Chapter 316: Chapter 316: Eyes Only for the Porridge on the Ground
Sophie Woods spent the last two days sitting on the chairs outside the hospital entrance whenever she was free.
Her gaze was fixed on the cars coming and going.
Deep down, she still harbored a faint hope that she would see James Thompson again.
Grandpa Shaw’s brain surgery was very successful, but she had work to return to and couldn’t take much more leave; she would have to go back to Inkwell City in two days.
A black sedan stopped at the hospital entrance.
Sophie’s heart rate quickened; her eyes locked onto the car with anticipation.
However, when the car door opened and an middle-aged man stepped out, her hopes were shattered in an instant.
Disappointed, she withdrew her gaze.
"He’s not coming," she muttered to herself in despondency.
Elizabeth Shaw came out looking for Sophie and saw her friend’s spiritless state; walking over with concern, she sat down, "Sophie, you’ve been off these past couple of days."
It was only because Grandpa’s condition was stable that Elizabeth had time to talk to Sophie.
Sophie looked down at the ground, thought for a moment, and then asked, "Elizabeth, I’ve fallen for a man."
Curiosity laced Elizabeth’s voice, "Who? Do I know him?"
Sophie nodded, "You know him. There’s something I want to ask you... I... I’m thinking about confessing to him, what do you think?"
Upon hearing Sophie’s words, Elizabeth was curious; could it be a male colleague from the company?
In Elizabeth’s mind, Sophie had always been cheerful and carefree, it was rare to see her so burdened.
Elizabeth looked at Sophie and asked seriously, "First tell me, who is this guy?"
Sophie hesitated for a moment but finally resolved to speak up, "It’s Mr. Thompson."
Elizabeth’s eyes widened in surprise; she didn’t expect Sophie’s affections were aimed at James Thompson and blurted out without thinking, "That won’t do."
Sophie lowered her head, her cheeks flushing slightly, and she felt somewhat embarrassed, "Why not? The boss is single now. Are you taking her side just because Director Land helped you before? But they are clearly divorced... after divorce, they’re both free."
Elizabeth didn’t know how to counter her friend’s argument.
She gently advised, "Sophie, I think Mr. Thompson still... still has feelings for Director Land, and if you really confess, it might be embarrassing for you."
Sophie lifted her head, "I just want to try. If the confession fails, at least I won’t have any regrets."
The two sat in silence for a while, as a veil of silence enveloped the air.
Elizabeth was dealing with a mix of emotions; she said softly, "Sophie, please think it over carefully, I really don’t think the boss is right for you."
Sophie smiled helplessly, "Elizabeth, I know you mean well, but I still want to confess. Can you help me?"
Elizabeth, "What can I do to help?"
Sophie didn’t beat around the bush, instead, she said, "Can you talk to Assistant Winters for me? I’d like to meet with Mr. Thompson in person."
Elizabeth pressed her lips together; she didn’t want to do this favor, thinking that by helping Sophie, she would feel like she was betraying Director Land.
Now she was torn between her friend and Julia Land.
Elizabeth’s hesitation deeply disappointed Sophie.
Sophie, feeling both downcast and let down, said, "Elizabeth, you can’t even help me with this little thing? I just want to see Mr. Thompson in person and say a few words."
Elizabeth looked at her friend’s disappointed face and felt torn inside.
Sophie chuckled without hope, "Never mind, if you don’t want to help, that’s fine."
She just wanted to see Mr. Thompson and speak a few words, yet her friend wouldn’t help because of Director Land.
This made Sophie feel like she was less important to Elizabeth than Director Land.
"By the way, I’ve decided to go back to Inkwell City for work the day after tomorrow," said Sophie.
"Okay, that’s fine," replied Elizabeth.
Once inseparable friends, a crack seemed to have formed in their relationship at that moment.
Sophie left the hospital and returned to her hotel.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth entered the hospital ward and took out her phone, bringing up Jasper Winters’ number.
Her finger hovered over the number.
Ultimately, she did not call Jasper Winters.

Meanwhile, in Basket Village.
Hazel Fields entered the storeroom with a bowl of meat porridge and placed it on the ground.
"Ugly girl, get up and eat," she said coldly, her voice devoid of warmth.
The Munday Family, after Dale Land’s recent fever scare, probably realized they could not let Dale die.
Hazel decided that once Dale got better, she would feed her three meals a day.
However, she planned that once Dale recovered, she would still have her work, as household chores needed to be done by someone.
After all, just housework; it wouldn’t kill her.
Dale Land curled up on the mat, quiet as a little kitten.
She smelled the fragrance of the meat porridge, and her stomach made a weak rumble.
She slowly got up.
With powerless hands, Dale held the bowl, which almost slipped away.
She had no choice but to put the bowl back on the ground and scoop the porridge with a small spoon, one bite at a time.
"Remember to wash the bowl after you eat," Hazel said, seeing that she could eat by herself; she then turned and left the storeroom.
Dale licked the spoon. She seemed not to hear Hazel’s words, her eyes only on the porridge on the ground.
The room fell into silence once again, with only the slight sounds of Dale eating porridge.
Until she grew up.
Her room was always the tiny storeroom.
The outside sunlight streamed through the small window, falling on her little body; an inconspicuous little girl, who would go unnoticed here.
