Chapter 307: Chapter 306: You Gnaw the Hard Bones, I Squeeze the Soft Persimmons Chapter 307: Chapter 306: You Gnaw the Hard Bones, I Squeeze the Soft Persimmons Richard glanced at Eva’s corpse and shook his head slightly, with a trace of disdain.
From a distance, Mu Konni shouted angrily at Suo Men, “Suo Men, what are you doing! Have you forgotten what I told you earlier? We were supposed to exchange this wretched woman’s corpse for points. How could you damage her body like this? If it’s in this condition, the organization won’t accept it, and even if they do, the points will be very low.”
“What can be done?” Suo Men glanced at Mu Konni and said, “Her strength was not weak; ordinary methods couldn’t kill her. Using a powerful method would inevitably damage part of her body. This is the least damaging way I could manage. If you’re not satisfied, then you should have done it yourself. Your Spiritual Magic is the most suitable for this task.”
Mu Konni shrugged. “But I’m not feeling well, I’m in no condition to do it.”
“Then don’t talk nonsense,” Suo Men said coldly.
Mu Konni’s gaze became somber. After a moment, she waved her hand with a damsel-like gesture and spoke in a magnetic male voice, “Fine, let’s not squabble over this. Let’s focus on the real task–go into the room and search to see if those books about Black Spirit King’s secrets that the woman collected are still here.”
“Alright.” Suo Men didn’t argue with Mu Konni and agreed, walking towards the room with Mu Konni following behind.
The two entered the room, and soon there was the sound of rummaging and then talking.
Before long, Suo Men and Mu Konni walked out of the house into the courtyard, both looking very troubled.
“What’s the situation? Why aren’t the books here?” Mu Konni voiced her frustration with furrowed brows.
“How should I know?” Suo Men responded, his brow furrowed just as deeply.
“It couldn’t have been hidden by this wretched woman…” Mu Konni pointed at Eva’s corpse in the courtyard, “could it have been hidden in some secret spot in the house that we failed to find?”
“That’s impossible,” Suo Men shook his head, dismissing this unrealistic possibility. “We searched thoroughly enough. If it were in the house, we would have definitely found it. Since we can’t find it now, it’s absolutely not here anymore.”
“Then…” Mu Konni’s eyes flashed, hinting at a thought. She quickly walked over to Eva’s corpse, squatted down, and searched the body very earnestly. Then, standing up, she faced Suo Men with a disappointed look, “It’s not on this wretched woman either. It seems it was placed elsewhere.”
“There’s another possibility,” Suo Men said, narrowing his eyes. “Before we made our move on the target, someone else did and took the books. Or perhaps the target herself handed the books to someone else.”
“This…” Mu Konni hesitated, then after a moment said, “In that case, does this mean our mission is a failure?”
“Not necessarily,” Suo Men squinted his eyes, “Our purpose in killing people, destroying books, is simply to stop the secrets of the Black Spirit King from being uncovered. Even though the books are gone, as long as we remain vigilant and continue to eliminate those who break the rules, it’s not a failure.”
“So, let’s leave this mission as it is for now. Let’s go,” Suo Men said as he walked towards the door, reminding Mu Konni, “Don’t forget, we have other tasks to do tonight; let’s not waste any more time here.”
“Uh, alright,” Mu Konni said, waving her hand over Eva’s body on the ground, causing it to disappear. She then quickly followed Suo Men out the door.
Richard had been hiding in a corner of the courtyard, watching Suo Men and Mu Konni leave. After a long while, when he heard no sound, he let out a breath of air. Just as he was about to step out from his hiding place and leave the yard, coincidentally, a series of footsteps sounded from outside the gate.
These footsteps!
Richard quickly ducked back into his hiding spot and cast the Concealing Breath Skill.
The footsteps outside the gate grew closer, and Richard, from his corner, saw three figures enter through the gate. All three were clad in heavy Black Robes, their faces entirely concealed beneath their hoods, unrecognizable unless one was close–extremely cautious and mysterious.
This raised suspicion in Richard.
At that moment, the three Black Robed men moved to the center of the courtyard, surveyed the messy, churned-up ground, and conversed quickly among themselves.
The first Black Robed Man spoke, “It seems a battle took place here.”
The second Black Robed Man spoke, “There was a fight, but no corpses remain, which means either one side won and disposed of the bodies or the fight was unresolved, and they left still battling.”
The third Black Robed Man chimed in, “Regardless of which scenario, it’s advantageous for us. According to intelligence, the woman who rented this courtyard possesses many books about secrets, several of which are rare editions that we have never encountered before.”
“So, now that the woman renting the courtyard is absent, we can quickly search the room and retrieve the books to bring back. Though I feel it will take centuries to unravel the secrets of that great being according to our organization’s progression, collecting more books related to secrets is always beneficial.”
The third Black Robed Man, who seemed to hold a slightly higher rank, paused briefly after speaking and then issued an order, “Alright, let’s move!”
“Yes.” The other two Black Robed Men responded and quickly entered the house to search.
The sounds of rummaging followed, interspersed with faint voices emanating from inside the house.
“Eh, it looks like someone has already searched through this house.”
“Hmm, indeed, the tables and chairs are all in disarray.”
“Damn it, could it be that the books we are looking for have already been taken? If that’s the case, it would be terrible. Search more carefully, don’t miss any corner.”
“Yes.”
“Clatter…”
The noise of searching resumed and continued for a long while before stopping. The three Black Robed Men exited the house, gathered in the yard, their tones gloomy.
“It seems we really are too late,” the first Black Robed Man said.
“Who could have gotten here first?” inquired the second Black Robed Man.
“Since it’s like this, there’s nothing we can do; let’s withdraw to avoid exposing our identities when the woman renting this place returns,” decided the third Black Robed Man.
“Right.” The other two Black Robed Men agreed.
The three Black Robed Men quickly walked towards the exit of the courtyard but had just stepped out when they retreated step by step back to the center of the yard.
Outside the courtyard, the “tap tap tap” of footsteps sounded as Suo Men and Mu Konni, who had left earlier, returned.
“Heh, I knew there would be people coming. Look, not too few either, one, two, three,” Mu Konni taunted, raising her eyebrows and speaking as she eyed the three Black Robed Men.
“Who are you?” the Black Robed Men asked cautiously, eyeing Suo Men and Mu Konni.
“Who are we? Heh, I am more curious to ask you guys that question,” Mu Konni responded, “Who are you, and what do you want here?”
“Why should we tell you?”
“Heh, very simple, because if you don’t tell me, you are going to die a very gruesome death,” Mu Konni said coldly, filled with threat.
“Really?” One of the Black Robed Men scoffed, showing disdain, “I don’t believe that. Let me see your strength first,” he said, stepping forward.
Suo Men was about to step forward to meet him but was stopped by a tug from Mu Konni.
“What?” Suo Men looked at Mu Konni, puzzled.
“Let me handle these three, you just rest,” Mu Konni spoke up.
“Huh? Didn’t you say you weren’t feeling well and were in poor condition?” Suo Men frowned, “Don’t push yourself.”
“I’m not pushing myself. The reason I felt bad earlier was because the bitch we faced was quite strong. But now, dealing with these three small fries, no problem. Besides, I can’t let you do all the mission work alone, otherwise how will I deal with your little report when the points are distributed?”
Suo Men: “…”
