Chapter 157: Chapter 157 Study Room

"Mr. Thompson, go to the supermarket and buy me some things; I’ll make a list for you."

Eliza Quarter brushed off the hand resting on her shoulder and pretended to hold her lower back as if in pain while she reached for pen and paper.

The man watched her gesture, a faint smile curling at the corner of his mouth, making it seem as though she was the one seven or eight months pregnant.

Eliza made a long list of miscellaneous items; either way, it would take him at least an hour to get back from the supermarket.

After finishing the list, she handed the slip of paper to James Thompson with a cheerful smile, "Hurry up and go, and come back quickly."

James Thompson leaned lazily against the couch, his dark eyes fixed on Eliza as he took the list and glanced at it—it was all daily necessities and some fruit.

"Hurry up," Eliza continued to watch TV, nudging his leg with a pillow, "Why are you so lazy now? You used to be very diligent."

How things are now, how they were before.

The man’s brain ached at the comparison; feeling rushed, he grabbed the car keys and left, "Alright, alright."

Eliza waited for the man to leave before heading to the study.

He wouldn’t be back from the supermarket so soon.

Entering the study and sitting down at the computer desk, she switched on James Thompson’s computer and saw his new phone charging on the desk. He wasn’t using his old one.

For some reason, Eliza reached out for the charging phone.

The phone asked for a password. After two failed attempts, she randomly typed a combination and, to her surprise, it unlocked.

Eliza was instantly stunned.

Her shocked expression was reflected as she looked at the surveillance screen on the main display of the phone.

It showed her sitting in the study, holding the phone in the middle of her shock.

There was a click at the door.

Someone pushed the door from outside.

*

Upon hearing the door open, Eliza looked up in fright towards the doorway.

The man who was supposed to have gone to the supermarket had returned.

She casually raised an eyebrow at the man standing in the doorway, withdrew her gaze back to the phone, and nonchalantly asked, "When did you install a surveillance camera in the study? I had no idea. Isn’t it odd to have one in here?"

The man smiled slightly. He walked in, circled behind her, bent down, and wrapped his arms around her.

His hands grasped hers, which were still holding the phone.

His lips quirked into a small smile.

From the phone’s surveillance display, one could see a man embracing a woman from behind.

They were close, cheek to cheek.

The man’s face, tender with a smile, pressed against hers, his gaze deepening, "There’s some important documentation in the study."

"Oh, and why did you come back? Did you forget something?" Eliza casually put down his phone and turned to look at him, "Can I go to the supermarket with you?"

"Of course not, you need to rest at home, take care of yourself. I came back for my phone."

The man did not let go of his embrace from behind Eliza; his face slightly shifted away.

Eliza said with slight irritation, "Fine, just go then."

The man shot a thoughtful glance at her, then gently said, "Kiss me, and I’ll go."

"..."

Eliza raised an eyebrow, a pretended smile playing on her lips as she turned, her fair fingers pinching the man’s chin, her lips parting slightly, "You kiss me."

"..."

Less than half a second passed.

The man flashed an unfathomable smile.

"Hurry up then, if you’re going to kiss, do it quickly. I want to watch my show."

After finishing her sentence, Eliza rolled her eyes and frowned, "I just remembered, you used to give me goodnight kisses before sleep, why don’t you do that anymore?"

The man released her and stood up straight, gazing down at her for a moment.

He reached out to unplug the charging cable from the phone, "I did kiss you secretly, while you were asleep. Your body can’t do much right now."

"I’m heading to the supermarket."

The door to the study closed once more.

Eliza turned on the computer, looking up information on childcare.

The man drove away from the traditional-style villa and made a phone call to his subordinate, his voice becoming gentle and refined.

His voice was naturally different from the laid-back and deep tone of James Thompson.

"Has it been discovered who was behind the arrest of the organ trafficking personnel?"

Although he saw James Thompson was close to the explosion site, he couldn’t help but worry.

"It turns out the people involved are from the police force."

As long as it wasn’t related to that guy James Thompson, it was fine.

**

Chloe Sullivan flew back to Dunmore City from Capital City just to see James Thompson once.

Thinking about how he carefully helped Julia Land out of the car, she tossed and turned in bed unable to sleep the night before.

She just wanted to talk to him.

