Chapter 399: Slapping the Face So Swiftly

Chapter 399: Chapter 399: Slapping the Face So Swiftly

Luke Bell put on the watch gifted by Lyra Gunn with visible joy. "Grandmother, this watch is so cool, I really like it."

Lyra Gunn’s expression softened with kindness. She smiled warmly, "As long as you like it, Luke."

Celeste Lewis also wore a smile, knowing the watch her son received was incredibly expensive.

She deliberately remarked, "Aunt, Luke is still in school. He shouldn’t be wearing something so pricey. His father wouldn’t approve of indulgence during his studies."

Maxwell Bell didn’t want Luke Bell developing spendthrift habits or becoming overly fond of luxury and leisure at an early age.

Lyra Gunn feigned irritation, glaring slightly. "I just gave one watch to Luke. If Maxwell dares to get upset, let him come and talk to me."

Hearing his grandmother’s words, Luke Bell shot a triumphant look at his mother, Celeste Lewis, feeling exceedingly happy.

"Grandmother, my dad listens to you the most."

Celeste Lewis, seeing her son’s defiance, could only offer a helpless smile. "Then you’d better take good care of your grandmother’s watch."

Luke Bell straightened up instantly, raising his hand with a solemn promise, "Mom, don’t worry. I will definitely take good care of this watch!"

Lyra Gunn couldn’t help but chuckle at her grandson’s serious demeanor. With a wrinkled, loving hand, she gently patted his head. "Good boy."

She had watched Luke grow up and knew his character was commendable. Maxwell, too, had been raised by her; it wasn’t possible for him to treat her well solely for the sake of company shares.

Clearly, it was Celeste Lewis who was full of schemes!

After her death, everything under her name would go to Maxwell. How could Celeste still be playing tricks with her!

"Celeste, I also bought a ladies’ watch for you." Lyra Gunn opened the drawer, retrieved a box, and handed it to Celeste Lewis.

Celeste Lewis wasn’t particularly fond of wearing watches.

Nonetheless, she accepted the box with a cheerful smile, "Thank you, Aunt, you really spoil us."

Lyra Gunn smiled meaningfully, "If I don’t spoil you, who else would I spoil?"

She urged Celeste Lewis to open the box and wear the watch immediately.

Celeste Lewis nodded; fine, she’d wear it. She planned to put the watch away once she left the hospital room.

Upon opening the box, however, she saw a diamond-studded watch—it was quite beautiful.

She put the watch on. "Aunt, you truly have exquisite taste. It looks stunning."

Both of these watches had been purchased at hefty prices by Lyra Gunn.

"As long as you like them," Lyra Gunn sighed. "All along, while I’ve been ill and hospitalized, you’ve cared about me. Buying gifts for you all makes me happy as well."

Celeste Lewis smiled. "Aunt, what are you talking about? You’re family to us; of course, we care about you."

Lyra Gunn’s smile deepened. "Celeste, with my health like this, I probably don’t have much time left. I’m planning to invite a lawyer over once I’m feeling better. I want to transfer my remaining shares to you all."

Hearing this, Celeste Lewis’s eyes flashed with excitement.

But she quickly managed her emotions, presenting a grateful expression and a softer tone. "Aunt, you mustn’t talk like that. You’ll live a long and healthy life. What we hope for most is your wellness and longevity. As for the shares, there’s no rush—once you recover, you can arrange things however you wish."

Victory was already within Celeste Lewis’s grasp.

Luke Bell chimed in, coaxing sweetly, "Grandmother, you’ll definitely live to be a hundred years old."

Lyra Gunn chuckled lightly. "Alright, a hundred years old."

After Celeste Lewis and her son left the room, Lyra Gunn’s kind and benevolent expression instantly disappeared.

She opened the drawer, took out another phone, and began eavesdropping on Celeste Lewis and her son.

*

Celeste Lewis and Luke Bell got into the car.

