Chapter 283: Can’t Figure It Out
Chapter 283: Chapter 283: Can’t Figure It Out
Sophia Hart had left, and Julia Land began dealing with official business. As she was halfway through, she furrowed her brows, pondering the motives of Mason Moore and his ilk.
She truly couldn’t comprehend it and looked up at James Thompson, "Mr. Thompson, why would the Moore Family want to sell their shares of the company?"
James Thompson’s gaze was cool. As long as it concerned the Moore Family, he felt like frowning. He said indifferently, "Regardless of why they are selling their stocks, you can buy them at the market price."
Julia Land nodded, "I’m thinking that too. After Sophia’s wedding is over, I’ll discuss it with them."
Seeing her continuously busy, James Thompson couldn’t help but remind her, "Why don’t you take a nap and rest for a while?"
Just as Julia Land nodded and was about to rest, a bodyguard knocked and came in, saying that Maxwell Bell and a Mrs. Gunn wished to see her.
Mrs. Gunn?
Julia Land instantly thought of Madame Bell’s maternal family, the Gunn Family.
"If you don’t want to see them, then don’t," James Thompson said.
"It’s alright; I’ll see them. I’ve never been one to shy away from trouble," Julia Land instructed the bodyguard to let them in.
Maxwell Bell walked into the hospital room, supporting Mrs. Gunn with a head full of white hair.
James Thompson pulled a chair over for Mrs. Gunn to sit.
Mrs. Gunn glanced at James Thompson, thanked him, and then turned to look at her granddaughter who was sitting on the hospital bed.
Connor Bell had passed, and the mother and daughter had become enemies, such a significant event made it impossible for the Gunn Family to keep it from Mrs. Gunn.
Upon learning the news, Mrs. Gunn had immediately rushed to Capital City.
"My child, you’ve been wronged," Mrs. Gunn sighed, her eyes revealing a hint of apology, "I’ve come today to say I’m sorry. Your mother doesn’t understand things, if you ever need anything, you can go to your uncles."
Julia Land looked at Mrs. Gunn sitting before her and felt her sincerity.
She pursed her lips; she wasn’t one to make unreasonable trouble or to take her anger out on others.
She said with a light smile, "Mrs. Gunn, thank you for your kindness, but there’s no need for you to apologize. Perhaps it’s just that my parents were not fated to be together."
By referring to her as ’Mrs. Gunn,’ her intention was clear; she did not wish to have any contact with the Gunn Family.
Mrs. Gunn wasn’t offended either, she smiled kindly, "Regardless, the door of the Gunn Family will always be open to you as long as I live."
Julia Land smiled faintly, "Thank you."
Maxwell Bell also apologized to Julia Land. He hadn’t expected his aunt to go as far as to throw Talisman Water on his cousin.
When his cousin had not yet been found, his aunt clearly missed her.
Why, after finding her cousin, had it come to the point where mother and daughter now disowned each other?
Maxwell Bell helped Mrs. Gunn leave the hospital room.
James Thompson quickly pecked Julia Land and said softly, "Rest well; don’t think too much."
He adjusted the head of the hospital bed and helped her lie down.
"Mr. Thompson, I won’t think too much, my relationship with Madame Bell is only through blood after all."
*
Mrs. Gunn had just arrived in Capital City from Sea Pearl City and went to see Julia Land first before going to First Hospital to see her own daughter.
Madame Bell’s face lit up with surprise when Mrs. Gunn came in, "Mom, you’re here! Why didn’t you tell me in advance?"
Celeste Lewis quickly stood up to greet Mrs. Gunn, then shyly glanced at Maxwell Bell.
"Who is this?" Mrs. Gunn didn’t pay attention to her daughter for the moment but instead looked at Celeste Lewis.
"Celeste, from the Lewis Family, Arthur’s fiancée. They will be getting married soon," Madame Bell said with a smile, "Mom, Celeste has really been taking good care of me these days."
Celeste blushed, yet still smiled warmly.
Mrs. Gunn looked at Celeste Lewis and nodded, with a hint of a smile, "Celeste, thank you for taking care of Lyra during this time."
Celeste hastily said, "Grandma, you’re too polite, I’m just doing what I should."
Madame Bell smiled broadly, and turned to Mrs. Gunn, "Mom, Celeste is really thoughtful and has helped me a lot."
Madame Gunn nodded slightly. Celeste Lewis was very astute and likely guessed that Madame Gunn wanted to have a word with Madame Bell, so she found an excuse to go make a phone call.
Once Celeste Lewis stepped out of the hospital room, Madame Gunn’s facial expression turned stern instantly.
