Chapter 1186: Chapter 1186: Stop Lying to Yourself_1
Someone knocked on the door.
Cherry ran over to open it.
The door was locked tightly, bolted with several locks, which Cherry unlocked one by one, then cracked open—only to find that it was chained shut.
A padlock hung from the chain.
Cherry thought for a moment, then turned and ran to a drawer, stood on tiptoes and searched for the keys inside.
From outside, the village officials joked, "Kid, there sure are a lot of locks on your door."
As Cherry searched for the keys, she replied, "Daddy told me to lock it, to keep the bad people out."
That made sense; when parents weren’t home, they always told their children to secure the door and not let strangers in.
While Cherry was looking for the keys, the village officials chatted idly with two police officers outside.
"How many more houses are left to check?"
"Almost done, there are two empty houses further back, all the older folks have gone, and the young ones are working in the city, haven’t come back for years, the houses are too run-down to live in."
"Let’s also take a look later, the higher-ups require us to visit each home."
"The city area has been pretty much checked, if there’s still no clue, I guess they will expand the search area..."
While they spoke, Cherry had found the key and opened the door.
One of the officers smiled and patted her head, "Little one, where are the adults in your family?"
Cherry shook her head, "Daddy doesn’t tell me, he says children shouldn’t worry about adult matters."
The group laughed together.
"We’re here on official business, come on, look at uncle’s documents," another officer crouched down, showing Cherry the documents, "We need to conduct an inspection, don’t worry, we won’t mess with your things, just going to look around, it’s our job, understand?"
Cherry frowned, half-understanding, and nodded, "Oh."
She returned to her cartoon mat and continued watching cartoons.
The two police officers wandered around upstairs and downstairs.
Without a search warrant, entering the house to inspect requires the homeowner’s permission, and they cannot conduct an overly detailed search, such as rummaging through drawers or opening cabinets, as that would be an infringement of rights.
The structural inspection of the house was over quickly; besides a little girl, there was no second person in the house.
The police came back to the living room and asked Cherry, "How many people usually live here at home?"
"Just me and Daddy," replied Cherry.
The two officers exchanged glances.
One of them asked Cherry, "Why are there two pillows on the bed? Who do you usually sleep with?"
"I sleep with Peter Rabbit," Cherry said as a matter of course.
"Peter Rabbit?"
"Mhm."
She stood up, walked into the room, picked up a plush rabbit toy almost her size from the floor, placed it on the bed, and covered it with a blanket.
"Here, this is Peter Rabbit."
The officer understood.
There was nothing suspicious about the house, clean and tidy, although the furniture seemed makeshift as if it was a temporary dwelling—but considering a single man with a child, the simplicity was understandable.
With no more questions, they left the place.
Before they went, they reminded Cherry to keep the access control secured and not to open the door for strangers.
Cherry agreed.
Those people gradually walked away, out of sight, leaving only a few messy tracks in the snow.
Cherry continued to watch from the windowsill.
After a long time, assured they wouldn’t come back, she turned and ran to the sofa, moved the cushion aside, and pulled up the metal movable panel—
"They’re gone!" Cherry shouted down below, her voice joyful and proudly seeking praise.
The first to come out was Purple Summers.
Purple looked upset.
Anyone would have had a foul mood after hearing what Nathaniel Summers said.
Now, seeing Cherry brimming with pride, Purple felt even worse.
Unable to contain her anger, she exclaimed, "You don’t understand what liking someone means at all! Your so-called liking is just wanting to assimilate the two of us, to turn us into ghosts like yourself to play with you! You’re going to get Nathaniel killed, do you think he will still like you then? Is that even possible? Stop deceiving yourself!"