Luke Bell touched his watch and pouted, complaining, "Mom, I’m not coming to the hospital next week; coming here every week is such a hassle. I can’t even go dancing with my classmates."

Back in the hospital room, Lyra Gunn’s hand gripped her phone tightly as she listened in.

Hearing Luke’s blunt comment, her heart sank entirely.

Luke found visiting her a bother...

What a slap in the face.

She had thought Luke Bell’s character was good not too long ago.

On the other end of the listening device, Celeste Lewis sighed helplessly at her son’s complaint. "If you truly don’t want to come every week, let’s change it to once a month. Tonight, I’ll talk to your dad and say you’re busy with school."

Luke Bell giggled. "Mom, you’re really the best."

Luke’s grumbles and Celeste’s placating words felt like sharp knives stabbing into Lyra Gunn’s heart.

Her hand trembled slightly as she tightly held the phone.

She had always treated Luke like her own grandson and doted on him!

Celeste Lewis’s car drove for about half an hour before reaching home.

Once mother and son arrived home, they each went off to do their own activities.

Celeste Lewis returned to her bedroom, and the first thing she did was call her mother.

Once the line connected...

Celeste Lewis spoke with an air of triumph, "Mom, the old crone brought up hiring a lawyer today to transfer her remaining shares to us!"

Her mother perked up at the news.

"She really said that?"

Her mother was genuinely thrilled for her daughter.

"She did. Her health is deteriorating rapidly; she probably doesn’t have much time left. As soon as we secure the shares, everything else will fall into place."

Her mother, gratified, advised, "During this period, you need to carefully monitor her emotions. Don’t let her feel dissatisfied in any way; once she hands over those shares, everything will be set."

Celeste Lewis sincerely thanked her mother. If it weren’t for her mom’s scheming, she wouldn’t have become the lady of the Bell Group.

"Mom, you’re truly amazing!"

Meanwhile, on the other end of her hidden listening device, Lyra Gunn not only heard Celeste Lewis’s phone conversation but also recorded every word.

She swore she wouldn’t let Celeste Lewis succeed!

Dale Land and Carson Dunn were on their way to a business banquet when she received a call from Tyler Hughes.

"Dale, Madam Bell came by the office looking for you again. I told her you weren’t in, and she’s left now."

"Alright, Uncle Tyler, thank you."

After hanging up, Dale Land’s heart sank slightly. It seemed Madam Bell genuinely had urgent business with her mom; otherwise, she wouldn’t have visited the company twice.

Carson Dunn turned to look at Dale Land. "What’s wrong?"

The two were already planning their wedding, so there were some non-secret things that didn’t need to remain hidden.

After some thought, Dale Land decided to mention the Bell Family. "You should know about the Bell Group in Capital City, right?"

Carson Dunn replied, "Yes."

"The current head of Bell Group, Maxwell Bell, is my mom’s biological cousin. Back then, my mom gave up her shares in the Bell Group, leaving all of them to Madam Bell—her own mother."

Carson Dunn was clearly surprised. Few people would willingly give up shares that were within their reach.

"I understand it’s surprising. We’ve been estranged from the Bell Family for over a decade now. Yesterday, Madam Bell suddenly visited my mom at the company, and she came again today."

Carson Dunn contemplated briefly. "You should probably discuss this with your mother."

Dale Land nodded. "I know; I’ll bring it up when I get home tonight."

"Is there something on my face?" She noticed him staring at her, her cheeks involuntarily flushing.

Carson Dunn reached out to pinch Dale Land’s cheek, frowning slightly. "Dale, have you been working too hard lately? Your face looks a bit thinner."

His worried tone contrasted sharply with Dale Land’s jubilant response.

"Really? Has my face truly slimmed down?"

Dale Land was elated, practically bursting with energy. She rummaged through her purse for a mirror.

She had looked in the mirror earlier that morning, and her face hadn’t seemed thinner!

After inspecting her reflection, turning left and right, "......"

It hadn’t slimmed down. It was just the makeup effect.
