"What’s taking so long?" Natasha asked Wong who was trying to open a portal. They are now hiding deep in the mountain as Asgardian soldiers search every corner of this realm for them.
"Something is wrong," Wong answered. "The space is locked."
"What?"
"Someone has already blocked the space in Asgard, meaning even regular teleportation spells are hard to cast," Wong explained.
"Can’t you do something?" Natasha asked as she looked at the passed-out Hulk and Sam. Their mission cannot be considered a success if they are stuck on another planet or realm and cannot return to their timeline.
"I’m afraid it’s useless," Tony answered. "It seems Odin has conquered the Nine Realms and linked them together with Asgard as the center."
"What does that mean?"
"It means that trying to open a portal to Earth or even another timeline would be like facing the power of nine dimensions," Wong explained.
"We didn’t have any issue teleporting on Earth, right? What changed?" Natasha asked.
"I don’t know, but the most likely explanation is the power involved needs to be activated, and when we intruded into this dimension, someone wanted to prevent our escape," Tony added.
Natasha grunted: "I’m used to missions not going according to plan, but this is something else entirely." There is no such thing as a perfect plan — that’s one of the first lessons Natasha learned as a spy. Her training with Edward reinforced that idea because things related to magic are a thousand times more complicated.
"So, what do we do now?" Wong asked. "Do you think we should ask Clint for more support?"
"No need," Natasha denied. Clint must have his own job, so it was unwise to burden them with their task. "Whatever dimension blockade system that they have, the Asgardians must have their way of bypassing it when needed."
"Are you talking about the Rainbow Bridge?" Wong asked.
"We should be able to escape this blockade if we can infiltrate the bridge and hijack it. The issue is its location and how to use it."
"I’ve been to Asgard and know the location. Well, assuming it’s not too different from our timeline," Wong said.
"I studied Asgardian Magic. I can use it," Tony added.
"No assumption?" Natasha looked at Tony.
"As long as the base magic is Asgardian, it won’t matter if they add other things to it," he replied confidently.
"That’s good to hear," Natasha nodded. "In that case, I’ll do a little recon in the nearest village to gather intel. Tell me where the central hub of the Rainbow Bridge is to verify if it is still in the same place as our timeline."
"No problem," Wong nodded before transmitting the information directly into her mind. "Do you need one of us to accompany you?"
"No, it would be best if I went alone," Natasha replied before entering her shadow and disappearing. Wong patiently waited while Tony took this opportunity to repair the damage to his suit. He also placed security around this temporary hideout in case something went wrong.
Natasha returned about ten minutes later. "What did you find out?" Wong immediately asked.
"The good news is the location is the same," Natasha revealed.
"And the bad?"
"The Odin of this timeline was tempted by Dormammu and the power of the Dark Dimension when he was close to death. The All-Father tricked the Demon God, imprisoned him, and took his power, meaning the Rainbow Bridge has now utilized the power of the Dark Dimension. Will that be an issue for our escape?"
"It should not be an issue," Tony said. Edward taught him all kinds of science, technology, and magic, including interdimensional entities or spaces like the Dark Dimension.
"I can also help," Wong added. Dormammu has been Kamar-Taj’s primary enemy for centuries. Previously, the Ancient One forbade any knowledge about the dark dimension, but Edward changed the rules, allowing Wong to better understand their eternal enemy.
"Alright, let’s move quickly then," Natasha said. Although they had already run away from the demon, she did not believe it was impossible for the latter to find them. Natasha used her Metamorphmagus abilities to change Tony and Wong into Asgardian soldiers, while putting Sam and Banner into their pocket dimension to rest.
Natasha took the team as close as possible to the central area of the bridge with her shadow abilities, only stopping once they reached an area with extreme means of magical or energy detection. Then, they took their roles as Asgardian soldiers and walked through the facilities. A few people suspected them, but with Natasha’s Charm Magic, they were easily controlled, granting the team the access they needed.
"This feels too easy," Wong said as they headed to the last door needed to reach the control area.
"I agree," Natasha said, observing everywhere for any signs of trouble. Tony, have your scanners detected anything?"
"No," Tony said with a frown.
"We can’t stop, so let’s prepare for the worst," Natasha said as they reached the last door. She felt she had overlooked something, but could not think of what. Natasha placed her right palm on the door and recited an incantation. The door opened, and they walked in. Then, everybody stopped. The door suddenly shut behind them, locking the area.
"It’s you guys? Is my memory playing tricks on me, or did I not personally kill most of you during the conquest of Midgard?"
"Thor," Natasha said as he looked at the handsome man dressed in all black, with a scar on his right eye and an eye patch. She realized the thing she overlooked was Heimdal. With his Clairvoyant Eyes, he would have been able to spot them the moment they landed.
"Natasha," Thor said. "I still remember your screams when I electrocuted you."
"What’s with the dark ambience? Are you now into emo fashion?" Tony asked.
"Oh, Tony, how I miss your sarcasm," Thor sighed. "The last time I saw you, your armor and head were indistinguishable after I smashed your skull."
"Is this guy really Thor?" Wong muttered. He has met the Asgardian Prince, and the latter was a joyous, if not boisterous, young man full of the vigor of a young man. The Thor before him was unlike theirs.
"I don’t think I know you," Thor said as he glanced at Wong. "From your outfit, you must be one of the Sorcerers from Midgard. The demons wanted to eliminate you guys, so I never had the chance."
Thor looked around. "Is it only the three of you? Is Banner not with you? A demon killed him during the conquest, and I never had the chance to prove I was the strongest Avenger. I thought this was my chance."
"We are not the Avengers that you knew. We can take you down even without Banner’s help," Natasha said as she secretly communicated with the team through their mind.
"Can you read his energy signature?" she asked.
"No."
"My scanners said he is using some kind of protection."
"Interesting," Thor said before raising his hand. Mjolnir did not fly into his hand, but materialized out of thin air. Additionally, the weapon was not Mjolnir, but a black axe with red runes engraved on the side and hilt.
"I am Thor Odinson, God of Thunder, Fear, and Killing. Face my wrath," he yelled before jumping more than ten meters into the air and slamming his ax at Natasha. His actions showed that he would show no mercy to his former team members.
