Chapter 234: Chapter 234 I Don’t Have

Grace Land was chased out by the Bell Family’s bodyguards, burning with rage. She cursed Julia Land on the street, "Julia Land, pray that you get hit and die in a car accident!"

Her trip to Capital City this time, she had thought she could make a quick buck off Julia Land.

But instead of gaining anything, she was dragged out by the Bell Family.

Grace Land felt her pockets, finding her money nearly gone, even the fare to return home was in question.

With no other choice, she decided to take the bus to the train station.

The bus was packed with people.

Grace Land stood holding the hanging strap.

When she finally arrived at the train station, she disembarked and felt her pockets, pausing in shock. Her money was gone!

She cursed furiously, "Who is so heartless to steal my money! That was my fare home!"

Grace Land, both hungry and anxious, was at a loss for what to do tonight without any money. And she couldn’t reach Victor Langston as his broken phone was with her and had just been stolen on the bus.

Heaven offered no solace.

Meanwhile, at the Bell Family banquet hall, James Thompson sent several messages.

One of the messages was to have someone drop Grace Land off at a highway outside the suburbs so she could walk back to the station by herself.

The banquet had only started a short while ago when Madame Bell excused herself and left early, citing ill health.

At six in the evening, the banquet ended.

Connor Bell personally escorted Julia Land to bid farewell to the guests.

*

In the Bell Family’s living room.

Butler Zhou served tea to the few heads of the household and then left the room.

Madame Bell sat with an unhappy expression; never in her life had she faced such embarrassment.

She felt stifled and short of breath just thinking about the surprised looks of the guests today.

Connor Bell also knew Madame Bell must be very angry, but he really hadn’t anticipated this turn of events.

He glanced at James Thompson, sitting beside his daughter, a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth.

Connor Bell looked down, studying the two paternity test reports in his hands—the reports were switched ones, and he’d had the director add a subtle letter marking to the original ones.

The atmosphere in the living room grew steadily more tense.

James Thompson lifted the teacup, suggesting Julia Land moisten her throat first. Julia Land silently mouthed her thanks.

Connor Bell’s gaze was sharp as he stared at Maxwell Bell, asking gravely, "Arthur, who else has touched or seen these two reports after you received them?"

Chloe Sullivan, sitting on the sofa with her head bowed, not daring to look up, bit her lip nervously as Connor Bell’s question was posed.

Maxwell Bell wasn’t a very foolhardy person, although he didn’t know the details of what had occurred, he realized the gravity of the situation.

He looked toward Chloe Sullivan with confusion, "I’ve only seen Little Chloe."

Connor Bell chuckled coldly, asking sternly, "Chloe Sullivan, did you switch the reports?"

Chloe Sullivan shook her head nervously, a flicker of panic in her eyes, "Godfather, I didn’t."

Madame Bell, puzzled, looked at Chloe Sullivan and then at her husband, her tone filled with bewilderment, "Husband, are you saying that the paternity reports were switched?"

Connor Bell nodded, "Yes, I never thought someone would be able to switch the reports right under Arthur’s nose."

This was an unforeseen development.

If it hadn’t been someone familiar, Arthur wouldn’t have been so careless.

"Do you suspect that Little Chloe switched the paternity reports?" Madame Bell looked at Chloe Sullivan in shock, "Little Chloe, why would you do this?"

Chloe Sullivan’s left hand tight-clenched the back of her right, her heart filled with unease.

She still tried to defend herself, "Godfather, godmother, I really didn’t do this; you can’t slander me."

Connor Bell’s tone became harsh, "Chloe Sullivan, it was you who induced my wife to get a paternity test, and Arthur only met you when retrieving the report—the whole affair points to you as having the motive, in what way has our Bell Family wronged you?"

He threw the two fake reports on the table.

Madame Bell looked at Chloe Sullivan with disbelief.

Chloe Sullivan suddenly stood up, tears welling up and her voice filled with passion, "Godfather, it really wasn’t me! I don’t have the means to prepare a fake paternity test, and how could I know which hospital you went to for the test?"

Julia Land nodded, putting down her cup of tea, "You make a good point; you don’t have such means."

Chloe Sullivan looked at Julia Land with eyes full of anger and grievance.

Julia Land smiled faintly, her tone gentle but edged, "Perhaps you could ask the person behind you."

"What person behind me?" Chloe Sullivan’s tears fell, and she turned to look at Madame Bell with a pleading, desperate tone, "Godmother, I really didn’t do any such thing!"

There was no evidence to prove it was her who had switched the reports!

As long as she kept insisting she hadn’t done it!

Madame Bell, seeing Chloe Sullivan’s desperate expression, felt a mix of sadness and anger, mostly disappointment.

Connor Bell’s gaze remained piercing as he coldly said, "Chloe Sullivan, a lack of evidence does not mean you haven’t done it, especially when your motive is so plain to see."

James Thompson added indifferently, "Do you think that without evidence, they can’t do anything to you?"

Connor Bell said coldly, "Denial is irrelevant; henceforth, you have no relation with the Bell Family, and we will not protect you."

Chloe Sullivan stood aside, her face pale as paper. She realized she had utterly failed.

Connor Bell’s words hit like a hammer, shattering all her hopes.

Soon, James Thompson may have her committed to a mental institution or perhaps simply not let her live.

No, that wouldn’t do; there was still that woman who could help her!

All because of that woman’s schemes, if only she had directly tampered with the paternity report of Julia Land and Connor Bell from the start, none of this would have happened!

Chloe Sullivan covered her face, crying as she ran out of the Bell Family home.

That woman must save her!

James Thompson squeezed Julia Land’s hand, comforting her, indicating that Chloe Sullivan couldn’t escape.

Madame Bell stood up with an ugly expression and without glancing at Julia Land, left the living room and went upstairs.

Connor Bell inwardly sighed, his wife was just too soft and naive, "Julia, for what happened today, I apologize on behalf of your mother."

Julia Land smiled, "Dad, rest assured, I won’t hold a grudge against Madame Bell."

No longer calling her ’mother.’

"Dad, it’s late; we should go now."

James Thompson’s fingers lovingly intertwined with Julia’s, and before leaving, he said to Connor Bell, "Father-in-law, it’s time to change your driver."

Connor Bell’s expression subtly changed.
