Chapter 348: Death By Orangutan
Chapter 348: Death By Orangutan
Ren kept running, Thorn and Lilith sticking close behind him.
The ground thudded under their feet as they sprinted through the dense jungle, branches snapping and vines whipping across their faces.
They couldn’t afford to stop moving. Not now when they’d verified that it was in fact, unsafe.
Above them, the trees shook.
Loud hoots echoed through the thick canopy, sounding deep, guttural, and angry. The sound built in volume, overlapping, echoing from every direction like the pounding of war drums as the monsters got closer and closer.
They were everywhere. Their shapes swung through the trees.
Orange fur, long limbs, glowing yellow eyes. The jungle’s guardians had revealed themselves.
"Orangutans?" Thorn gasped as one swung from branch to branch in the distance before them. "Since when are monkeys allowed to have murder in their eyes?!"
"These aren’t monkeys." Ren muttered grimly under his breath. "They’re monsters. Nothing more, nothing less."
The orangutans snarled, furious. Their thick orange fur bristled as they swung with terrifying agility between the branches, some so high up they vanished in the darkness above, with others close enough to snatch hats.
And then came the rocks.
A deep hoot rang out above them, and from the shadows, a massive stone soared through the trees.
It was roughly the same size as an adult head, and was flying faster than an arrow.
"Down!" Ren shouted.
The stone whizzed past his ear with a bone rattling snap, slamming into a tree trunk and shattering it into splinters. The impact would have caved his head in if he hadn’t moved, and he wanted no repeat of the arrow incident.
Who knows what the Divine Gift had programmed the second ring guardian to be able to do along with their damage.
"Okay!" Thorn yelled. "Now I’m angry!"
Another rock came flying. This time, Ren raised his hand before him. "Push!"
A burst of force exploded outward, deflecting the rock in mid-air. It spun away harmlessly, crashing into a thicket of vines.
The sound of the hoots exploded in intensity, and more rocks zoomed towards them.
The orangutans seemed to be angered by the fact that they were unable to hit them, keeping up with an almost unending stream of rocks.
Each swing was followed by another stone whizzing through the air like a cannonball.
Ren kept pushing, again and again, his resonance forming brief barriers of force to catch or deflect the volleys.
"We can’t stop." Lilith said, leaning away from a stone that shattered the tree beside her. "They’re getting closer."
And they were. The orangutans had stopped throwing from afar. They were now swinging parallel to them, lowering themselves closer and closer, hooting louder and faster as their fury grew.
One landed in a tree beside them and let out a piercing shriek.
Then it leapt.
"Ren!" Thorn shouted.
Ren turned and fired a Push, catching the beast in mid-air and blasting it backward with a sharp crack. It vanished into the foliage with a heavy crash.
But it was already too late.
Another orangutan had slipped through the distraction and landed behind them.
It crashed into Thorn like a boulder, slamming him into the ground.
"Thorn!" Lilith screamed, skidding to a halt.
Ren stopped and spun around, eyes widening as he saw Thorn pinned under the massive weight of the beast.
The orangutan roared, its long, muscular arms pinning Thorn’s shoulders as its jaws snapped inches from his face.
"Get off me, you hairy bastard!" Thorn grunted, struggling under the weight.
His bone arm lashed upward, trying to push the creature off, but the thing was stronger than it looked, and much heavier too.
Ren moved.
He shot forward like a blur, the ground cracking beneath his feet as he surged toward the beast pinning Thorn down.
Its red eyes locked on him just as he raised a hand.
"Push."
The resonance detonated from his palm, not as a burst but a concentrated lance of force. It slammed into the orangutan’s chest like a battering ram.
The creature’s ribs caved in with a sickening crunch, and it was flung backward in a boneless heap, crashing into a tree with enough force to snap it in two. The tree toppled with a groan, vines and branches raining down.
Ren skidded to a stop beside Thorn. "Up."
Thorn groaned, blood running down his brow, but Ren hauled him to his feet. "Thanks."
"No time. Move!"
But the other orangutans had already closed in.
Dozens of them dropped from the trees, snarling, shrieking, their massive forms crashing to the ground in a thunder of limbs and rage.
The closest one charged with a wide swing of its arm, claws extended like daggers. Ren ducked, driving a Push empowered punch into its gut. The impact caved in its abdomen and sent it flying through a cluster of trees.
Another leapt for Lilith.
Her blade flashed through the air, embedding into the beast’s skull. She tore it free with a spin, ducked under a third, and kicked it square in the kneecap. The joint snapped, and it howled before she silenced it with a second blade to the throat.
Ren turned to shield Thorn as another orangutan lunged. He Pushed it back, then whipped vines from the earth, dragging two more into the ground.
But more just kept coming, and before long, it became a brawl.
Blood, sweat and shrieks filled the air. Thorn was roaring, swinging his bone arm like a hammer, smashing skulls and ribs with every blow.
Ren was a blur of speed, Pushing, dodging, tearing through the orangutans with the fury of a god. His fists shattered bones, and his vines strangled some of the beasts before they could touch him.
Lilith danced between them, her knives whistling. She didn’t even seem to miss as she danced around them, each of her throws finding a target.
But they were surrounded.
"Back to back!" Ren barked.
They pressed together, shoulders touching, hands raised.
The orangutans circled.
One by one, they charged.
Ren shattered a skull with a downward slam. Thorn grabbed an attacker in mid-air and hurled it into another. Lilith slid under a leaping beast, her knife flashing upward to gut it midair.
More came, and more fell.
One lashed its claws across Ren’s chest, tearing his cloak and slicing skin. He Pushed it so hard its body exploded into bark and pulp against a tree.
Blood splashed the earth. Bodies piled up.
The jungle was filled with the sound of angry hoots, but now they were fewer... and further.
The waves of beasts kept charging, and meeting death.
Before long, the action dwindled. One orangutan took a Push enhanced punch from Ren and landed in a heap, dead, beside its fallen kin.
And then, it was quiet.
Heavy breathing filled the clearing. The bodies of the dead jungle guardians lay scattered around them.
The rest of the orangutans had long since disappeared back into the trees, hooting angrily but not daring to come closer.
Ren let out a breath, blood dripping down his knuckles.
Thorn wiped his face with his sleeve. "That... was something."
Lilith didn’t speak. She stood quietly, eyes scanning the trees above them.
Ren turned to them both, voice low. "They’ll regroup. That wasn’t all of them. Not even close. We need to keep moving."
And so, they ran deeper into the jungle, leaving the bodies behind.
And as they ran, thousands of eyes followed them, hatred burning within them.
