal—a picture of a truly blissful couple.

From the shade of a nearby tree, the maid happened to catch a glimpse of them sharing a secret kiss.

The keen eyesight of the Dragon Man did not miss such things.

But she said nothing.

Ignatius likely knew she had seen, yet he also knew she would never speak of it.

He was a master who trusted his staff, and that alone made him all the more admirable.

"Ms. Layla!"

"Master Xinghui, please, just call me Layla."

Shen Xinghui returned from his stroll at a slight jog, his expression flustered.

The maid gave a knowing smile.

Shen Xinghui was still unaccustomed to having servants and tended to address the staff with formalities.

But there was a necessary distinction between master and staff, and names were the first step.

"...Layla," Shen Xinghui murmured hesitantly.

"Yes, Master Xinghui," Layla replied, smiling reassuringly.

Behind her, Ignatius followed at a relaxed pace, chuckling softly at their exchange.

"I’d like to take Kaelion over to where the flowers are," Shen Xinghui said. "They’re so beautiful, and the scent is wonderful."

"That sounds lovely. I’ll carry him, so you and Master Ignatius can walk together."

"Oh—ah, alright."

Layla rose to her feet, carefully cradling Kaelion in her arms.

He had been staying awake longer these days, and now he seemed to be enjoying the fresh air, the scents of the garden, and the gentle sunlight.

With Shen Xinghui and Ignatius leading the way, Layla followed closely behind, guiding them toward the flower garden.

The space was vibrant with seasonal blossoms in full bloom.

There, Layla gently passed Kaelion back to Shen Xinghui and stepped away to observe.

Ignatius reached out tentatively, brushing his fingers over Kaelion’s soft cheeks and tiny hands before stroking his fine hair, his expression full of tenderness.

Shen Xinghui looked up at him, her gaze equally filled with love.

Be knelt down, bringing Kaelion closer to the flowers, letting him take in their fragrance.

It was a heartwarming sight.

When Ignatius reached for one of the blossoms, Shen Xinghui quickly stopped him.

Even from a short distance away, it was clear he had gently refused to let him pluck it.

The afternoon passed leisurely as the family enjoyed their time together.

Eventually, Kaelion dozed off in Shen Xinghui’s arms, lulled by the warmth and peaceful atmosphere.

After dinner and a warm bath, Shen Xinghui completed Kaelion’s final feeding for the night.

This was followed by the usual evening health check conducted by the midwife.

During that time, Layla accompanied Shen Xinghui to his private chambers, discussing the necessary preparations for the next day—what he might need, the time he wished to wake up, and Ignatius’s schedule.

"I’ll come to wake you at the usual time tomorrow," Layla said.

"Alright. Thank you, Layla."

"You’re too kind, my Master."

Shen Xinghui always smiled warmly at the staff, never failing to express his gratitude.

To those who served him, he was nothing short of an angel.

It was their joy and privilege to protect and support him in return.

As they idly chatted, Ignatius returned.

Layla bowed her head and excused herself.

But as she glanced back before leaving, she caught a glimpse of Shen Xinghui wrapping his arms around Ignatius’s neck as he leaned down to kiss him tenderly.

Shen Xinghui always greeted his husband this way every night.

That joyful expression—the happiest he looked all day—was a sight Layla cherished.

Of course, Shen Xinghui had no idea.

But for Layla, this home was a haven of warmth and love.

To be able to witness such moments, to be part of this blissful household, made her the happiest maid in the world.
