After lunch, Alexander Summers left the island for work.

The election campaign was now drawing to a close, and he, the candidate, had been barely engaged. It was only toward the end that he found time to deal with campaign tours, television interviews, and the like.

Alexander was pleased with the arrival of Zara Jameson and Jane McCain. It was perfect timing because his wife would have someone to keep her company while he was away from the island, giving him some peace of mind.

Once Alexander had left, the three girls sat cross-legged on the sofa, drinking tea and snacking.

Having witnessed Purple Summers’ appetite firsthand, Jane McCain was astounded. Now, seeing her eat again, she couldn’t help but ask, "Will you keep eating like this?"

"That won’t be the case," Purple shook her head and gestured to her belly, "Later on, when the belly gets bigger, the stomach will be squeezed, and I’ll feel full after eating just a little bit."

Jane McCain imagined the scene of the stomach being squeezed and her face crinkled with discomfort.

"Why on earth do you have to get pregnant..." She looked at Purple with revulsion, then at Zara, "Zara, have you really thought this through?"

Zara drank her milk tea quietly without speaking.

Purple asked with a smile, "Jane, didn’t you used to love children? You were always talking about having a mixed-race baby in high school."

"I do like children, but I don’t like being pregnant," Jane said.

It was related to her upbringing; Jane just couldn’t accept the idea of her figure being altered.

"Without pregnancy, how would you have a child?" Purple asked her.

Jane actually pondered this seriously, "...Find a surrogate?"

"Isn’t surrogacy illegal?"

"I could go to Russia where it’s legal," Jane said with growing enthusiasm, her smile broadening, "There are also plenty of handsome men in Russia."

That seemed rather off-topic.

"You’ve got lovely ideas, but your future husband might not agree," Purple turned to look at Zara, "Zara, what are your plans?"

Zara pursed her lips and exhaled softly, "I want to have the baby."

"Why!" Jane blurted out, "Don’t you think the timing is extremely bad?"

"I know the timing isn’t right." Zara’s fingers, clutching her tea cup, turned white from the pressure, as tense as her state of mind, "I... I’m aware that Ryan Wesley and I are too young, we might not be ready for parenthood, our education is incomplete, we’re not married, not financially independent, nothing is prepared..."

Zara’s situation was quite different from Purple’s.

In the Judicial Training Institute where Purple studied, most students enrolled after graduating from college, so the average age was higher, and there were quite a few who were married with children.

Whereas at the university Zara attended, a standard four-year institution, having a child this early would make her an anomaly at the school, and she would likely struggle to complete her courses, making a leave of absence almost inevitable.

Jane and Purple were both baffled and couldn’t understand why Zara was insisting on having the child now.

"I looked up the abortion process..." Zara murmured, her eyes fixated on the marble floor’s ink-like patterns, speaking slowly, "...it’s too cruel, that’s a life, I... I just can’t do it..."

"How can you think like that? Right now, it’s just a fertilized egg, an embryo, it doesn’t even have a heart or a brain developed yet!" Jane pressed her lips together, then let out a defeated sigh, "Alright, I’ve never been pregnant, I don’t know what pregnant women think. I just feel like, there’s really no need to take this so seriously."

Zara was silent for a while before lifting her gaze to Purple, "Do you think so too?"

Purple pursed her lips and asked her, "Zara, does Ryan Wesley also want to have the baby?"

Zara shook her head gently, "I haven’t told him."

Purple felt helpless, "This child belongs to both of you, you should tell him and discuss it properly."
