Chapter 50: Housewives’ Club

Chapter 50: Housewives’ Club

Charlotte Mattau, Zack’s mother, was a beautiful woman who appeared to be in her thirties. She was wearing a white nightgown with a deep neckline that did little to hide her full, round breasts. Furthermore, through the thin fabric, it was impossible not to notice her hard nipples.

Since it would have been rude to keep staring at her huge chest, I quickly looked up, meeting her beautiful face instead. Her brown hair was lovely, and her blue eyes and warm smile gave her an incredibly kind appearance. As much as she had the same eyes as her son, they seemed like different people.

"Yes, ummm... I’m a colleague of Seraphina’s..." I said, lacking much confidence in my response. After all, it was difficult to define my relationship with that woman. I also didn’t want to admit that I was, in fact, something akin to an employee of hers.

"I got it..." she smiled happily. Then we talked a little, as she explained she was organizing a small tea party within the neighborhood and wanted to invite the icy princes.

She went on at length to explain her duties. The short version was: she was the president of the condominium’s housewives’ club. Obviously, that wasn’t its real name, but that was basically it.

In the club, the residents of the condominium, gossiped with each other and organized get-togethers. As you may expect, generally, only unemployed housewives had the time and interest to attend to such activities.

After listening to her story, I introduced myself. We exchanged cell phone numbers, as I said she could call me anytime. Finally, I offered to send any message she might need to Seraphina. She thanked me and mentioned that she could never seem to find the girl in the neighborhood but wanted to at least invite her to one of the upcoming gatherings.

I assured her that I would pass along the message and exchanged some casual conversation with her, but soon said my goodbyes.

Honestly, I had little interest in the social circle of idle women, but getting closer to her could prove useful in the future. At the same time, I didn’t plan to make any move soon. If possible, I would want to keep myself far away from Zack.

Finally, I stepped into the house. The place was quiet, with almost everything turned off, likely because the lady of the house hadn’t returned yet. Probably still stuck at work at this hour. As I glanced around, my eyes landed on a little boy with light brown hair, sprawled out on the sofa.

I gave a slight smile. He had probably tried to stay awake to wait for his aunt to come home but had, in the end, fallen asleep on the sofa.

"Hey hey, wake up, you’re going to catch a cold if you sleep on the couch without a blanket," I said gently, waking the boy.

He took a moment to open his eyes but finally smiled when he saw that I had arrived. Then, he asked about Seraphina, to which I had to give a negative answer.

Seeing the disappointment in his eyes, I rubbed his head affectionately to console him. I then tried to explain that Seraphina had been very busy but would love to give him more attention if she could.

"Did you eat dinner?" I asked.

"Yeah, I managed to make my own dinner today!" The boy puffed out his chest with pride. I praised him even more for it. The best part was not just that he had cooked for himself but that he had also done the dishes afterward.

I chatted a bit more with the boy, but soon he was yawning and falling asleep again. I offered to carry him to his bed, and after some hesitation, he accepted. I think he still wanted to try and wait for his aunt.

I laid him in his bed, covered him up, and tidied up his slightly messy room. As I stepped out of the room, I was startled to see a girl standing there, her eyes fixed on me with a faint happy smile.

"It seems like he’s gotten attached to you," she said as she approached her sleeping nephew and kissed his forehead. "Thank you for always taking such good care of him."

It was rare to see that woman smiling, and even rarer was seeing her be kind, so I was a little surprised, but I quickly regained my composure.

"You can always count on me for these things. But I think you should pay a little more attention to the boy. He misses you a lot, you know?"

She let out a deep sigh, leaning back against the wall. "I know, but it’s not that simple. Honestly, I don’t even know if I’m capable of..." For a moment, I thought she might open up to me, but she stopped mid-sentence and changed the topic. "Did you just tidy up the house?"

"Not yet, I just got here a little while ago," I admitted.

"I understand. You don’t need to worry about it. You look like you haven’t rested in days, so go ahead and get some rest."

I was surprised to see Seraphina so kind. She was more pleasant than usual that day. I wondered if this might be my chance to get closer to her, but as soon as I tried to bring up a subject of conversation, I was quickly shut down. She wasn’t an easy person by any means; she always seemed to have her guard up against everything and everyone.

"Thursday will be a holiday, and besides that, there’s nothing else I need you to do," she said abruptly. "You can take a few days off. The store will only officially open on Monday anyway, so go ahead and rest. If you want, you can sleep here, or you can visit your girlfriend, she must be missing you."

After dismissing me, she went to bed without giving me the chance to say anything. Well, I wasn’t going to complain; I had finally earned a small break. To be honest, my eyes could barely stay open.

While thinking about what I would do during my time off, I heard my phone ringing. It was Lucia. I felt a twinge of unease, fearing that my rest would be quickly interrupted by more problems. I picked up the phone with a trembling hand and answered.

"Hello?" My voice sounded hoarse and tired.

"You sound tired, are you okay?" Her voice was soft and soothing, almost like a cool breeze on a hot day. That woman knew how to use her voice to manipulate people.

"The last few days have been a bit exhausting," I admitted.

"I figured, but don’t worry, I’m not bringing more problems with me. Lila should have already told you, but I’ve already spoken to them. The day after tomorrow, we’ll corner the first target."

I felt a slight relief knowing that things were progressing well. The redhead laughed softly, noticing my relief, and then mentioned that she was parked in front of Seraphina’s house. I was surprised by this.

"Why?" The only thing that slipped from my lips was that question.

"Isn’t it obvious? For my plan to succeed, I need you fully invested. So use tomorrow to rest; I’ve asked the girls to take care of you. Now I’m going to give you a ride."

Many questions remained unanswered. How did she get into the gated community? How did she know that Seraphina would give me time off? But, knowing that woman, I knew that she wouldn’t answer my questions.

Besides, I really wanted to see the girls again. So I let the questions fade from my mind.

I stepped outside, and there was my ride waiting for me. It was truly impressive. She smiled at me and gestured for me to get in the car.

"There’s just one thing I need from you," she said. "You know that competent reporter who tried to spy on me?" I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized that she had already seen through all my plans. "Could you lend her to me? I think her skills could be very beneficial, and it would also be advantageous for Helena."

"Do I have a choice?"

"Of course not," she answered with a chilling smile.

In the end, I gave Clara’s contact information to her, and Lucia said she would explain the details later. I didn’t want to involve the girl too much in all of this, but it seemed inevitable.

Finally, I was home. I was greeted by all the girls and exchanged a few words with them, but I was so tired that I ended up just falling asleep.

The last thing I heard before drifting off was Lilith telling the others to get ready, as they had some kind of surprise planned for me the next day. I didn’t worry much about it and let sleep finally take over my body.
