Chapter 289: Chapter 289: Mommy, I’m So Hungry

Leaving the police station in Fair Field Town, Julia Land and James Thompson headed to the street where Elizabeth Shaw’s grandfather had filmed.

They proceeded to inquire at the shops on both sides of the street.

James Thompson, who had brought people along, dispersed them to ask around.

"Hello, did you see this little girl in the video yesterday?" James Thompson asked, showing his phone to the shopkeeper.

"Never seen her," the shopkeeper shook his head.

"Thank you."

James Thompson pushed Julia Land’s wheelchair to another store.

The two continued to ask several shops.

Finally, at a small noodle shop, they got a bit of information.

Although there were no customers in the shop atm, the proprietress still spoke in a hushed voice, "This man brought the little girl here yesterday to eat noodles. She was obviously very hungry and directly used her hands to grab the noodles to eat."

At that time, she didn’t think much of it, assuming he was an uncaring father.

Looking at the well-dressed man and woman before her, she thought, could this child be trafficked?

Julia Land blinked her sore eyes.

Her daughter had used her hands to eat noodles.

Thinking of that scene pained her.

James Thompson gripped the wheelchair handles so tightly that his veins popped.

They had questioned half the day on the street and only got a little information from the noodle shop owner.

That evening, they stayed in a small hotel in Fair Field.

Julia Land discussed her daughter with James Thompson.

"Mr. Thompson, I suspect there was a submarine in the sea at that time," Julia suddenly said.

This could mean, Christopher Moore’s people were still around.

With a stern face, James Thompson pulled Julia into his embrace, "They might be fighting internally over the things Christopher Moore left behind."

And their daughter might just be the condition set by Christopher Moore.

Julia closed her eyes, took a deep breath, trying to calm her anxious heart.

When she opened her eyes again, they were filled with determination, "Tomorrow there will be good news, there must be."

James Thompson held her hand, brought her cool fingers to his lips and kissed them, "We will find our daughter."

Neither of them could sleep that night, lying awake.

The next day, with the help of several parties, they finally discovered the man dragging Dale had headed towards Dunmore City.

"Mr. Thompson, we have found a new clue," Officer Zhang showed James Thompson a video transferred from the Dunmore City police, "According to the surveillance footage, the man was last seen near this hostel in Dunmore City."

"Thank you, we’ll head there immediately."

James Thompson immediately called his subordinates in Dunmore City to start searching.

They quickly set off for the airport.

The sun in Dunmore City was blazing, and the temperature had soared to thirty-four degrees; it was easy to suffer heatstroke if one didn’t pay attention to sun protection and hydration.

Dale Land, with her cheeks sunburned, squatted outside the glass window of a dessert shop.

She looked through the clean, clear window.

Her eyes fixed on the people inside drinking beverages and eating, her throat swallowed in thirst and hunger.

Mommy, Dale is so hungry.

Her eyes reddened, wanting to cry, but she couldn’t cry; crying would get her beaten.

"Uncle, look at that little beggar outside, so disgusting," a little boy pointed at Dale outside the window, making a face in disgust.

Noah Quarter, sitting opposite him, lifted his head from the computer and followed the little boy’s finger.

His gaze lingered on Dale’s face for a while, then suddenly froze, his brow furrowing deeply.

His grandmother, Mrs. Tsai, had once sent him a photo of Julia Land’s daughter, and the little girl outside bore an extreme resemblance to the child in the photo.

Dale’s gaze was still fixed on the food inside the shop, completely unaware of Noah Quarter observing her.

Noah Quarter continued to observe and saw a muscular man standing beside a little girl, talking on the phone.

Once the man hung up, he grabbed Dale Land’s hand and left.

Dale meekly followed the man; she turned back to look at the store, her eyes revealing a trace of unease and fear.

Noah immediately stood up and said to the little boy, "Little James, sit here and don’t move."

As he quickly walked toward the door, he took out a few hundred-yuan bills from his wallet.

He stepped outside the store and chased after the man and the little girl, "Excuse me, sir, wait a moment!"

The man turned around, his expression showing impatience, "What is it?"

"Your money fell," Noah said, holding up the few hundred-yuan bills with a friendly smile on his face.

The man’s expression softened slightly, and he relaxed his vigilance, "Oh, thanks, but it’s not my money."

He bent down, picked up Dale, and left.

Dale looked at Noah with her bright, black eyes.

"Noah? What are you doing?" Emily Yeat got out of the car upon seeing Noah standing by the roadside and called out.

Noah put the money back in his wallet, turned to face Emily coming towards him, "I found some money, but no one claimed it."

He glanced again at the man who had put the little girl into a van and then looked away.

Emily approached him, a look of dissatisfaction on her face, "Do you know how embarrassed I was today? Everyone else’s husbands paid by card, while I had to use my own."

She had only just realized that love alone was not enough.

Noah was tired of hearing these complaints.

He tried to remain calm, "I’m sorry."

Emily had once liked Noah, but only after getting married did she realize the harsh reality that Noah could no longer afford a designer bag.

She rolled her eyes and walked towards the car, "Forget it. This is so pointless."

Noah pursed his lips thinly. He turned and went back inside the dessert shop to bring the little boy out—this boy was a relative from Emily’s side.

"Auntie, let me tell you, just now I saw a little beggar. She was drooling over my food, so disgusting, I instantly lost my appetite," the little boy cooed to Emily.

Emily gently tapped the boy on the head, "Oh, is that so, Little James? Are you still hungry? Auntie will take you to eat something else, okay?"

The little boy nodded happily, "Yes, Auntie, you’re the best!"

Noah did not join their conversation and had a cool expression on his face.

When the car reached a restaurant, Noah let Emily and the others go ahead, while he excused himself to make a call to a client.

He was now helping the Yeat Family with work, and they were quite wary of him, hence his job mainly involved handling business.

He said he had to call a client, and Emily did not doubt it.

Noah waited until Emily and the others entered the restaurant, then he walked to a deserted corner and took out his cell phone.

He had just entered a few numbers when he stopped.

Noah lowered his eyelids, thinking about his current wretched situation and Eliza Quarter’s incapacitated left leg.

Slowly, he put his phone back in his pocket.

James Thompson could be so capable. He could find his own daughter by himself.

With a cold face, Noah turned and walked into the restaurant.

The van drove out of the suburbs and stopped at a deserted factory in the outskirts, where a trailer was waiting.

The man, holding Dale, who had been injected with an anesthetic, walked into the trailer.

The light inside the trailer was dim, with the smell of disinfectant lingering.

The lights over the surgery table turned on.

"Such a pretty little girl, are you sure you want to work on her face?" Another man in the trailer put on gloves and arranged the surgical tools, his words questioning, yet his actions resolute.

"Cut the chatter." The man holding Dale spoke coldly as he placed her on the surgical table.

He just needed to raise her until she was eighteen to claim the boss’s inheritance; having her face altered would mean less hiding and could be considered a good thing for her.

He himself would get a slight facial adjustment too.

The glove-wearing man did not continue to persuade, his job was just to take the money and perform the surgery.
