Chapter 89: 89: Unexpected Distrubances- Part 2
Since an opening had occurred, it would be foolish of Auriel not to grasp it.
Without hesitation, Auriel launched herself forward, channeling what divine power she could spare into her spear.
The glowing weapon hummed with energy as she aimed for the one weak spot she had found—the snake’s unprotected eye.
The spear struck true.
A deafening screech erupted from the creature as the divine energy seared through the corrupted flesh, sending violent ripples through its entire form.
The snake thrashed wildly, the dark energy making up its body beginning to unravel.
Auriel did not let up.
Using her other hand, she summoned a blast of divine energy and forced it directly into the wound, purifying the core of the dark energy from within.
The snake’s agonized cries echoed through the chamber as its body disintegrated into fragments of black mist before finally vanishing entirely.
Silence fell over the battlefield.
Auriel let out a deep breath, wiping a thin layer of sweat from her forehead. That fight had taken more out of her than she liked to admit.
She glanced around, expecting another wave of enemies, but nothing came. The space around her remained eerily quiet, the lingering traces of dark magic fading into nothingness.
She had won. But something still felt... wrong.
Her eyes narrowed as she scanned the area, looking for any remaining threats.
That creature had been powerful, far too powerful for something that was simply a manifestation of dark energy. Something—or someone—had to be controlling it.
Before she could dwell on the thought further, a strange sensation crawled up her spine. A presence—one far stronger than the snake—was watching her.
Auriel slowly turned around.
In the darkness, just beyond the fading mist of the slain creature, a figure stood.
Cloaked in shadows, their form was barely discernible, yet their presence was suffocating. The air around them rippled unnaturally, as if the very space rejected their existence.
For the first time in centuries, Auriel felt a chill of unease.
"You...Who are you? And how did you get here?"
She spoke, gripping her spear tightly.
The figure did not respond immediately. Instead, a slow, eerie chuckle escaped from the darkness.
"You are quite persistent, Goddess Auriel. But persistence alone will not save you from what is to come"
The voice was neither male nor female, distorted and echoing unnaturally.
Auriel took a step forward, her divine energy flaring in warning.
"If you are the one responsible for corrupting this place, then I will purge you along with it."
The figure tilted their head slightly, as if amused by her words.
Oh, but I am not the one who has done this. I am merely... an observer."
Auriel’s grip on her weapon tightened. An observer? That was not something she wanted to hear. Whoever this was, they were clearly involved in the corruption spreading throughout this world.
"If you truly were just an observer, you wouldn’t be standing before me now. You’re testing me, aren’t you?"
She said, her voice sharp.
The figure remained silent for a moment before chuckling again.
"Perhaps. But it matters little now. This was only a small glimpse of what is coming, Goddess. You are powerful, yes, but you are still bound by the limitations of your kind. The heavens will not protect you from what lies ahead."
Auriel’s eyes narrowed.
"Enough riddles. If you wish to fight, then fight. Otherwise, stay out of my way."
The figure’s form began to distort, flickering like a mirage.
"A fight? No, not yet. You are not ready. But when the time comes, you will understand the futility of your struggle."
With those final words, the shadowy entity dissolved into the surrounding darkness, leaving Auriel alone in the vast, empty chamber.
She did not lower her spear immediately, waiting to see if any further threats emerged. But after a few moments of silence, she finally allowed herself to relax—though only slightly.
’That was not an ordinary creature,’
She thought, her mind racing. Whatever she had just encountered was something far beyond a mere corrupted being. It was intelligent, and it had a purpose.
And, perhaps most concerning of all, it had implied that even the gods themselves were not beyond reach.
Auriel took a deep breath, then turned toward the exit. She needed to return to the temple. If this threat was as serious as it seemed, then she would need to prepare—not just herself, but the entire world—for what was to come.
Whatever dark force was brewing, she knew one thing for certain:
This was only the beginning.
Auriel barely had time to process what had happened before she felt solid ground beneath her feet again.
The suffocating presence of dark magic faded, replaced by the comforting hum of divine energy flowing steadily around her.
She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, her body still tense from the battle she had just fought.
Looking up, she met the golden eyes of the one who had saved her—Goddess Shanti, the celestial weaver of fate.
Shanti’s star-laden skin shimmered in the dim light, a tapestry of constellations constantly shifting across her form.
The goddess was calm, as always, but her sharp gaze studied Auriel with quiet concern.
"You’re lucky I was nearby. Had you been trapped any longer, you might have been lost entirely."
Shanti said, her voice smooth and measured.
Auriel straightened herself, brushing off the remnants of dark energy still clinging to her aura.
"I would have found a way out eventually."
She replied, though she knew it was only half true. She had been stuck, wandering in that collapsing space with no direction. If Shanti hadn’t reached out, she might have been swallowed by the void.
Shanti arched an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced by Auriel’s bravado, but chose not to press the matter. Instead, she turned her gaze toward the faint rippling of the rift behind them.
The unstable tear in space crackled with residual dark energy, slowly sealing itself now that Auriel had been pulled through.
