Chapter 104: Chapter 104 The Dead

James Thompson heard that Julia Land was going to meet Stella Langston.

"Take a bodyguard," James Thompson thought it over and still felt uneasy, "I’ll accompany you."

Julia Land was also worried that Stella Langston had set a trap for her.

So, she arranged to meet Stella Langston directly in the park.

A public place would prevent Stella Langston from plotting against her.

"Okay, thank you, Mr. Thompson, for accompanying me."

Stella Langston waited for Julia Land on the park bench, knowing Julia was wary of her.

But Julia would never guess that Stella had no plans to do anything to her in the park.

Stella Langston smirked with a light chuckle.

Today, she wore a vintage dress with white gloves, emanating elegance.

Stella Langston looked up and saw Julia Land approaching.

Julia had brought a man with her.

Her gaze fell on James Thompson’s face.

A very handsome man.

Stella Langston felt a twinge of jealousy toward Julia Land, "Sis, I’ll only tell you this secret, okay?"

Meaning, the man with Julia Land had to leave first.

James Thompson gave Stella Langston a nonchalant glance—an ice-cold glance was all it took for Stella to feel the chill.

Julia Land asked James Thompson to move a bit further away, where he could still see her, but not hear the conversation.

Before walking away, James Thompson handed a black bag he was carrying to Julia Land.

Stella Langston’s eyes flickered, "Sis, did you bring the cash?"

Stella Langston had asked Julia Land for fifty thousand in cash, with the rest to be transferred to the bank account.

"It’s here," Julia Land handed the black bag to Stella Langston, "Tell me the secret first, then the transfer."

Stella Langston smiled, "Of course, I’ll show you a photo."

She opened her purse, took out a photo from inside, and handed it to Julia Land.

"Sis, you really do attract older men; this photo was from Mr. Wang’s study."

Julia Land glanced at the photo.

An erotic photo.

Her expression instantly turned cold.

Stella Langston took back the photo with a light laugh, "Sis, don’t panic. It’s just an AI-synthesized deepfake, not real, but very similar."

She put the photo back in her purse.

Julia Land’s eyes cooled, "Is this the secret you wanted to tell me? Are you playing me?"

Stella Langston said with a smile, "Of course not. I still want the rest of the money; why would I deceive you?"

The Langston Family was now bankrupt and in debt.

Stella Langston genuinely needed the money.

"Sis, haven’t you ever doubted your own origins?"

"What do you mean?" Julia Land asked expressionlessly.

Who would doubt their heritage for no reason? Grace Land had treated her quite well before she was eight.

"You’re not our mother’s biological daughter. Mom found you abandoned on the roadside during Tomb Sweeping Day when she returned to her hometown."

"You should be grateful that my mother picked you up, otherwise who knows if you’d still be alive now."

Stella Langston spitefully said, "Julia Land, you really are biting the hand that fed you. If it weren’t for my mother, do you think you would have had the chance to marry into the Quarter Family? And to obtain so much property after the divorce."

"You’re such an ungrateful person! Mom was just in a rush and used a photo of you from the orphanage to threaten you into giving some money to save the Langston Family. But you? You heartlessly had her sent to jail."

Julia Land looked at Stella Langston, unsure if what Stella said was true or false.

Whether Grace Land was her biological mother could be checked with a DNA test.

Julia Land didn’t fully believe Stella Langston’s words.

Julia Land said indifferently, "If Mrs. Land had told me this, I might have thanked her for picking me up, but she didn’t mention it."

Stella Langston knew Julia Land would not readily believe everything she said.

"My mother worried that picking you up and not reporting it might lead to legal trouble, so she never mentioned it."

"It’s all because of your heartlessness that I had to marry an old man so young."

Stella Langston shot Julia Land a resentful glance, turned, and walked away with the bag of money.

Once she turned around, her eyes sparkled with excitement.

It was true that Julia Land wasn’t her mother’s biological daughter. If Julia believed the rest, then she got what she deserved.

After all, it had been over twenty years.

Julia Land would find nothing if she tried to investigate.

"Sophia, are you okay?"

Julia Land zoned out as she sat in the car.

James Thompson held her hand.

"Stella Langston said I’m not Grace Land’s biological daughter."

Julia Land turned to look at James Thompson with a somewhat vacant expression, repeating Stella’s claim to him.

It felt strange to suddenly be told your parents might be someone else after twenty or so years.

James Thompson said, "You can’t entirely trust what she says; I’ll get someone to obtain a hair sample from Grace Land to conduct a paternity test."

"Mm."

Julia Land’s mind was somewhat in turmoil.

James Thompson sat with her in silence.

"Jasper Winters, stop the car ahead."

James Thompson had Jasper Winters drive today in case of any unexpected situations.

Jasper Winters found a spot to pull over.

James Thompson asked Julia Land to wait in the car as he got out.

Through the window, Julia Land watched the tall man cross the street and enter the convenience store opposite them.

After a few minutes, James Thompson emerged from the convenience store, returned to the car, opened the door, and slid in.

"Sophia, have some ice cream. Whenever Sophia Hart felt down, she would love to buy this to cheer up."

He had bought a box of ice cream, gently explaining as he looked at Julia Land with tender eyes.

Startled by his words, Julia Land took the ice cream and then smiled slightly, "Mr. Thompson, thank you."

Right now, Jasper Winters really admired his boss’s emotional intelligence.

Quite high.

Tonight, rain poured down.

Officer Chen braved the downpour to inspect the murder scene.

The victim was found dead in an alley near the Sincere Heart Community during the midnight hours.

As dawn broke, the rain stopped.

Today, Julia Land and James Thompson planned to go furniture shopping. James Thompson was worried about her mood and wanted to cancel, but Julia Land refused.

Shopping was also a way to relax.

Julia Land got up in the morning and, before even having breakfast, received a call from Sophia Hart.

"Sister Land, you need to come back; an officer is looking for you."

Sophia Hart glanced at the serious-faced officer.

Julia Land puzzled, "Okay, I’m heading back now."

"Mr. Thompson, we can’t go shopping today; I need to go back to the Sincere Heart Community. An officer is looking for me."

She changed her clothes while telling James Thompson, who was busy with work.

James Thompson put down his work and also changed his clothes.

What did the officer want with Sophia?