Seeing the serious look on Madame Gunn’s face, Madame Bell knew her mother was angry, "Mom, what’s wrong? Who has upset you?"
"You," Madame Gunn looked at Madame Bell, her eyes carrying a hint of reproach, "Lyra, Julia Land is after all your daughter, how could you treat her this way? To turn a mother-daughter relationship into one of enemies, you have truly disappointed me."
Madame Bell’s face changed slightly, and she hurriedly explained, "Mom, the fortune-teller said she has an ill-fated destiny that would bring harm to her parents. I was just afraid that she would bring us misfortune."
Madame Gunn was on the verge of passing out in frustration; she snorted coldly, took a deep breath, "I think you should be in a psychiatric hospital. Just because of some nonsense about bringing harm to her parents, you push away your own flesh and blood. I have failed to educate you properly."
Madame Bell bowed her head in feeling wronged, no longer trying to defend herself.
Her stubborn appearance made Madame Gunn’s head ache.
How had she never realized how foolish her daughter could be?
Madame Gunn frowned and her tone became even more severe, "Julia Land is Connor Bell’s only daughter. By doing this, are you being fair to your husband? Are you being fair to the Bell Family?"
At this moment, Madame Bell, somewhat uneasily fidgeting with her fingers, said in a low voice, "She brought misfortune upon Connor."
Madame Gunn held her forehead, looking at her daughter who refused to see reason, her eyes full of helplessness and pain, "Lyra, after all the hardships Julia Land has been through, you haven’t even tried to make things right with her, and you’re still treating her this way. I just hope you won’t have any regrets in the future."
Madame Bell remained silent.
With an icy face, she slowly said, "Mom, do you know why Connor had that car accident? Because that day he was on his way to the airport—he was going to Inkwell City! And why was he going to Inkwell City? At that time, Julia Land was also in Inkwell City!"
Madame Gunn rubbed her brow, realizing there was this reason too, but "Lyra, it was an accident, you can’t blame the child for that."
"Why can’t I blame her? It’s because of her that Connor went to Inkwell City," Madame Bell said, her eyes full of disgust.
Maxwell Bell, who had been standing by Madame Gunn’s side, frowned slightly, "Aunt, didn’t uncle tell you why he was going to Inkwell City?"
She answered coldly, "What reason could there be but to go see Julia Land?"
Maxwell Bell’s brow furrowed, "That’s not it at all. Uncle was going to Inkwell City that day to invite a well-known expert in the industry to come to Capital City to treat you."
Madame Bell didn’t believe him; her voice grew louder, "Nonsense!"
Seeing how agitated Madame Bell was, Maxwell Bell, recalling what the doctor had said, didn’t dare to continue.
Madame Gunn sighed and stood up, "I’m going to rest, Lyra, you should really think things over. You have deeply disappointed me."
"Arthur, escort this old grandma to the hotel, to let her cool off on her own."
Maxwell Bell, worried about Madame Bell’s current state, supported Madame Gunn as they left the hospital room.
Madame Bell sat on the hospital bed, her gaze lost. Was she wrong?
As Madame Bell thought, tears involuntarily streamed down her face.
While Maxwell Bell was escorting Madame Gunn to the hotel for rest, Celeste Lewis walked into the hospital room.
Seeing Madame Bell in tears, Celeste Lewis quickly went over to comfort her anxiously, "Aunt, please don’t cry, the doctor said you need to rest well, you can’t let yourself get agitated or sad."
Madame Bell lifted her head and saw Celeste Lewis’s concerned look. She wiped her tears, forcing a trace of a smile, "Celeste, I’m okay."
Celeste Lewis gently took Madame Bell’s hand and said softly, "Aunt, don’t worry, you still have me and Arthur, we will take good care of you."
Madame Bell nodded, taking a deep breath, "Celeste, was I really wrong in how I treated Julia Land?"
Celeste Lewis’s heart immediately tightened. The worse Madame Bell’s attitude toward Julia Land, the tenser their mother-daughter relationship would be, which was all the more advantageous for her.
She quickly organized her thoughts and said, "It’s just that Julia Land is too headstrong. If you two can’t get along, there’s no need to force it."
Celeste Lewis persevered, "Aunt, Arthur grew up under your care and he is very filial to you."
Madame Bell, after hearing this, nodded, "Arthur is indeed very filial."
There were indeed no points in forcing a strained relationship.
Thinking back to what Maxwell Bell had said just earlier, she became engulfed in sadness.
Her husband had gone to Inkwell City for her sake.
