Chapter 239: Chapter 239: Something Happened?
The Moore Group held its shareholders’ meeting on the fixed date of June 1st every year.
The shareholders’ meeting was an important event in the operations of a company.
Today was the day of the shareholders’ meeting, and Julia Land set out early. She took off for the company by car.
En route, she took a call from Connor Bell. "Dad?"
Connor Bell spoke in a warm voice, "Julia, when will you have time to bring Dale back for a meal? Also, dad wants to ask if you want to change to the surname Bell."
They had not formally met with Dale Land yet.
As for the matter of changing her name, Connor Bell wouldn’t insist.
"Dad, I should have time to bring Dale back for a meal in a couple of days. As for the surname, I don’t want to change it for the time being; a lot of documents would need to be changed after that."
Connor Bell nodded understandingly on the other end, "Hmm, a name is just a form of address. The most important thing is that you acknowledge us in your heart."
Julia Land smiled lightly, "Thank you for your understanding, dad."
After hanging up the phone, the car had also arrived at the company.
Outside the front door of the Moore Group’s first floor, senior company executives stood ready to welcome the shareholders as they arrived.
The navy-blue sedan slowed to a halt, and Assistant Scott quickly got out of the car and respectfully opened the door for Julia Land.
Julia Land alighted from the car. Today, she was dressed in a formal suit jacket with matching trousers, and on her feet, she wore a pair of black high heels, looking both capable and elegant.
"Chairman, good morning," the welcoming executives greeted her one after another.
"Everyone, good morning, thank you for your hard work," Julia Land responded with a smile, heading to the entrance with determined steps.
Assistant Scott followed closely behind, holding a stack of documents, his face maintaining a professional smile, "Chairman, I have prepared all the materials and agenda for today’s meeting, and it might not go smoothly."
Julia Land nodded with understanding, "Very good, thank you Assistant Scott."
They made their way to the Moore Group’s lobby, and Assistant Scott pressed the elevator button, heading straight for the meeting room.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, several shareholders stood in the corridor outside the meeting room, discussing in low voices.
"The performance of the Moore Group last year was satisfactory, but today will be challenging," said a middle-aged man in a grey suit coldly. "I actually don’t approve of a woman with no qualifications managing the company, but all of you were persuaded by her."
This man was a member of the Moore Family, Uncle Moore, who also held shares in the Moore Group.
Hearing this, Julia Land smiled.
"Good morning, everyone."
"Director Land, good morning."
The group walked into the meeting room as if the previous discussion had never happened.
Once inside, Assistant Scott and the secretary distributed the meeting materials to all the shareholders present.
Julia Land then took her seat at the head of the conference table, quietly waiting for the meeting to begin.
The meeting had not yet started, but the atmosphere was already somewhat tense.
Uncle Moore sat in one of the front rows, his gaze cold.
Several other members of the Moore Family who held shares in the Moore Group were also present.
The meeting began, and Julia Land initiated the proceedings with an opening speech.
She summarized the company’s performance over the past year, showcased the various achievements, and laid out the directions for future development.
Her speech was concise and data-driven.
"Next, we will discuss the investment plan for new projects and the election of board members," Julia Land had just said, when she was interrupted.
Uncle Moore looked at her coldly, his eyes holding a hint of disdain, "Director Land, although you have summarized past achievements, I am skeptical about the future plans. You lack sufficient management experience and qualification. How can you ensure the company’s continued development?"
She signaled Assistant Scott to start the PowerPoint presentation, and detailed data and charts appeared on the screen.
Julia Land stood up, walked to the front of the screen, and began to explain in detail, pointing to the key parts with a laser pointer.
"Our company’s online shopping operations have begun restructuring, and coupled with the acquisition of Silicon Express, we are now combining shopping with delivery services to further expand our market share. Another project is our cloud development plan with Asia Cloud Group, which promises a bright future..."
The meeting room fell silent as the shareholders carefully examined the data and charts on the screen.
Some murmured to each other, while others seemed satisfied with the report.
However, the veteran shareholders from the Moore Family were not pleased.
Uncle Moore’s expression turned ugly, "The data looks good, but the market environment changes in an instant. How can you guarantee that no unexpected events will occur this year? You haven’t been in charge of the company for long, and you’ve already invested so much capital."
Julia Land replied calmly, "Uncle Moore, it is true that the market environment is unpredictable, but we have already developed detailed contingency plans to ensure that we can rapidly adjust our strategies and maintain competitive under any circumstances."
As soon as her voice fell, another shareholder nodded in admiration, "Director Land makes sense. I believe her plans are very thorough."
Seeing this, Uncle Moore had no choice but to fall silent. Despite his reluctance, he couldn’t find more points to argue against Julia Land’s rational responses.
Just then, he received a news report. He clicked to read it, his face turning colder as he abruptly stood up, "Wait! I think everyone should first check their phones and see the news about Silicon Express."
The shareholders looked at each other and pulled out their phones to check.
Assistant Scott also quickly found the news and handed it to Julia Land.
As Julia Land glanced down, the headline starkly read: #Five Cargo Ships Owned by Moore Group’s Newly Acquired Silicon Express Sunk#
A stir ran through the meeting room as the shareholders began to murmur among themselves, the atmosphere instantly becoming tense.
Julia Land calmly finished reading the news report, and looked up, her face still composed.
She turned to Assistant Scott. "Please immediately contact the team responsible for the Silicon Express project to confirm the authenticity and details of the news."
Assistant Scott quickly picked up the phone to contact the project team.
A few minutes later, he reported back, "Chairman, the situation is confirmed. Five cargo ships did indeed sink during transport. The exact cause is still under investigation."
Uncle Moore scoffed, "Director Land, how do you explain such a serious accident? You were just discussing the company’s future, and now such a grave incident has occurred. This is not a good sign. Are you truly capable of leading the Moore Group?"
