Chapter 188 Complexion
Chapter 188: Chapter 188 Complexion
Dust settled.
When James Thompson and Julia Land arrived, they were greeted by the sight of James Knight’s listless demeanor.
Seeing the two of them, James Knight looked as if he had seen his saviors.
"BOSS, I swear, I’ll never have kids when I get married."
"...."
James Thompson was speechless, pulling a grimace.
Julia Land coughed lightly, feeling that this somehow related to her daughter.
James Knight scratched his head.
He’d spent the entire night racking his brain for children’s stories, answering a hundred thousand ’whys’, and was in utter despair.
He stepped aside, allowing the two to enter the house.
Dale Land was sitting on the sofa watching cartoons, her eyes fixed on the screen until the moment she saw Julia Land, when they instantly welled up with tears.
"Mommy!"
She leaped off the sofa and, with small strides, charged toward Julia Land like a cannonball.
Then... she was scooped up by someone.
James Thompson, worried that the little girl might knock Julia Land over, instinctively caught her in his arms.
Father and daughter were suddenly staring eye to eye.
With her eyes still brimming with tears, Dale Land spied James Thompson and her surprise bloomed, "Uncle Moore!"
"...."
This scene left Julia Land feeling both sour and amused.
James Thompson curled his lips into a smile and explained, "Dale, I’m your father, my name is James Thompson."
"Daddy?" Dale Land’s little mouth shaped an ’o’, "You’re Dale’s daddy?"
The little girl blinked, nodding her head, "I get it, like mama duck and duckling."
"?!"
The novice parents were struggling to keep up with the little girl’s train of thought.
"Mama duck looks just like the duckling, daddy looks just like Uncle Moore." Dale Land watched James Thompson with curious eyes, seemingly because his face was so familiar to her.
With her small fingers fidgeting, pulling at her clothes, she shyly introduced herself, "Daddy, I’m Dale Land, and I’m four years old."
In that moment, James Thompson was immensely grateful that Christopher Moore hadn’t taken the lives of mother and daughter.
"Let’s go home."
**
Julia Land had just flown back to Capital City from the sand.
She received a call from Mrs. Moore asking her to visit the Moore Estate the next day.
She had switched to another mobile phone, but hadn’t yet managed to change her number.
So far, Mr. and Mrs. Moore had been decent to her, but she was reluctant to have any more contact with the Moore Family.
"Mrs. Moore." Julia Land no longer called her Aunt Moore.
Mrs. Moore paused on the other end of the line, glancing at her husband, feeling that something must have happened for her daughter-in-law to suddenly refer to her formally.
She said softly, "Julia, if there’s something wrong, we can discuss it together."
"I will resign from the position of chairman," Julia Land was forthright, disliking dilly-dallying in her affairs, "Actually, I’m not your daughter-in-law. Christopher used my daughter to threaten me; he took her away from me for five years."
Mrs. Moore’s face turned pale in an instant.
Matthew Moore, noticing the change in his wife’s complexion, put down his teacup and sat next to her.
Mrs. Moore sighed with a bitter smile, her lips quivering, "I’m sorry."
At times, she wished her son had just been a heartless philanderer.
So there was this untold story all along.
Her daughter-in-law was gone just like that.
Her son had even used a child to threaten a woman.
Julia Land half-lowered her eyelids, withholding the news of Christopher’s death from Mrs. Moore.
"Miss Land, a lawyer will be looking for you tomorrow; we’re not sure why. If possible, could you come to the Moore Estate?" Mrs. Moore changed her address as well.
Julia Land was puzzled – what would a lawyer want with her?
She didn’t immediately reply concerning Mrs. Moore’s request but simply said, "I’ll think about it and get back to you."
She hung up the phone.
Julia Land decided to consult with Mr. Thompson about the matter, "Mr. Thompson, Mrs. Moore asked me to visit the Moore Estate and mentioned that a lawyer will be looking for me tomorrow."
Mr. Thompson held the still-sleeping Dale Land with slightly stiff arms, "I’ll accompany you."
He remained deeply concerned about the words Christopher Moore had said before his death.
With Mr. Thompson’s promise to accompany her, Julia Land nodded and messaged Mrs. Moore that she would come the next day.
*
After hanging up, Mrs. Moore wept in Matthew Moore’s arms.
By nature, she was a cheerful woman, not prone to tears.
She recounted to Matthew what Julia had told her.
After hearing it, Matthew sat in silence for a few seconds before sighing, "Our son must be at peace now."
Mrs. Moore abruptly stopped crying.
She looked up sharply, "What did you say?"
No matter what, Christopher was the flesh of her own flesh.
Matthew Moore sighed deeply.
"Ayu, all these years, we’ve been prepared mentally as well."
He gently took his wife’s hand.
In hindsight, they never should have brought their son back from abroad to study.
If their son hadn’t come back to the country, he wouldn’t have met the child, An An.
Fate had dictated it all.
*
The next day.
Julia Land and James Thompson had breakfast with Dale Land before setting out for the Moore Estate.
When they were leaving, the little one clung pitifully to Julia Land’s legs, wanting to go with them.
"Mommy," she called, her round eyes looking up at Julia Land, "take Dale with you, please?"
Julia Land bent down, lifting the little girl up, and looked toward James Thompson.
Mother and daughter both gazed at him with bright eyes.
Mr. Thompson chuckled lightly, "Let’s all go together."
Both mother and daughter smiled at the same time.
*
Moore Estate.
The two lawyers had already arrived.
Mr. and Mrs. Moore looked aged after just one night.
Mrs. Moore, seeing the stern look on James Thompson’s face, finally understood why her son would have used a child to threaten Julia Land when she saw the little girl in his arms.
She felt a twinge of guilt toward the little one.
Dale Land cheerfully greeted, "Hello grandpa, grandma, and uncles."
Mr. and Mrs. Moore smiled back at Dale Land.
The butler, Mr. Lin, served tea to the guests and left the study, his thoughts complex upon seeing Miss Land and Mr. Thompson arrive together.
The lawyers introduced themselves, and then lawyer Cheng said,
"Mr. Christopher Moore has bequeathed his twenty percent stake in the Moore Group to Ms. Julia Land."
"Additionally, there’s a trust fund currently valued at three billion set aside for Miss Dale Land."
The expressions of James Thompson and Julia Land simultaneously darkened.
