Chapter 80: Zombies Don’t Actually Exist
"Zombie tide?" I asked, raising my eyebrow. Yes, I knew I was technically talking to myself, but at this point in time, what was I going to do about it? Might as well enjoy the company while I had it.
"Yeah, that is what some of the people in City D are calling it. They say that the zombies are practically crawling over each other like waves trying to be the first ones to the city," answered Bai Long Qiang.
"You do know that zombies don’t actually exist, right? That they are nothing more than a fictional species created by a Country M filmmaker by the name of George A. Romero. And even then, not once did he call them zombies," I countered, heading into the living room and sitting beside Cheng Bo Jing.
Maybe I was going crazy if I was thinking that zombies now existed.
"And just what would you call a creature that you can’t kill, who will just regenerate like a character from a video game, and eats people?" snapped Bai Long Qiang as he threw himself into one of the oversized chairs. Drama queen.
"Clowns," I deadpanned, looking him straight in the eyes.
"You really have to get over that," he sighed.
"You were the one that dressed up as a clown and told me you ate Bai Long Qiang and you were coming for me next," I reminded him. Sure, I was like seven at the time and should have known better, but clowns were scary as fuck as it was.
"I thought you would find it funny. You might have been a kid, but you always acted older than your age. I swear, by the time you were 10, it was like you were in your thirties."
I stuck my tongue out at him. Not the most mature action I would admit, but the Bai Long Qiang in my head was just as annoying as the one in real life.
"I don’t think that is what we should be concentrating on right now," spoke up Ye Yao Zu as he, too, came into the living room and sat down. One by one, each one of the guys took a seat around me.
Even if I was by myself, I was never alone.
Bai Long Qiang snorted at Ye Yao Zu. "And just what do you think we should be concentrating on?"
"Wang Tian Mu’s safety. These things might not die, but you can’t argue that they aren’t smarter than any zombie you’ve ever heard of before," replied Ye Yao Zu, shooting the fearless leader a look.
"They are smart?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. I tried to think about the ones that I had come across in the hospital, but I couldn’t see any evidence of intelligence.
"We came across them in the woods around our training exercise," said Fan Teng Fei. There was a far-off look in his eyes, and I could see more than a bit of fear. "It was like nothing we had encountered before. They set traps and ambushes. They went into the trees to take us out."
He paused as if something had just come to mind.
"It was like they knew all of our tactics and training. Like they were fighting a guerrilla war that we knew nothing about." He shuddered as he got lost in his head.
I guess imaginary people could suffer from PTSD.
"I’m sorry," I said softly, and I really was. I would not admit that zombies were now a real thing, but clearly, whatever these creatures were, humans were not prepared for them.
Fan Teng Fei simply shrugged his shoulders like it wasn’t that big of a deal, but I knew how bad it was if it could affect the Shaolin monk like that.
"Okay," I sighed, trying to get the conversation back on track. "So there are thousands of these... zombies... coming, and they are going to hit City D in half a day."
Cheng Bo Jing nodded his head. "You need to make sure that nothing can get in here and hunker down. Do not come out until we tell you that you are safe."
"I feel like I should offer to go above ground and try to save as many people as I can," I muttered. I mean, wasn’t that what a ’normal’ person would worry about? How many people they could save?
"That seems like the stupidest thing you could possibly do," snapped Bai Long Qiang.
"I am a doctor. I am supposed to care about the lives of others before my own," I shrugged. I could go through the motions until the ghosts in the room convinced me to stay put.
I might be a doctor, but only an idiot would want to sacrifice their life for a stranger.
Zeng Xian Liang shot me a look. It looked like he understood exactly what was going on in my head, and he wasn’t impressed.
Once again, I shrugged my shoulders.
"Do you need more supplies? There is not a lot of time, but if you leave now, you might be able to grab more of something," suggested Bai Long Qiang, but I shook my head.
"I have more than enough," I assured him. I would stay in the bunker until the tide left the area, and then I would go out and try to find the guys. "You know, next time we both decide to get implanted with a GPS, we should take EMPs into consideration. That was a lot of work for something to stop working just when we needed it."
"Your phone is toast anyway; it’s not like you could use the app to track me down."
"I have a working cell with the app on it, and I am pretty sure that the satellites are still working," I countered.
"Fuck," hissed Cheng Bo Jing, coming to his feet. "The satellites."
I raised an eyebrow, not even pretending to understand what was going on.
"Do you think that is a possibility?" asked Fan Teng Fei, his eyes going wide.
"Can someone explain to the rest of the class what you are going on about?" I sneered.
"Can this place withstand a nuclear bomb?"
