Goodbye, Ex-husband! I’m Pregnant with Your Uncle’s Child! -
Chapter 125: Run Her Over
Chapter 125: Chapter 125: Run Her Over
James Thompson came out of the operating room and saw the message Jasper Winters had sent about Julia Land.
As a qualified assistant, Jasper had already had someone investigate the matter at Happy Garden’s utility bills when Julia asked him to check.
"Boss, this is the footage of the young man taking David Langston to the hospital. I’ve also sent someone to track him,"
James opened the video to watch.
In the video, the young man’s face was mostly obscured by a baseball cap, and he appeared to be around 176cm tall.
He was wearing loose clothing that made him appear neither skinny nor very muscular.
James, who understood human anatomy well, placed his index finger and thumb on the phone screen, enlarging the video.
He called Jasper and said, "This man’s normal physique should be slender, but he’s wearing muscle padding underneath, and his shoes have hidden lifts. He also has a limp in his left foot. I estimate he’ll get rid of the fake muscle suit when he runs away."
After hanging up with Jasper, James called Julia.
He undid his lab coat with one hand, listening to the dial tone on the other end.
No answer?
James switched the phone to his other hand and took off his lab coat to hang it on the rack.
He then called Julia’s bodyguard and found out where she was, "I’ll be there in about thirty minutes."
The bodyguard on the other end acknowledged.
James drove to the mall and went down to Happy City in level B2.
There he saw Julia.
He noticed her sitting there, fishing with a tiny fishing rod, catching fake fish.
She was surrounded by little kids; she was the only adult fishing.
James pulled out a hundred-dollar bill from his wallet, exchanged it for tokens, and listened as they clinked and clattered out.
He then went to the service desk, where he exchanged ten tokens for a little fishing rod and a small basket.
James sat down on the low stool next to Julia, his long legs awkwardly bent, giving off a distinctly uncomfortable look.
Julia had been daydreaming but instinctively turned her head and saw James, looking a bit astonished.
"Mr. Thompson, are you off work?"
"Yeah, I got off early, took some time off to be with my girlfriend."
As James said this, it felt to him like he was shirking his duties. He held the fishing rod, casting the line into the water, and caught a fake fish.
His dark eyes fixed on Julia, "I called you, but you didn’t answer."
Julia made a small sound of acknowledgment. She opened her small purse and rummaged through it, indeed not seeing her phone.
Then it hit her, "I left my phone in the car."
James placed the fake fish he had caught into Julia’s empty basket.
Julia looked at the fake fish in her basket, then back at James, who was also watching her.
They looked at each other like this, again and again.
"Julia, baby," James had barely spoken these words when Julia raised her hand to cover his mouth.
James, his mouth covered, smiled with a twinge of amusement.
Parents accompanying their kids glanced curiously at Julia and James.
Both were wearing masks, but from their figures and eyes, one could tell they were the attractive type.
Very pleasant to look at.
Julia gave James a warning stare and dropped the hand from his lips.
In public, how could he dare to call her ’Julia, baby’!
She wasn’t a three-year-old child.
James knew Julia was shy and caught another fake turtle, placing it in her little basket.
After fishing for fake fish for a while and not wanting to occupy the space meant for the kids’ fun, they decided to leave Happy City.
They walked out of the mall, with the driver cum bodyguard already having brought around the car to the entrance.
Julia got into the car and, sure enough, saw her phone had been left on the seat.
James looked at the wounds on her arm scratched and clawed multiple times, and his gaze grew cooler as he asked, "How did you get hurt?"
Julia’s gaze fell on her arm, the scratches on it from Arabella Shaw’s struggle.
"Fighting, it’s no big deal, I’ll just apply some ointment at home, it’ll heal in a few days."
Julia seemed nonchalant as she unlocked her phone to see if there were any new messages - the fugitive still hadn’t been caught.
James’s face was set.
He asked the bodyguard sitting in the front passenger seat to help buy some antiseptic ointment and cotton buds.
He had a chilly demeanor, yet an imposing presence.
Julia put down her phone, "Don’t be mad, it’s not too serious."
"Why bother to fight yourself, aren’t the bodyguards around you of any use?" James’s gaze shifted from the injured arm to Julia’s face, "Taking matters into your own hands, you even got yourself hurt."
Julia arched an eyebrow, "You don’t understand, it feels good, so good you don’t mind the wounds."
James almost wanted to massage his brow.
The pharmacy was nearby, so the bodyguard quickly returned with ointment and cotton buds.
"Give me your hand," James said, expecting Julia to cooperate.
Julia shifted and moved her seat away from James, leaning against the car door.
Applying medication to a wound hurts.
Arabella thought the wound would heal in a few days and didn’t need medication.
