Chapter 213: I Will Cry
Chapter 213: Chapter 213: I Will Cry
James Thompson glanced around the art exhibition before approaching Madame Bell with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, "Madame Bell, let’s have a talk."
Madame Bell had guessed that James Thompson came to her this time because of Julia Land.
Chloe Sullivan gripped Madame Bell’s hand tightly, also surmising the purpose of James’s visit.
Madame Bell gently patted the back of Chloe’s hand and nodded lightly.
Chloe, still worried, followed Madame Bell.
The three of them went to the exhibition’s office.
James Thompson pulled over a chair, distancing himself from Madame Bell and Chloe, "Madame Bell, thank you for taking care of my little Julia."
His words carried a cold irony.
Madame Bell’s face changed slightly, with displeasure evident in her eyes.
Although James Thompson held a certain status in Capital City, he was after all a junior, and such an attitude made her uncomfortable.
James Thompson continued with a smile, "Madame Bell, the Gunn Family is not without strong enemies, it is better to stop while you can."
Madame Bell’s expression stiffened, her eyes grew cold, "You can try, right now everything is just being handled according to the rules. If Moore Group behaves properly, there shouldn’t be any problem."
Hearing this, James’s eyes became sharp, "I hope so, Madame Bell. We are all sensible people here, some matters are better left hinted at, pushing too far could result in unwanted consequences."
Madame Bell gave a cold laugh, responding strongly, "James Thompson, if it weren’t for your sending Eleanor abroad, we could have stayed out of each other’s way. Little Chloe and the children haven’t done anything to bother you or Julia."
Chloe kept silent by the side, her mind flashing with complex emotions.
He indeed came for Julia.
James Thompson crossed his legs, the man having looked more restrained and refined since his hair began graying slightly in recent years, he smirked lightly, "Madame Bell, I wonder if Miss Sullivan has mentioned anything to you about the twins’ origins?"
Upon hearing this, Chloe suddenly looked up, her face turning pale.
What was James trying to do?
Her fingers trembled slightly.
No, he cherished Lucy Thompson the most; he wouldn’t speak of it.
Madame Bell turned to glance at Chloe, noticing her pale face, and frowned slightly before turning back to James, "The twins’ origins? What do you mean?"
James Thompson sneered, "This matter is indeed a scandal of the Thompson Family. I have always preferred not to let my sister be slandered after her death, Madame Bell. I do not wish to make a fuss, but you should know some of it to avoid being kept in the dark."
His words were clearly suggestive.
Chloe felt a tightness in her chest.
She felt like fainting.
Madame Bell felt a surge of confusion.
"The twins are my sister’s children with another man," James Thompson contained his mocking smile, his eyes showing a hint of pain, sometimes he hated his father a lot, "Madame Bell, I hope this matter remains confidential."
Madame Bell’s eyes widened in shock.
Hadn’t Lucy Thompson passed away long ago?
Thinking of the advanced medical technology now available, her expression gradually turned serious.
Chloe was filled with anxiety. He had actually spoken. She bit her tongue tip to try to clear her mind.
James Thompson stood up and walked out of the office coldly.
The office fell silent.
Madame Bell’s expression was stern, speechless.
Chloe knew she couldn’t keep this a secret any longer. She decided to take drastic action.
She covered her face and knelt on the floor, sobbing painfully.
"Godmother, Eleanor came from my womb, I’ve treated them as my own children, was I wrong?"
This questioning, filled with pain, echoed in the office.
Madame Bell looked down at Chloe soBroken-hearted, unsure whether to be angry at her deception.
Her heart was flooded with complex feelings; Chloe had been by her side for years, and they had developed a bond.
She had once thought Chloe was a victim, having children and then abandoned by James Thompson.
But now she found out that the situation was much more complicated than she had thought.
Madame Bell was silent for a moment before finally speaking, "Little Chloe, why didn’t you tell me the truth earlier?"
Chloe’s tears flowed incessantly. She spoke softly, "Godmother, I was scared. When I knew the children in my womb belonged to someone else, I thought about dying. But after Eleanor and William were born, I felt relieved. To me, they are my children, truly my own."
