Chapter 63: Let’s Hope You’re Right
Si Dong looked at the man walking beside him silently down the hall. The members of their team had been called in by Cheng Bo Jing in order to discuss something, but no one had any idea what was going on.
Well, that wasn’t strictly accurate. Si Dong had seen him at the hospital, so whatever had put a bee in his bonnet was probably related to her. And that meant that he was going to have to do something to fix whatever had upset her.
Fan Teng Fei, a.k.a ATM for his ability to get the team anything and everything they needed, shrugged his shoulders at Si Dong’s look. "I have no idea what is going on," he muttered as he opened the door to Cheng Bo Jing’s office.
Inside, Bai Long Qiang and Ye Yao Zu were already sitting down in the two visitor’s seats while Cheng Bo Jing sat behind his desk.
"You’re here," he said, looking up from whatever was in the file in front of him. "Shut the door so we can get started."
"A conference room would be more comfortable," joked Si Dong as he leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. Fan Teng Fei shut the door and went to stand beside him.
"I can make a call. I am sure that there are some available," offered Fan Teng Fei as he took out his cell phone.
"No need. And while you have that out, everyone needs to completely turn off their cellphones and give them to me," continued Cheng Bo Jing as he pulled out a metal box from one of the drawers in his desk.
He then proceeded to take out his phone, powered it down, and then placed it in the box.
ATM and Si Dong shared a look before copying his actions and tossed their phones to Cheng Bo Jing.
"I thought you called the entire team; why is it just the five of us here?" asked Bai Long Qiang as he flipped his phone in his hand. It had yet to be turned off.
"Is there a problem with who I have invited into my office?" replied Cheng Bo Jing with a smile that would make any other man scared. Unfortunately, it was directed to Bai Long Qiang.
"Of course not. I just find it funny that everything you do seems to have some connection with the others who are here. But I am not part of your little group. Honestly, you have hurt my feelings. We are all a team. All sixteen of us." Bai Long Qiang leaned forward as he spoke to Cheng Bo Jing. The man rubbed him the wrong way ever since he had learned that Cheng Bo Jing and Wang Tian Mu were close.
"If that is how you feel, then by all means, you are more than welcome to leave," smiled Cheng Bo Jing, not flinching in the slightest. He knew how much the other man hated him, and if the situation was reversed, he might feel the same way.
But this conversation had nothing to do with the dynamics of their team. In fact...
"Actually, I changed my mind. You are dismissed," he smiled at Bai Long Qiang, pulling rank. He would only share his information with those he could trust with Wang Tian Mu’s safety, people that wouldn’t share it with the rest of the military.
And Bai Long Qiang might not be that guy.
"I’ll stay. It is still my team, after all," answered Bai Long Qiang as he leaned back in his chair and turned off his phone.
Seeing that, Ye Yao Zu quickly followed suit, and both men handed their phones to Cheng Bo Jing. He placed them in the metal box and locked it before putting it back in his desk. And then locked that drawer, too.
"My office is clean. I make sure of that every time I come back into it. I can’t guarantee that the conference rooms are the same. You’ll have to deal with the discomfort," said Cheng Bo Jing after a second, finally answering Si Dong’s question.
The other man nodded.
"I received a call from one of my informants," started Cheng Bo Jing as he looked around at the four men in front of him. He hoped that he was doing the right thing, but only time would tell.
Si Dong straightened and took a step forward. He knew who Cheng Bo Jing was talking about.
"My informant let me know that there was something wrong with the vaccines that we received when we came back from that mission a few weeks ago," he continued.
"Not possible; your informant is wrong," snapped Bai Long Qiang.
"No, he really isn’t. He even showed me the test results," smirked Cheng Bo Jing. He would not give anyone even a hint of information on who his ’informant’ was just in case there was a man here he couldn’t trust.
"What did he say?" asked ATM, copying his friend’s pose. If there was something wrong with the vaccine....
"He said that instead of getting the vaccine, we were injected with other DNA. He could only identify the shark DNA because it was something that he had seen before, but there were another two samples that he had no idea what they could be."
"He is lying through his teeth. Why would the military inject us with something and not tell us about it?" asked Bai Long Qiang. He appeared relaxed, but everyone in the room could read him like a book. The man was agitated. "Besides, there is no way he could get his hands on a sample from the vaccine."
"The tests," said Ye Yao Zu, speaking for the first time since he had entered the room.
Cheng Bo Jing just nodded his head.
"So what do you need us to do?" asked SI Dong, his signature smile no longer on his face.
"I need to find out who else got these vaccines."
"And your source?" added ATM. "Is your source safe?"
"I don’t know," sighed Cheng Bo Jing as he leaned back in his chair. "For now, yes. But if we are caught, my source might be too."
"I’m gone," said Ye Yao Zu, standing up so fast he almost knocked his chair over. He turned around and left the room, not caring about his cell phone or anything else. He had left his post because of this meeting, but if something happened to her while he was gone, they would all lose their minds.
"You are all overreacting. The military wouldn’t do anything like that to us. We are too valuable," said Bai Long Qiang as he shook his head.
"Let’s hope you’re right. For everyone’s sake," muttered Cheng Bo Jing, pulling out the metal box and giving everyone back their cell phones. "Let’s hope you’re right."
