Chapter 41: Chapter 41 Nancheng, You Softened (4)
Originally, she hadn’t rested well these past few days, and coupled with the anxiety of the last two days, she was especially exhausted. Yet, she couldn’t sleep after tossing and turning in bed for hours, her mind full of breaking up with Jiang Jinghao.
Three days, she only had three days.
Qiao Mo sat on her bed with the TV on all night, lost in thought all night long.
Until the next morning, when the dawn light stained the sky, the first ray of sunshine pierced through the light mist and fell onto her face through the window, did her gaze finally gain some focus.
She raised her hand to block the not-so-dazzling sunlight and turned to look out the window.
The sun shattered the dark blue sky, a fiery cloud rolled by, as if Lord Lao Zi of the Great Monad had overturned his alchemy furnace, or as if the artist’s palette had been smudged, thousands of golden threads scattered through the branches, showering a ground of broken gold.
Qiao Mo got up and walked to the window, gazing at the morning sun, hesitating no longer.
She knew that whatever entangled Xu Zouchu and Fu Nancheng was not her will, but more than anyone, she understood that by now, many things were beyond her choice.
Standing by the window, she fiddled with her phone, yet every word she typed felt so difficult.
’Jing Hao, there’s something I don’t know if I should tell you, Fu Nancheng and I...’
’Jing Hao, we’re not suitable for each other; let’s end it here.’
...
In the quiet morning, the room only echoed with the sound of fingers tapping on the keyboard, yet each tap was a stab to her heart.
Qiao Mo deleted and revised twice; her eyes were already red.
She had so many things she wanted to say to him, so many grievances she wanted to tell him...
She had many instructions, much reluctance, and many hopes left unspoken.
But it seemed as if it was all too late to say it all.
With shimmering tears blurring her vision, her fingers lightly moved, yet it was the simplest sentence, ’Jing Hao, let’s break up.’
The message was sent quickly, and after sending it, Qiao Mo pressed the power button.
Until the phone screen turned completely black, a crystalline tear rolled down her cheek and fell onto the screen, reflecting the light and shadow of the morning sun.
She sniffed, drew the curtains tightly, and the room returned to extreme darkness.
She turned and tossed her phone onto the table, then curled herself up in the blanket.
Perhaps it was a sleepless night; she gradually fell asleep after an unknown period.
Yet even so, her sleep was restless, with Jiang Jinghao and Fu Nancheng’s faces continuously appearing alternately in her dreams.
She dreamed of Jiang Jinghao riding a bicycle with her through the campus, dressed in a clean white shirt, full of the scent of grass and sunshine.
She dreamed of him sitting on the lawn, lightly strumming a guitar, with her image always reflected in his eyes when he looked up.
She dreamed of rainy winter nights where he held an umbrella to pick her up, half his shoulder drenched yet insisting on sharing the umbrella with her.
The corners they ran past, the movies they watched, the songs they hummed together, the vows they made, the future they hoped for.
Those past moments, those memories, surged into her dreams time and again, playing out like movie scenes.
But suddenly, everything changed.
The sunlight withdrew, the breeze ceased, there was no fragrance of grass, and no longer his clean smile.
All of it was getting farther and farther away from her.
She found herself trapped in a pair of cold, eerie eyes, like a cold, vast ocean; she couldn’t break free, nor could she leave. She struggled, screamed, but was eventually engulfed, bit by bit, by the wild wind and huge waves.
