Chapter 232: Mortifying
Chapter 232: Chapter 232: Mortifying
3:30 PM.
The Bell family’s mansion was newly decorated, brimming with the fragrance of flowers.
The vast garden had been turned into a banquet venue, surrounded by colorful lights.
The guests stood in groups of three or five, conversing in low tones—the atmosphere was both lively and remarkably well-mannered.
"I heard the Bell family has found their daughter, who had been lost for many years—Miss Julia Land," a lady of high society whispered to her friend beside her.
"Indeed, it’s quite surprising. She is now the chairwoman of Moore Group," another lady affirmed with a nod.
It was truly a peak in life.
Julia Land and James Thompson had arrived at the Bell residence early, only to separate as soon as they reached there.
Connor Bell and Madame Bell stood at the entrance greeting the guests with smiles on their faces.
And Julia Land stood by Madame Bell’s side.
She wore a light blue gown today, both intelligent and appropriate for the occasion.
Cody Thompson also arrived at the Bell residence, dressed in a black suit, his demeanor serious.
He approached Mr. and Mrs. Bell, nodding slightly, "Congratulations on finding your long-lost daughter."
Connor Bell and Madame Bell smiled in response, "Thank you, please come in."
Cody Thompson glanced at Julia Land, nodded as if to greet her, then walked straight into the banquet area without any extra expression on his face.
Madame Bell checked the time, feeling somewhat anxious.
Maxwell Bell had not returned from the hospital with the paternity test report, and she wanted to make a phone call to check on the situation.
She turned to Connor Bell and whispered, "Husband, I’ll be away for a moment."
Connor Bell nodded, saying warmly, "Mm, Grace and I will be fine here. You go and take a break."
James Thompson was conversing with others not far away, his gaze occasionally resting on Julia Land.
Cody Thompson approached just as the guests Thompson was talking to had left.
With a stern face, Cody said, "I’ve already arranged for Eleanor and William to attend a school abroad, and they will be sent overseas next week."
James simply responded, "Mhm."
The relationship between father and son had become tense.
Seeing James made Cody angry, and having said his piece, he left.
Meanwhile, Madame Bell went to the study, took out her mobile phone, and called Maxwell Bell.
As soon as the phone connected, she asked eagerly, "Arthur, have you arrived at the hospital? Did you get the report?"
Maxwell Bell’s voice came through the phone, "Aunt, I have the reports from both hospitals. Don’t worry, I’m on my way back."
Maxwell Bell was only responsible for picking up the paternity test reports.
He hadn’t opened them, but felt it strange—why was another paternity test being done?
However, puzzled as he was, he didn’t ask any questions.
Maxwell Bell had just hung up the phone with Madame Bell when he saw a message from Chloe Sullivan.
[Arthur, where are you now? Could you please deliver a gift to Julia Land for me? I’m waiting outside the Bell residence.]
Maxwell Bell checked the time and replied, [Wait for me for about fifteen minutes.]
Chloe saw Maxwell Bell’s reply, her lips curling into a smile as she sat in her car, looking out.
"What a bustling scene."
Her smile carried an eager schadenfreude.
She watched luxury cars continuously entering the Bell residence, her eyes filled with envy.
The Sullivan family used to be one of the most prominent families in Dunmore City.
All because of Julia Land! All because of James Thompson!
Chloe opened the car door and got out to wait for Maxwell Bell.
About fifteen minutes passed, and Maxwell Bell’s car arrived at the Bell residence.
He saw Chloe Sullivan standing by the road and said to the driver, "Stop the car."
Chloe Sullivan walked quickly over, opened the car door, and got in.
She smiled and handed a gift box to Maxwell Bell, "Arthur, I know today is a joyous day for godmother and the rest, and I thought of getting Julia Land a gift. Could you please pass it on to her for me?"
Maxwell Bell took the gift box and glanced at Chloe Sullivan, "You can go in and give the gift to her yourself."
Chloe Sullivan spoke quietly, "I would have preferred to give it to Miss Land personally, but as you might know, we don’t get along."
Maxwell Bell nodded in understanding, "Alright, I’ll pass it on to her for you."
Chloe Sullivan smiled, "Thank you, Arthur."
Her gaze swiftly fell upon the two hospital-specific document envelopes on the table.
"I’ll get out now."
Just as Chloe Sullivan was about to open the door, she suddenly stopped.
She covered her chest, the location terribly embarrassing, and seemed a bit stunned.
Maxwell Bell noticed Chloe Sullivan’s odd behavior, "Little Chloe?"
Her face blushed red, and she hesitated to speak, "Arthur, could you put the partition down and step out for a moment?"
Maxwell Bell saw where she was covering and felt awkward.
He looked away, put the partition down, and got out of the car.
Chloe Sullivan’s lips curled up into an excited smile.
She reached out to open the two hospital document envelopes on the table—thankfully, they were the twist-tied kind, which could be reopened.
She took out the test results inside and placed them into her handbag, then hurriedly took out two prepared test results from her bag and put them in.
She was really curious about how that woman knew Madame Bell had gone to those two places for the paternity test?
Chloe Sullivan straightened her dress, opened the car door, and got out—her ears still red from the embarrassing incident at her chest, "Arthur, I’m leaving now."
She felt a twinge of regret inside. She really wanted to go into the Bell Family residence and watch the drama unfold, but she had no excuse.
Maxwell Bell returned to the Bell Family home and found Madame Bell, handing over the gift box and the two documents to her, "Aunt, Chloe Sullivan asked me to bring a gift for Julia Land."
Madame Bell told him to put the gift box on the table and took the two hospital document envelopes from him.
Maxwell Bell knew when to excuse himself, "Aunt, I’ll step out now."
"Hmm, go freshen up, I’ll need your help with the opening dance later," said Madame Bell gently.
**
Outside the grand entrance of the Bell Family home.
Grace Land stood there, a look of anxiety and unease on her face.
She spoke urgently to the security guard, "I’m here to find Julia Land, the chairman of the Moore Group. I’m her mother, and I have something very urgent to discuss with her."
The security guard frowned, looked at the somewhat disheveled woman before him, skeptical but still said, "Please wait a moment, I’ll ask for instructions."
At that moment, inside the Bell Family’s banquet hall, the atmosphere was lively.
James Thompson approached Julia Land with a wine glass, smiled as their glasses clinked, and whispered, "Grace Land has arrived."
Julia Land maintained a proper smile on her face and responded lightly, "Hmm."
Connor Bell frowned upon hearing the butler’s report. He was familiar with Grace Land, as she had appeared in previous investigation materials.
He walked over to Julia Land, glanced at James Thompson, and then said to Julia, "Julia, Grace Land has arrived. If you want to see her, we can arrange a meeting in the lounge."
Julia Land nodded slightly, signaling the butler to lead Grace Land to the lounge, "Dad, I will go see her now, there’s still time."
**
Inside the lounge.
Grace Land sat on the sofa, deliberately pretending to be ill at ease.
She surveyed the exquisitely decorated surroundings with envy—really rich indeed!
Seeing Julia Land, dressed in a high-end gown, walking in reminded her of her own wretched and sorry state, as she tried not to let the bitter expression show on her face.
Julia Land sat down on the sofa, sizing up Grace Land before asking dispassionately, "Ms. Land, what brings you here to see me?"
