Goodbye, Ex-husband! I’m Pregnant with Your Uncle’s Child! -
Chapter 265: To Inkwell City
Chapter 265: Chapter 265: To Inkwell City
"The Chairman of the Bell Group is downstairs, Mr. Chairman; he wishes to see you."
Julia Land was puzzled for a moment—why would Maxwell Bell want to see her?
"Please ask him to come up."
Assistant Scott responded affirmatively and went downstairs to bring Maxwell Bell up.
Not long after, Maxwell Bell entered the Chairman’s office.
Julia Land glanced at Maxwell Bell with a frosty demeanor, "Mr. Bell, please have a seat."
Maxwell Bell sat down on the couch without beating around the bush and began directly, "Julia Land, last night, late in the evening, your aunt was rushed to the emergency room."
Julia Land leisurely typed a few characters on her keyboard.
Hearing this, she had a rough idea of why he came to see her today.
Leaning casually against the chair back, she said, "I’m not a doctor. Why are you telling me this?"
Maxwell Bell looked displeasedly at Julia Land, "Don’t you think you’re being too heartless? Over the years, your aunt and the others have spent a great deal of manpower and financial resources looking for you, they never gave up on you, and now that your aunt has been to the emergency room and been diagnosed with kidney issues..."
Julia Land remained calm, her gaze cold and resolute, "Mr. Bell, I have already said that I have no familial ties. Madame Bell’s visit to the emergency room is her own health issue, which is none of my concern."
Her words were extremely callous.
Maxwell Bell’s face immediately turned even uglier as he almost gritted his teeth and said, "Julia Land, whether you acknowledge it or not, you still have the blood of the Bell Family coursing through you. Your aunt and uncle have never forced you to do anything, but if the elders are sick and hospitalized, you should at least go and see them."
Julia Land’s expression remained indifferent, utterly emotionless.
Maxwell Bell took a deep breath, "You really won’t even go to take a glance?"
Julia Land said coldly, "No."
Maxwell Bell had not expected Julia Land to be so heartless upon hearing that his mother was in the emergency room.
He knew he couldn’t persuade Julia Land, and with a hint of anger, left the office.
Julia Land watched Maxwell Bell’s departing figure, rubbed her temples, and continued to immerse herself in work.
**
On the day set for departure to Inkwell City, the weather in Capital City was not good, overcast and hinting at rain.
After a long twenty-hour flight, Julia Land and her party safely arrived at the airport in Inkwell City.
The weather in Inkwell City today was fine.
Sunny with a clear blue sky and white clouds.
Tyler Hughes, pushing the luggage cart, walked alongside Julia Land, with bodyguards escorting them to the hotel.
"Boss, would you like to check out the famous West District of Inkwell City tonight?" Tyler Hughes had clearly noticed that Julia Land seemed a bit off since landing in Inkwell City, which is why he suggested it.
The summit was not until tomorrow, so a visit to the West District tonight would not be disruptive.
Julia Land, looking out at the azure sky, nodded, "You make the arrangements."
Tyler Hughes smiled, put the luggage in its place, and left the room; he was staying in the suite next door.
By six in the evening, Julia Land and Tyler Hughes went to the West District.
There were quite a few tourists around, and Julia Land bought two cute little gifts that Dale would like.
Holding the gifts, she turned around and saw a man standing across the street.
The man was holding a doll, which somehow didn’t match his aloof demeanor.
He looked up, his eyes met Julia Land’s, and, almost as if by some tacit agreement, both averted their gaze at the same time.
Julia Land had not expected to run into Mr. Thompson on her first day in Inkwell City.
A wave of emotion stirred within her, but she quickly steadied herself.
"Boss, ahead is the famous Glara Restaurant. Can we have dinner here?" Tyler Hughes extended his hand to stop a stranger from bumping into Julia Land.
"Sure, let’s go," said Julia Land, striding forward, temporarily setting aside the accidental encounter from moments before.
James Thompson watched Julia Land’s retreating figure, lowered his gaze to conceal his deep longing, and bent to get into his car.
His visit to the West District had been impulsive, and he had not expected to encounter little Pearwil.
*
Glara Restaurant’s decor was distinctive and colorful.
Very characteristic.
Julia Land and Tyler Hughes found a seat by the window and ordered local specialties.
While enjoying the meal, Julia Land overheard the next table discussing Pearwill Group.
One of the girls at the next table spoke in a hushed tone, "I really don’t get it, nothing like this has ever happened at Pearwill Group. You’re so capable, and yet they moved you from the Executive Office to the Testing Department."
"Do you know what people are saying about you? They’re saying you were trying to seduce the Chairman and that’s why you were transferred."
"...That’s ridiculous," Elizabeth Shaw said with a laugh, "It’s okay, besides, the Testing Department isn’t so bad, there’s less pressure."
She continued with raised eyebrows, "After all, the salary is the same. It doesn’t matter where I go, right?"
Sophie Woods sighed helplessly, "Only you would be so easygoing, Liz. Have you ever met our mysterious boss?"
Elizabeth Shaw nodded, "Yes, I have."
"What does he look like?" asked Sophie Woods curiously.
Elizabeth Shaw thought of James Thompson’s face and said confidently, "He’s quite handsome; now hurry up and eat, stop asking questions."
*
After dinner.
Julia Land and Tyler Hughes left the restaurant and went straight back to the hotel.
Meanwhile, outside Glara Restaurant, Elizabeth Shaw stood waiting for her friend Sophie Woods to bring the car around.
She looked down and saw a ring on the ground, bent down, and picked it up.
The ring looked exquisite, valuable upon closer inspection.
Elizabeth Shaw looked around, unsure of whom it might belong to, and pondered taking it to the police if it was indeed valuable.
Sophie Woods arrived by car, stopped, and looking at Elizabeth Shaw, who was still standing there, said, "Liz, get in the car. What are you daydreaming about with that ring?"
Elizabeth Shaw pocketed the ring and walked around to the passenger side to get in.
As they drove, Sophie Woods asked curiously, "Where did you get that ring? It wouldn’t be from a certain someone, would it?"
Elizabeth Shaw rolled her eyes at her friend and laughed, "Stop talking nonsense; where would I get a certain someone?"
At the same time, back at the hotel, Julia Land, having taken a shower, stepped out of the bathroom and suddenly paused.
The image of James Thompson she had seen today in the West District came to mind.
The doll he was holding was probably for Dale.
Julia Land walked to the sofa and grabbed her small leather bag.
She first took out her phone from the bag and then, while looking for the ring, discovered that it was missing.
Julia Land felt a jolt in her heart; on a more thorough search, the ring was nowhere to be found.
The ring must have been lost back in the West District; it would probably be very difficult to find again.
Julia Land closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then she opened her eyes, quickly changed clothes, and left her room.
She went back to the West District and retraced her steps from earlier in the day.
She scanned the ground as she walked.
Until she had retraced the entire route.
There was no sign of the wedding ring.
Dazzling lights shone on the pavement as Julia Land pursed her red lips and thought it best to let the ring go; keeping it was pointless anyway.
