Chapter 420: Chapter 419: Five five... Woo woo... It’s so hard!
Pandora looked at Richard and gave him a "See, I wasn’t wrong" expression.
Richard couldn’t help but shake his head, exhaling as he said, "If that’s the case... alright then, I’ll take care of this knocking sound."
"How are you going to do that?"
"Just sit here and watch, and besides... remember the Five-character table well in your mind. Remember, thirty-five fifty-five, start repeating it twenty times from now."
"Okay." Pandora responded, her eyes rolling upward as she stared at the ceiling, seemingly focused on remembering, while quietly muttering to herself.
"Thirty-five fifty-five, thirty-five fifty-five, thirty-five fifty-five..."
Richard nodded in satisfaction and turned his head towards the door.
He already had some guesses about the knocking sound, which was most likely the revenge from the Divination Woman. After all, before they had gone upstairs, the Divination Woman had frantically said, "Starting tonight, calamity will strike."
A ghostly knock-on-door scare tactic?
Richard smiled to himself, recalling a similar situation he had encountered when he once rented a house from Alex in White Stone City.
Back then, the house was very nice, but it hadn’t found a long-term tenant under Alex’s hands. That was because every night, someone would knock on the courtyard door, but when they opened it, no one could be found, as if ghosts were haunting.
It turned out that someone had smeared blood on the door, attracting bats to hit it and create a haunted phenomenon.
What about this time?
Smearing blood was definitely impossible.
After all, there wasn’t enough time, so what could it be?
Richard pondered for a moment and then chose the simplest method— to take a look and see clearly.
The next moment, his lips parted, and the free-flowing energy elements inside him surged as the spell activated.
Eye of Gaze!
Richard’s eyes underwent a change, his pupils constricted, and his spiritual power came into play. Gradually, in Richard’s view, the entire door and wall began to blur bit by bit, then turn transparent, and eventually nearly disappear, allowing him to clearly see the situation outside the house in the hallway.
Then Richard noticed a tiny black shadow, smaller than a cat, silently slipping down from a hole in the roof, quickly moving along the base of the wall, and then arriving in front of the door. In the next moment, it lifted its head and rhythmically started banging on the door, making a "bang bang bang" sound similar to knocking.
After doing all this, the black shadow didn’t hesitate to turn around and leave, moving extremely fast, almost disappearing back into the roof hole in the blink of an eye.
At this point, if someone were to open the door to check, even if they squinted their eyes to the largest, they wouldn’t be able to see any problem.
So that was it.
Richard understood.
Then patiently waited.
As expected, in a little while, he saw the black shadow slip down from the roof hole again, arriving in front of the door prepared to repeat the trick.
But this time, it was clearly going to fail.
Before the black shadow could act, Richard waved his hand, releasing the spell, and the door directly opened.
The black shadow outside the door was startled, and the next moment hurriedly tried to escape, but it was already too late.
Richard somehow had a large chunk of ice in his hand. At this moment, numerous ice slices peeled off the ice cube and flew towards the Black Shadow like bullets. However, they missed the Black Shadow’s body and instead fell around it. The ice then continuously blasted out cold air, rapidly lowering the temperature and solidly freezing the Black Shadow into a large lump.
Seeing the Black Shadow subdued, Richard blinked his eyes, his pupils returned to normal, and he voluntarily terminated the effect of the Eye of Gaze, as it consumed a lot of energy.
"Tap tap tap," Richard walked towards the door. Once outside, he picked up the frozen lump of the Black Shadow and turned back to the room.
Arriving at the desk, Richard placed the frozen Black Shadow on the tabletop and controlled the spell to slowly melt the ice on the surface of the Black Shadow’s body, thawing it.
Before long, the ice melted, and the true form of the Black Shadow was fully exposed - it was a fat rat. This rat, unlike ordinary rats, had claws that seemed mutated, presenting a metallic texture. If it attacked ordinary people, it’s hard to say it wouldn’t cause serious wounds. However, to consider it a Demonized Creature would be an overestimation; at most, it was a Half-demonized Creature.
"This is rather interesting." Richard looked at the rat with slightly squinted eyes, then noticed that, once thawed on the desk, the rat gradually began to move.
In the next moment, the rat flipped over, struggling to escape, but Richard was a step ahead and grabbed its tail, lifting it into the air.
The rat panicked, squeaking incessantly and attempting to attack with its claws.
Richard completely ignored it and earnestly observed this rat, sent by the Divination Woman as a decoy "Calamity" "pet."
After watching for a while, Richard made up his mind, muttering to himself, "Speaking of which, the biological laboratory in Eden has been established, but there’s no live subjects stored for experimentation. So, let’s make this rat the first live subject. We can perform tests and collect data on it. Yes, that’s settled."
Saying this, Richard took out a briefcase from the Space Iron Ring and placed the rat inside.
After handling the matter, Richard put away the briefcase and began preparing to address Pandora’s Multiplication Table issue - which was the main affair. As for the fierce curses and revenge spoken of by the Divination Woman, he directly ignored them. After all, considering the minor annoyance of sending a rat, even if there were any follow-up measures from her side, they could be easily dealt with.
Thinking this, Richard looked towards Pandora, and Pandora was also looking his way.
Richard asked, "The Five-character table, how well do you remember it?"
"Uh, pretty well," Pandora replied.
"Then recite it for me. Don’t tell me you haven’t memorized three times five yet."
"I’ve memorized it, memorized it," Pandora quickly said, and then a bit nervously repeated "three times five is fifteen" several times to reinforce her memory.
Richard shook his head lightly and said, "Go ahead then."
Pandora immediately began reciting; "One times five is five, two times five is ten, three times five..."
"Three times five?" Richard asked.
"Three times five - fifteen!" Pandora answered loudly after a long thought, with a kind of triumphant demeanor.
Without expression, Richard said, "What about next, four times five?"
"Four times five - twenty!" Pandora continued loudly, becoming very confident.
"Not bad," Richard said, then asked, "The last one, five times five?"
"Five times five..." Pandora began confidently, preparing to seal the victory, then suddenly fell silent. During the silence, Pandora’s proud expression froze on her face, her raised little head slowly lowered as she began murmuring, "Five times five, five times five, hmm hmm, hmm hmm..."
Her newly built strong confidence crumbled again under the destruction of the Multiplication Table.
...
That night, the light in Richard’s room was on for a long time, with faint voices continuously emanating.
"Five times five, five times five... I was wrong, I shouldn’t have said three times five was hard, five times five is truly hard. Five times five, five times five, hmm hmm hmm hmm... Five times five is too hard!"
