Chapter 101: Side Story: The Happiest Maid In The World (Part 1)

My name is Layla, and I have been assigned as the caretaker of Master Kaelion.

Long ago, my master, Master Ignatius, took a wife, and before I knew it, they were expecting a child.

After some discussion, it was decided that, as a long-serving attendant, I would be responsible for supporting the Master of the house and caring for the newborn.

My new mistress, Master Xinghui, is truly a lovely person.

Although a man, he is so slender and delicate that he appears even more fragile than I do.

I had heard that people from another worlds tend to be physically weaker than the humans of our world, and it seems that is indeed the case.

However, that only applies to physical strength—his inner strength is remarkable.

When Master Ignatius returned home injured, he was unwell himself, yet he worried for him ceaselessly and endured his own pain in silence.

It was a touching sight.

That is why, when he suddenly disappeared, I was deeply concerned.

I knew there was no one in this household dishonorable enough to lay a hand on a guest of my master, so it was clear that Master Xinghui had left of his own will.

She had been deeply troubled, and I had feared for his well-being.

I also witnessed my normally calm and composed master frantically searching for him, disregarding his own health as he spent sleepless nights scouring the land with his own hands.

Never before had I seen Master Ignatius so desperate.

It was through his exhaustion and distress that we in the household came to truly understand just how precious Master Xinghui was to him.

And then, finally, the child was born.

A human man giving birth to a Dragon Man’s child was an achievement in itself, yet he not only succeeded but was conscious and able to nurse the baby immediately.

He truly is a strong man.

When we dressed the newborn and took him to meet Master Ignatius, His Majesty the King, and Her Majesty the Queen, the very first thing Master Ignatius did was ask about Master Xinghui’s condition.

When he learned that he had been treated, was awake, and was in good health, he simply collapsed to the floor, sobbing in relief.

It was another sight I had never seen before.

The child, a baby boy, was named Kaelion.

It has been two weeks since his birth, and he is growing healthily and strong.

At this stage, an infant requires feeding every three hours, even through the night.

However, Master Xinghui needs his rest, and since he has no prior experience with such matters, we decided that I would take care of Master Kaelion during the night.

Fortunately, we have a substitute milk formula, so there is no issue.

That said, mother’s milk is still the best in the morning, as it provides nourishment that cannot be replicated by substitutes.

And so, my first duty each day is to wake Master Xinghui.

"Ignatius... um, soon, Layla will... mmh... ah... no more, I can’t—!"

Even if I hear such alluring sounds from beyond the door first thing in the morning, I must remain calm.

Internally, however, I am cheering, Well done, Master Ignatius!

"Haa... ah... aah...!"

Still, what exactly are they doing to produce such enticing sounds this early in the day?

It is a shame that I cannot hear Master Ignatius’s voice as well—no, no, I mean nothing.

Of course, I would never be so improper as to open the door, but the thought of taking just one peek does cross my mind.

In any case, what a feast for the ears this morning.

After waiting about ten more minutes for the situation inside to settle down, I finally knocked on the door.

"Hya—! Y-Yes?!"

Ah, he still sounds flustered.

"Master Xinghui, are you awake?"

"I-I’ll be right there!"

Of course, she does not open the door.

There are surely many things she wishes to keep hidden.

Maintaining my master’s privacy is also an important part of my duty.

Naturally, I will never breathe a word of what I just overheard.

Before long, Master Xinghui emerged, dressed properly and with a faint blush dusting her cheeks.

He offered me a gentle smile.

"Sorry to keep you waiting."

"Not at all, my Master. I have only just arrived."

"I-I see..."

She would never speak the truth about such matters—his mistress was far too shy for that.

Regardless, she accompanied Master Xinghui to the nursery, where little Kaelion awaited.

As they entered, the midwife was already holding the child, carefully checking his condition as she did three times a day.

"Oh, good morning, Master Xinghui. Time for feeding, is it?"

"Yes, midwife," Shen Xinghui replied.

He then settled into a comfortable chair and loosened the front of his clothing, revealing skin as pale and delicate as whitefish.

For now, his chest was just a little fuller—a fleeting change that would last only for the first month after childbirth, making it something of a rare sight.

As Kaelion was placed in Shen Xinghui’s arms, he eagerly latched on, signaling the start of his meal.

Though she had been awkward at first, Shen Xinghui had quickly grown accustomed to the routine, handling it all with practiced ease.

Among the Dragon Man, even women of their own race varied greatly in whether they could produce sufficient milk.

Yet Shen Xinghui had no such trouble—both the quantity and quality were ideal. Kaelion never cried out of hunger.

Though he had been born on the smaller side for a Dragon Man, he was already growing strong and healthy.

"And how about you, Master Xinghui? Have you noticed any changes in your health?" the elderly nurse inquired.

"I’m fine, midwife. What about Kaelion? Is he doing well?"

"Of course! He is thriving, healthy as can be."

Hearing that, Shen Xinghui smiled, her expression as gentle as a mother’s embrace.

He looked almost saintly in that moment.

When the feeding ended, he laid Kaelion in his cradle.