She continued sobbingly, "I am indeed the darling daughter of the Sullivan Family, I had a good life, but my boyfriend’s mother arranged for me to be a surrogate. Godmother, if this comes out, how will people see me? Their words could kill me."
Madame Bell looked at Chloe Sullivan in such a disheveled state, feeling both pity and anger at her for hiding the truth.
She slowly said, "Little Chloe, I understand your difficulties, but you should not have hidden the children’s origins from me."
She truly loved her as if she were her own daughter.
Chloe Sullivan covered her face in agony and choked up, "Godmother, I never wanted to reveal this secret. It hurts me, and I worry that the children will suffer in the future too."
Madame Bell sighed, reached out, and gently patted Chloe Sullivan’s shoulder, her tone carrying a hint of helplessness, "Get up, my child, what am I to say about you..."
Chloe Sullivan, kneeling, embraced Madame Bell’s legs, crying loudly.
As if this painful matter had been weighing on her heart for a long time.
Her eyelids drooped, and a resentful light flickered in her eyes.
*
Madame Bell returned to the Bell household, and Connor Bell noticed her tired expression and frowned, asking, "My lady, are you feeling unwell?"
Madame Bell paused and shook her head, "It’s nothing, don’t worry."
Connor Bell looked at her closely and, holding her hand, advised, "I know you care deeply for Little Chloe, but you must take care of your health, which is of utmost importance to me."
To Connor Bell, no matter how good Chloe Sullivan was, his wife’s health mattered the most.
Lately, Madame Bell had been constantly worried about Chloe Sullivan, and Connor Bell had seen it all.
Hearing Connor Bell’s words, Madame Bell gave him a stern look, yet felt a bit sweeter.
The couple were, after all, old partners in life.
"I will take care of my health," Madame Bell felt a warmth in her heart and sighed, "I found out some things today that gave me a headache."
Connor Bell asked the living room’s servants to leave.
The couple privately discussed Chloe Sullivan’s situation.
After listening, Connor Bell fell silent for a while and then said, "Given the circumstances, it’s best for Eleanor and William to be sent abroad. Let’s leave this matter here. If the children learn the truth in the future, it might upset them. Cody Thompson is too stubborn."
Connor Bell understood Cody Thompson’s nature quite well.
As a father, hearing about his daughter’s lineage, he might make a wrong decision.
It’s a pity for Lucy Thompson, a talent gone too soon.
Thinking of Lucy Thompson, Connor Bell also thought of his own missing daughter, feeling a pang of sorrow.
Madame Bell sighed and nodded in agreement with Connor Bell’s words.
With that settled, there was no need to pursue the custody battle any further.
**
In the evening.
Arthur Bell attended a business social event and received a call from Chloe Sullivan in the midst.
"Arthur, can you do me a favor?" Chloe Sullivan’s voice sounded weak.
Arthur Bell moved to a quieter spot, his voice steady, asking, "Hmm, are you ill?"
Her voice sounded frail.
Chloe Sullivan sat in the bathtub, lifting her hand to make ripples in the water.
Arthur Bell, on the other end of the phone, heard the sound of water.
Alongside the weak voice of Chloe Sullivan, the sound traveled, "Arthur, please thank godmother for me, thank her for her caring and looking after me all these years."
Arthur Bell frowned, feeling increasingly puzzled, "You can tell this to your godmother directly."
There was silence on the other end for a while, then Chloe Sullivan slowly said, "I’m afraid...I’ll cry."
She then hung up the phone.
Chloe Sullivan put the phone down, picked up a sharp fruit knife from beside the bathtub.
She lifted her left hand, water dripping drop by drop from her wrist into the water.
Soon, the fruit knife moved, and red blood spilled from her wrist.
Blood dripped drop by drop into the water.
Chloe Sullivan stared at the increasingly reddening bathtub, and burst into a mirthless laugh.
A touch of madness in her eyes.
Arthur Bell felt something was amiss and immediately redialed, but Chloe Sullivan’s phone remained unreachable.