Chloe rarely returned to Dunmore City, and today she accompanied her mother and aunt to a tea party.

Yan Wenlin, now full of vigor and all smiles, hadn’t reached the tea party when she turned to Chloe and asked, "Where is James Thompson now?"

"Dunmore City."

Chloe responded; she lowered her head to reply to her close girlfriends in Dunmore City about getting together tonight.

"When are you going to bring James Thompson home for a meal? When do you plan to get married? We should discuss these matters," Yan Wenlin posed a series of questions.

Chloe’s pupils trembled slightly, and she calmly replied, "Mom, there’s no rush."

Selene Wells, sitting on the left, looked at Chloe with a slight frown, "Chloe, is Mr. Thompson with Miss Land?"

Chloe lowered her eyes and did not answer, which was tantamount to confirmation.

At this, Yan Wenlin’s smile faded too, and her expression darkened a bit, "I didn’t expect Julia Land to be so capable. A woman who has already been divorced can still attract James Thompson."

"Mom, please don’t speak like that, it’s unpleasant to hear if others overhear," Chloe wrapped her arms around Yan Wenlin’s, "Don’t be angry."

"You’re just too nice," Yan Wenlin said resignedly, "but in the end, it’s you the Thompson Family acknowledges."

Yan Wenlin changed the subject, "There’s gossip that Noah Quarter ended his marriage with his first love Arabella Shaw because he can’t forget his ex-wife."

"Julia Land surely is incredible. Look at her background – not the best, her mother was sent to jail by her, the cause of her stepsister’s death is also quite mysterious, and the Langston Family has also declined. She’s like a woman who brings misfortune everywhere."

Chloe smiled faintly, her eyes flickering slightly; she had also heard about these matters, "Where is her mother detained?"

Yan Wenlin shook her head, "I don’t know. If you want to find out, you could inquire."

"No need, I was just momentarily curious."

Chloe refused with a smile.

The car arrived at the location of the tea party, held in an antique garden.

"Mom, Thomas Sullivan’s mother is here, I want to go say hello," Eliza Quarter checked her outfit.

Leah Thompson set down her teacup and gave her daughter a stern look, "I’ll go with you."

She feared her daughter wasn’t quite adept at speaking and might offend someone.

Eliza had known that Thomas Sullivan’s mother would be attending the tea party, which was why she came along.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t bother coming just to brew and drink tea and chat.

"When did Miss Sullivan return to Dunmore City? What about the twins? Did you bring them too?" Leah Thompson asked Chloe with a smile.

"Mrs. Quarter, please, just call me Chloe. I just got back a few days ago, the children are in Capital City," Chloe replied with a smile.

Chloe’s gaze fell on Eliza’s face.

With a deepening smile, she took Eliza’s hand, "I’ll go over there with Eliza; this place is for moms to chat."

After walking a short distance, Chloe leaned in close to Eliza’s ear, "After the tea party, my cousin will come to pick us up to dine at a newly opened restaurant. If you and Mrs. Quarter are interested, we could go together, would you like to?"

Hearing that Thomas Sullivan would also be there, Eliza nodded with slightly reddened ears, smiling, "Sure."

Chloe smiled, feeling that if the second Mrs. Thompson, Maya Chant, sided with her, things would be easier for her at the Thompson Family.

Chloe’s phone in her bag rang, so she apologized to Eliza.

She took her phone out, glanced at the caller ID, "Brother Sullivan?"

"Chloe, I went to see James Thompson this morning," Trevor Sullivan’s voice carried a hint of helplessness, "I didn’t expect him to deny the twins are his children."

Chloe gripped the phone tightly, silent for a while; turning to Eliza, she excused herself and suggested Eliza go ahead and take a seat.

She walked to a deserted corridor before speaking, "Thank you, Brother Sullivan."

Trevor Sullivan offered comfort from the other end, "When James Thompson returns to Capital City, he’ll undergo a paternity test. When he sees the results, he’ll have nothing to say. I guess he might be denying it because of... Julia Land."

Chloe didn’t say anything for a while, then lightened her tone with a smile, "It’s okay if Brother Thompson doesn’t acknowledge them, Brother Sullivan, thank you."

In the end, Brother Thompson would acknowledge the twins.

Chloe hung up with a faint smile.