Julia Land huddled by the car door motionless, and James Thompson was speechless; he knew this would happen.
"Are you coming over, or should I come to you?"
"I choose neither."
James Thompson let out a cold huff and stopped calling her over, instead he went to her, opened the ointment, dipped his fingertip in it, and promptly pulled Julia Land’s hand towards him.
Applying the medicine.
Julia Land’s skin was naturally fair, so the scratch marks on her arm from nails looked even redder and more swollen.
The man’s expression was serious as he applied the medication, lacking his usual playful demeanor.
Julia Land thought of what Arabella Shaw had mentioned, how she was taken advantage of by strangers at the Starshine Hotel.
Now, she had the time to think about this issue.
As Julia Land watched James Thompson tenderly apply the medication, tears welled up in her eyes.
Arabella had said it was a beggar, but beggar or not, it was a stranger.
After James Thompson finished applying the medicine, he looked up to see Julia Land’s eyes reddened, and with the finger that hadn’t touched the ointment, he lightly touched the corner of her eye.
In a deep voice, he said, "Want to cry? Didn’t see you wanting to cry during the fight."
"I..."
Julia Land had just begun to explain that it wasn’t the sting of the wound that was making her cry.
She intended to tell James Thompson about what happened at the Starshine Hotel a year ago.
However, James Thompson’s cellphone just happened to ring at that moment, the ringtone interrupting what Julia Land was about to say.
James Thompson answered the call, glanced at Julia Land, listened to Jasper Winters’s report on the other end, and after Jasper Winters finished, he said, "Alright, I know now."
James Thompson hung up the phone and said to Julia Land, "The two men you wanted to catch have been caught. Do you want to see them now, or should we send them straight to the police station?"
Julia Land was instantly delighted, "Let’s see them first, they took photos and videos of Austin Langston."
After being questioned by Austin Langston, she had, in fact, felt very sad.
Initially, their acquaintance was based purely on mutual benefits.
But now, Julia Land couldn’t quite articulate her feelings; she just felt a sense of guilt.
*
On the way to see the two men involved in the act,
Julia Land discussed the matter about Austin Langston with James Thompson.
After hearing the entire story, James Thompson first stretched out his hand and pinched Julia Land’s face, "So you can compose too. I thought you could only screech off-key when singing."
He’s referring to off-key singing on a trip they took to Long State City.
After pinching her face, James Thompson instantly turned serious before Julia Land could get angry.
"Little Pear, she had seen you when you sold Austin Langston the rights to the song. Anyone clever should have guessed you were targeting Arabella Shaw."
"Since Austin Langston chose to accept, then she has to bear the consequences of her choice."
That might sound a bit heartless, but that’s what James Thompson believed.
"Human nature is just like that, seeking benefits and avoiding harm. If she doesn’t want to be involved with you anymore, she should stay away; and you shouldn’t feel guilty about this incident."
"Oh," Julia Land said dully, "why don’t you ask me why I’m targeting Arabella Shaw?"
If it were another man, he might assume that Julia Land was jealous that Arabella Shaw got Noah Quarter.
Old love, hard to forget.
James Thompson was sitting very close to Julia Land at first.
Upon hearing her question, he nonchalantly, with a show of restraint, moved to sit on the other side.
Julia Land looked at him, puzzled.
James Thompson cracked a smile, fell silent for a second, and then said, "The photo of Arabella Shaw with the hit-and-run driver was sent to that fool, Noah Quarter, by me."
Back then, Julia Land was pretending to have amnesia in an attempt to win back her ex-husband, which actually saddened James Thompson a bit.
James Thompson had been about to give up because he felt there was no need to persist in a love that wasn’t his.
So when his subordinates got their hands on the photo of Arabella Shaw with the hit-and-run driver, he sent it to Noah Quarter.
It was the last chance for everyone to choose.
As a result, Noah Quarter decided to send Julia Land away from Dunmore City after receiving that photo.
Thinking of this, James Thompson scoffed, "I should really thank Noah Quarter for his choice after receiving that photo."
So it turns out that the photo of Arabella Shaw with the hit-and-run driver was provided by James Thompson.
Julia Land, "...."
She would definitely not tell James Thompson that at the time she was pretending to have amnesia on purpose to get close to Noah Quarter, just to make Arabella Shaw uncomfortable.
If James Thompson knew about this, he would probably call her foolish too.
James Thompson gave Julia Land a glance, "Actually, I suspect Arabella Shaw was the mastermind behind that car accident."
"Little Pear."
"Yes?"
"Your tactics can be much harsher," James Thompson said with deep eyes, "There’s no need to follow the rules."
Julia Land looked toward James Thompson, paused, then said, "Should I find someone to run her over?"
